I can't stress enough how much this just won't happen anymore. ATT (and all carriers) are cutting back entirely from flexing on bumping up upgrades or doing favors for current customers. It just won't happen*, and no they won't waive upgrade fees anymore either. And no there won't be an exception because you have been a customer for XX years.

My last upgrade was 11/3/12 and my upgrade eligibility is 6/4/14 so 19 months. The other line on my account was upgraded 6/15/12and will be upgrade eligible 1/16/14, again 19 months.

Yeah, pretty much all ATT limes get upgrades 5 months before the end of the contract date currently, unless you don't pay your bill on time (a favorite of mine is when people are out of contract and the system says they aren't eligible for an upgrade due to payment history).

ATT can always follow Verizon's lead, so who knows if/when.

Probably a really common question but I didn't see it in the last couple pages.

My HTC One comes in today. I got it under my wife's number on our family plan, but it's for me. We both have iPhone 4 phones right now - m with Unlimited, her with 2GB Data.

When the HTC One comes in the mail, can I just stick my microSIM in it? If I understand correctly an iPhone Unlimited Dataplan won't work on it and I'll have to go into the store to get things sorted out. Will they give me a hard time?

They won't unless you get a dick, and yeah it doesn't hurt to bring it in, get a new SIM and ensure it is working correctly. I think they come with the SIM though, so if so you can also just call care as well. And yes you will keep the same plan.

Re: train delay. The good news is that isn't the train containing your phone. That is not an express. What you are seeing is a delay because that is blocking the BN line that the mail trains run on. They will reroute your train and it shouldn't be more than a 24 hour delay. The email I got from the BN (I have customer freight stuck behind it as well) is they are reporting an 8-12 hour delay.

Sweet. Thanks for the info.

I just got done trying to talk to someone at the ATT store about it (before reading this thread again), and the person actually snapped at me even though I was just asking for advice. Wow.

Essentially: "Well it's your problem now. File a claim with UPS. Or file an insurance claim, and get a new phone by paying the $200 deductible. Nothing we can or will do."

Seriously? The company has actually cut costs to the point where it does not insure shipments containing $600-$800 pieces of hardware? My God. Or... did I just run into a rep that is a total rear end in a top hat?

Unfortunately they are correct. If UPS says that it was damaged, you have to take it up with UPS. I doubt it was lost in that derailment (Some Zero's post) so you just have to wait a bit longer. I have a good feeling though AT&T purchased shipping insurance as well.

Another thing...

Anyone know (or know how to find out) if ATT is allowed to tax the full retail, unsubsidized price of a phone in the state of Nevada? I know this can be done in California, but I thought this was restricted in NV.

Because it looks like I got taxed $42 on a $200 purchase... If Nevada allows that, then that's just the way it is, but if they do not then this loving corporate store isn't exactly following state tax law.

It looks like Nevada requires them to charge tax on whatever they paid the supplier for it if it's subsidized:

quote:

If a retailer sells the phone or equipment as part of a bundle with a service contract, then the retailer will charge sales tax on the cost of the phone to the retailer not the full retail price.

Example: a retailer may pay its supplier $200.00 for a cellular phone, however in order to enhance sales, the retailer offers a year’s worth of service for $99.00 a month, plus a free cellular phone to the customer. The sales tax is computed on the amount the retailer paid for the phone, $200.00

This is also the case in Rhode Island. IIRC, you have to pay taxes on the unsubsidized price of the phone in RI.

Is there some way to audit data usage, or at least see when and where it's being used? I'm apparently approaching 5 GB used for the month... but I'm on wifi and home, and on campus, and at work. My usage hasn't changed much in the last few months, but suddenly a lot of data is going somewhere. The iPhone's usage meter isn't super useful, in this case.

Wife and I currently have Gs3's were about a year into our contract, We are considering picking up HTC one's or possibly Gs4. We thought about adding 2 extra lines in the next month or so and that should allow us to upgrade each year right? Is there a better way to go if we don't want to pay full price for the phones? We have unlimited data and a really nice corp discount so we have no intentions of going to another service. If we add 2 lines that should only increase our family plan 20$?

Plus tax, correct. You'll also want to pick up two feature/dumb phones so you can register those imei's for the 'extra' lines in order to remove the required data features that go along with that process. Not sure if care is still willing/able to provide dummy imei's to do that for you. You could probably find two flip phones for $10/ea at target/best buy/craigslist.

While it's likely to be the latter, where did you hear no more dummy IMEIs? And how would ATT handle getting some phones active other wise?

Example: you put the IMEI of a Nexus 4 in the system and it only provisions for 3G feature phones (last I checked). Put random android HSPA+ or LTE IMEI and it works like a charm (for H+ only of course).

Or am I reading what you are saying wrong?

I really hate this plan with a passion, it makes no sense. You're going to pay $552 over the life time of those two new contracts (including the $36 activation fees). Just pay the early upgrade cost. AT&T will atleast knock $100 off the retail price for starting a new contract on the existing lines even if it isnt really upgrade time yet. You can even trade in your existing phones to use towards the price of the new ones.

Check fast facts, its nestled away in there, I expect to hear more about it in the coming weeks. From what I've heard a customer will have to have the device with them and you'll have to use that IMEI. Not sure how that'll work for someone who wants to put an iphone on prepaid or something like that. Also I've only done/seen a few Nexus 4s but from what I can tell they activate right to H+.

My N4 activated just fine back in November. It shows as a generic phone (Nokia image) on my online page, but it works just fine with HSPA+.

@Duckman Used to be that you could call and say 'hurr I don't have an imei.' and care would say "oh don't worry sir, I will provide one for your account" and they would just use 111111111111111111 in order to provision the SIM card. My point was that I believe they stopped being able to do that, some time around when they rolled out the hspa+ feature code. The old 'smartphone & web' feature used to work fine for any smartphone that wasn't a BB.

Do what i do when someone wants to do that, sell them a home phone and have management bump their upgrade up (obviously only do that if management is willing to back you).

I do agree though, that for the most part people really need to just suck it up and do the early upgrade option, its honestly not even the worst pricing, specifically for iphones.

Today I cancelled the account by porting to TMobile. I'm seeing my "last bill" on ATTs website but somehow it does not show an ETF...Is this because I somehow got folded under the "old" ETF policy? Or will the ETF hammer drop later?

For ATT reps, in case you didn't know (I didn't until yesterday ) HTC is offering the One at $249 for employees, plus a trade in of up to $249 back depending on the phone. Good deal even with out the trade in, the terms say it has to stay on your personal line for 60 days although arguably they can't track it or won't track it.

SQUEAK.
I woke up this morning to a notice that I'd hit 90% of my data. This is really unusual, but I figured I was probably a couple of days from the end of the cycle.

I open up the app to check my data, and nope, it's day 1. I'm on wifi 90% of my day. I called the rep and after nearly 30 minutes about asking me if I used iMessage and did I download any movies (after telling her I spend all day on wifi except when I'm driving), she finally tells me that it's a glitch in the system because her side is showing that I haven't used any data at all.

Is that plausible? They sent the alert this morning, and the app is showing the correct information for minute usage.

Well, it would be your own equipment, AT&T policy is you cannot put any personally owned equipment on your COU, so that one would be a call for your manager (I personally would not put any equipment I owned on my work account).

That being said, read through the terms and conditions at htcchampions.com, there is no where in the conditions where they say they will charge you back the cost of the phone if you don't follow the 60 days. And since it isn't through AT&T and they don't have your social, i'm not sure how they would enforce it anyway.
