She cried when I brought her home cause she had wanted a dog for a long time. This is a week old picture and I swear she's gotten bigger since then.

Pookah posted:I can attest to the ridiculous crying triggering quality of this - Beethoven is a funny one; he's moodier than Mozart but more emotional in a human way. Mozart is magical but less visceral. I've heard this piece before, and thought to myself "Pft, I'm way too much of a manly man to cry over some stupid song" Apparently I'm not, however. This is awesome.

Feelin' tough, but classically awesome? Have some Holst. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0bcRCCg01I This one piece is the source of inspiration for virtually every subsequent piece of music about war or warlike subjects. It is also amazing and everyone should listen to it. (listenin' right now, for the millionth time) Pookah has a new favorite as of 00:16 on Mar 20, 2013 |

One of my favorite things on the "Ode to Joy" piece is the guy in the audience who says "Wow" about 4:20 in. I love Holst's "Planets" -- at times I vacillate between "Mars" ("Bringer of War") and "Jupiter" ("Bringer of Jollity") as a favorite piece. Similarly used all the time to blow people's minds is "O Fortuna" from Orff's "Carmina Burana," which is one of my five or six favorite pieces of music ever. It has been used for all sorts of things (including a whacky beer ad) but fit possibly best in the film Excalibur (starting at 1:30) . People also like to make fun of the misheard lyrics.

The best use of Mars, Bringer of War is of course from The Venture Brothers.

On the topic of classical music I tend to have a weak spot for violin concertos. Erich Korngold was a composer who wrote mainly huge film scores. Among the music he wrote was "The Adventures of Robin Hood" from 1938 which actually won an Academy Award for best score. Later in life he wrote a violin concerto that was not received very well by the critics, one critic in particular said that it was more "..corn than gold". Erich died in the late 50's but his music lives on to this day and especially his violin concerto who is a very technical piece for violin, especially the third movement. I always play this for people who do not enjoy big orchestra music performed by people in fancy clothes. Once in a while they change their minds, it is a happy and uplifting piece. Here is the third movement played by Hilary Hahn, play it loud. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJEy8Vnm29c

For people who want more Ode to Joy, this is my favorite 9th Symphony-related video I've seen so far: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f42GIopSUZs I love it because I've played a lot of music and watched a lot of performances and never in my life have I seen a conductor so happy to be conducting a piece of music. Makes me happy every time I watch it. (The best part, or my favorite part anyway, is near the end, about 6:15. The man embodies "Ode to Joy.") I love that Spanish flash mob performance as well, I've seen it like twenty times and I still always cry. MK-Ultramarathon has a new favorite as of 23:54 on Mar 20, 2013 |

Sorry to make another post about my pets but look at my cats and tell me they aren't secretly getting stoned. Here's my sister's dog Ziggy with Cookie, hehe I got to help name him. This is her husband's dog Fuzzy,he is awful but his dog is amazing. And finally a picture of Cookie at Christmas! Though I wish Smokey would stop attacking Cookie. Also I just wanted to say my mom is the most inspiring person I've ever met. Suffered horrible childhood abuse because both her parents were mentally ill,my grandfather tried to kill himself at least 3 times with one of them including shooting himself in the chest twice, and utter poverty in 1960's southeast Ky,survived 21 years of horrible abuse at the hands of my father but she is so happy and positive. She also has most of her corpus callosum missing but she can fix almost anything and before she started losing her vision when I was growing up she would draw my sister and me stuff like a huge Super Mario mural or a picture of garfield popping out of a trick or treat bag. She is amazing and I'm so grateful that I have her in my life. Hmm I tried to edit this so the last picture wouldn't be table breaking huge but it shows up in the preview post as not being huge.
