Are there any good tense gambling anime/manga on the level of Kaiji/Zero? Abstract gambles or standard ones really.

e: The more tense the better.

Any self respecting anime fan owes it to themselves to read Saikyou Densetsu Kurosawa at some point, really.

Are there any animes out that that wont seem worthlessly inadequate under the smothering shadow that masterpiece?

You'd probably like Fate/Zero. Made by the same guy and everything.

It's not completely the same thing but you might like Buraiden Gai, done by the same guy as well. Has a less depressing ending while still being kinda harsh/depressing during the main meat.

Although I don't think it's as good as Kurosawa, it's short so eh.

I'd recommend reading the S;G novel over the anime honestly.

The adaptation is great though, but I found the original to be better.

Sorry, I wasn't looking for which to go with next, though thanks for the suggestions. Just saying where I was headed next for no particular reason. So the novel of S;G is available in english? I have only ever read Battle Royale so I'm definitely interested in expanding my horizons in terms of fiction reading.

It's a visual novel (although just to be clear, it has no unsavory content) and while you'd have to probably import a copy but there is a complete English translation patch floating around.

So I just finished Jormungand and despite some issues with the ending I thought it was pretty much awesome from start to finish. Are there any other shows (manga is fine too) that are similar? I hear people throw around Black Lagoon and I actually have the dub of it sitting on my bookshelf but I never ended up watching it, but besides that is there anything else I should look into?

With the measly budget that Madoka Magica had, Gen Urobuchi must have been forced hold back, and yet he still dreamed up a masterpiece. That was a show that really blew me away.

But after watching Fate/Zero, I only now can claim to have witnessed the pure genius of Gen Urobuchi. On top of that, pretty much every aspect of the show mirrored the quality of the writing.

Even though not everyone would enjoy the atmosphere or seriousness of the show, I absolutely believe this is something everyone should watch.

e: I hear Fate/Stay Night is pretty terrible by comparison and that the best way to get the story of Stay Night is from the VN. True?

Yes the anime covers the worst of the routes (:can:) and is just not a good adaptation in general. If you don't want to actually read the VN yourself there's a great LP of it on the archives.

This really is basically the same thing as reading it yourself though, just without voices or sound effects or (unless you make a concentrated effort to keep up with the links) music or other special effects. F/SN has pretty good production values, so I'm not sure why you'd do this to yourself. Just read the VN, it's pretty darn good.

I suggested it mostly because I know some people read LPs and stuff at work and they'd have an easier time reading through a few updates on break than reading it proper. I do agree reading the VN (especially with the RN patch) is the better option though.

Considering the lead voice actress (allegedly?) said she didn't want to voice the character anymore due to how creepily the LN series ended you should probably just stay away from it period.

It's a real shame Angel Beats didn't get the 50 or so episodes it was originally going to get.

Although there's always the VN that Key said they wanted to make, whenever they get around to it. :sigh:

Looking for some decent death/near death game series to read/watch

I just started reading this last night and was wondering why it was a guilty pleasure but I'm 4 volumes in now and I can totally see why :v: Some of the ways the creator tries to sneak in panty shots is pretty funny and the general craziness is keeping me reading though. It's interesting to read a manga like this where it's the protagonist who's doing all these crazy cheats and stuff instead of his opponent.

I'd recommend the anime of Kaiji over the manga, if only because the narrator and voice acting/music in general really adds a lot to the experience.

Having started watching it, I'd agree. Does it end early or do anything really different then the manga though?

Nah it's a pretty solid adaptation, however the two seasons only cover the first two "series" of kaiji, so you'd have to go to the manga for part 3 and 4 since I don't think they're going to animate it anytime in the near future.
Be prepared though because we are over a year behind translation wise and a new chapter only comes out like every two weeks if that.

It's manga only but I'd also recommend Gambling Emperor Zero, it's by the same guy and is basically Kaiji jr. The stakes are usually as high but it is printed in a shonen mag so it's a bit lighter on the despair. Still worth reading though.

Liar Game is also on hiatus for an unspecified amount of time last time I checked, but yeah It's pretty good.

Deadman Wonderland was pretty good, I haven't really bothered reading it since it came back from Hiatus but I enjoyed it even if it kinda went in a different direction than I expected.

I didn't watch most of the anime adaptation but that's kind of sad to hear that the side characters stay static in it. All of them got pretty decent character development in their respective endings in the VN, Except for like Daru.

Does anyone happen to know the name of this one zombie manga? The whole setup was that the MC was a teenager (I think?) and was in prison when poo poo went south. I remember reading the like 5 chapters translated around a year ago then completely forgot about it. It wasn't too amazing but it seemed like it could have ended up being interesting.

I recently watched One Outs, Kaiji and I'm reading Liar Game right now. Is there any more mind gamey stuff like this out there? (I already read Death Note a few years ago and I liked it a lot)

I only watched the first season of Kaiji but I think I might skip the second unless it fixes the pacing. It's kind of a shame because the gambles themselves were actually pretty cool but everything just took forever

The second season is even worse about the pacing in Kaiji sadly. I'm talking like 12 episodes on a single game of Pachinko bad. It was pretty infuriating being blueballed every week when it was airing.

For something better paced I'd recommend Gambing Emperor Zero, made by the same guy and it's much more better paced overall.

Although it lacks the impending despair that Kaiji has since Zero is kind of a mary sue, but the games are still interesting and it can get pretty tense at certain points.

I asked this in the Seinen thread but I thought I'd get more opinions by asking here: I'm looking for a series (manga preferred but I have no issues if its an anime) that has the main character sort of thrust into the villain/bad guys group and how that plays out. I recently binged what was out of Tokyo Ghoul which ended up being pretty neat. Shamo, Ikigami, and Akame ga kill were all recommended to me but I haven't gotten a chance to check any of them out yet. Don't care if it's supernatural or not, but modern setting is definitely a plus.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (Part 4 in particular)

Steins;Gate is pretty well paced and doesn't have much dead air (that I remember at least, it's been like two years since I read it) I'm not quite sure what could have been edited or cut that didn't add something to the narrative.

Ibram Gaunt

I think people who get turned off and drop S;G before it gets going miss out on the fact that the MC being a huge weirdo is intentional because he is not a well adjusted person. You, the viewer are supposed to think he's kind of a loser. Overall I think it's a great series even if it has some parts I'd say are ~problematic~ regarding a specific character but I found myself still enjoying it alot.

You can even buy the VN in english now which has a gorgeous artstyle and IMO is better than the anime (not by much though). It doesn't have any porn or any gross poo poo that most VNs have too so there's that.

Ibram Gaunt

Gantz had a really good start, and stays pretty decent for a large chunk of time and then devolves into utter garbage until the end. If you want to check it out, I'd advise pretending it ended after the Osaka arc.

Mirai Nikki would have been way better if the author themselves didn't clearly have a yandere fetish and tried to twist the whole codependent love thing as something you as the viewer are supposed to view as a good conclusion. Maybe I'm just an idiot and that wasn't the intention but it basically soured the whole experience for me.
