I haven't gone past the prologue in CC because I can't stand the protagonist's personality. Maybe one of these days I'll make another attempt at it but I'm just not sure if it's worth it.

How does that make you feel? Me: I hate her. Shiki: Can't we just be friends?

Is Edelweiss's translation really as crappy as it initially seems? Based on the first scene, English is not the translator's first language.

Wouldn't the retranslation already be included in the game if he's downloaded it anytime since it came out in, what, 2011? That's how they typically do patches, anyway - a separate download to apply to an existing install, and have it already applied to new downloads of the game.

Cross Channel is the only VN i've ever played where I felt like I didn't "get" it. Like there was a message there that I just couldn't understand for some reason, beneath all the crazy hosed up stuff. Maybe it was just the translation, but it felt like nothing was really clear or cut and dry, and in a way that confused me rather than provoked thought. I was pretty hostile to it when I finished reading it, but i'm considering doing a second runthrough.

I haven't played it, but from what I've heard Cross Channel is really heavy on Japanese-specific prose and such, so maybe a lot of that was lost in translation?

I'm playing with a medium level of translation notes and they range from "he said this with a spanish accent on all the vowels for some reason" to "he's referring to this book publisher who made this book series which had a main character who felt this way, once". There's just an insane amount of references and I can't tell what is the translation notes and what is the main character saying complete gibberish because he's a mental case. Sometimes parenthesis means translation notes sometimes it means internal monologue, sometimes it's translation notes on internal monologue. I don't doubt this translation was difficult to accomplish.

The Amaterasu guy is better than he used to be. Rewrite was a pretty decent translation (albeit with some odd mistranslations) and the Comyu one isn't so bad either, but his earlier works are kind of poo poo. He valued speed over quality which is how he managed to poo poo out MLA in like 7 months by himself. Dr. Video Games 0031 fucked around with this message at 22:20 on Jun 8, 2014 |

I actually really like Hisui's route because it really psychs you out and has some pretty good twists. I remember Kohaku's route feeling less coherent than other routes, like they kind of went "ah poo poo we have some reveals we need to make but didn't yet, just chuck 'em in", but it has some pretty good scenes and biggest feel-good moments in the game. To be honest I felt the quality of Tsukihime correlated inversely with Arcueid's screentime in many ways, because I just remember Arcueid's route being boring and info-dumpy, kind of like the Fate route in FSN albeit with a less helpless protagonist.

The writer Tanaka Romeo also wrote the game Saihate no Ima, which I heard was even more convoluted than Cross Channel in some ways. Now he's heading up a game for Minato Soft, makers of Majikoi which is a ridiculous action comedy, and I really have to wonder what that will look like.

Nate RFB posted:1). Since HF is essentially the "Ilya route" as well I would certainly think keeping that from the player until the right time was intended. For the first one, yeah, obviously keeping it from the player until the right time was intended, I just don't think it matters because it's really sort of inconsequential. For the second one, uh, no? Sakura being kind of nuts is the thing that kicks off the plot of HF. Knowing it in advance via Fate/zero will make you look at her scenes in Fate and UBW in a different light, but it gets revealed pretty much as soon as the reader starts wondering about it (and it's not as if the game doesn't beat you over the head with the fact that the shadow is Sakura).

Well, not exactly. The whole bunch of Sakura reveals happen the 9th day. The Sakura=shadow identification starts the 11th day. To make a comparison, they have the timing of the Saber identity reveal in Fate for the first and of Saber stealed by Caster in UBW for the second.

Playing Cross+Channel and a huge plot thing got dropped on me, and I accidentally moused too high and made the menu bar pop down, and clicked the "go real fast button" and when I cancelled it, with perfect comedic timing, the line it stopped on was miki declaring "and that's why I murdered everyone" (or whatever, upon second pass it cleared up). I'm glad there's a "go to last choice" option but goddamn there were only three choices this week so it took a long rear end time to catch up. That arc got tense and mysterious and I liked how he was interrogating everyone like his interpretation of a hard boiled detective, and the H scene felt completely impossible after the recent plot bomb but then the ending made up for it. I'll start it again tomorrow I guess. Apparently nanaka crash was a thing, my friends have heard about it, played it ten years ago extensively, but never knew it was from anything.

Quick question. In Steins;Gate, is the true ending one of the specific character endings, or is it its own ending? No spoilers, as I haven't even gotten a single ending yet. I'm just curious.

OK, thanks! Another question about it: is it locked until all other endings are completed, like most visual novels with a true ending? I normally would assume so, but I also heard that the true ending is so hard that it almost requires a guide to get it, so then maybe the difficulty would be enough to ensure that it would be the last one to obtain.

Nah, you can get it first if you want. The game is structured such that all but 3 endings (2 of the girls and the true) come earlier with choices that really obviously will lead to that girl's ending. Most of those are pretty quick, so following a true end guide and making a save at those choices to go back to if you're interested in that ending would be the most efficient way to handle it.
