I think you'd be surprised just how many uses you can get out of a little electricity. After all, she isn't called "The Railgun" because she just electrocutes people all the time. Personally, I like to pretend that Railgun is the main story, and Index is the spin-off.

I don't mind the filler in Railgun. Each character actually has a personality instead of being generic dumb anime heroes, so it's at least a little interesting.

That is one of the things that I always found kind of laughable about the Raildex universe. There are a handful of super-powerful living weapons, complete with intimidating nicknames, roaming around the city, but no one ever recognizes any of them. You'd think that even in a city full of super-powered psychic wizards, the seven people with enough power to level city blocks would have a little more exposure.

Honestly, a level 5 Kuroko would probably be story-breaker levels of overpowered. Crazy Esper on the loose? Just teleport him directly into an Anti-Skill holding cell. I dunno, I actually think this episode expanded on Misaka's character quite a bit. Generic harem hijinks aside, you get a good glimpse of just how much the Level 6 Project actually affects her emotionally. Particularly the fact that Misaka has begun to blame herself for the deaths of her Sisters, and questions whether or not she deserves a happy life. It's a much better set-up for her ultimate decision at the end of the arc, which felt incredibly forced and stupid in Index. Also, I find it funny that Misaka's new plan seems to be destroying Tree Diagram, with the logic that Academy City couldn't possibly cover it up. Except that a certain dull gentlemen already did that accidentally and nobody gave two shits.

When did feminism in fiction change from "Hey guys, could we maybe get some positive female role-models and a better variety of female characters?" to "Down with the evil Patriarchy! No mercy to the vile penis-bearers!" Having an all-girl cast is feminist-positive now? With that kind of logic, Queen's Blade would be a triumphant work of female empowerment. Honestly, I think I'd be more disappointed if Misaka just solved everything on her own. Misaka is strong character, yes, but a good character also has flaws and limits. And it's pretty clear in this arc that Miaska has reached hers. Arguably, Misaka is in this position in the first place because she incorrectly assumed that she had to take the burden of her mistakes on all by herself. Part of the resolution is Misaka learning to rely on others because she can't be the hero all the time(unlike Touma, but gently caress him I'll get to that). The only real problem I have with the resolution is that the character that Misaka ultimately confides in is Touma. A character that got maybe 10 mins of screentime in season 1. And while I realize the Sisters Arc was originally an Index arc, it feels incredibly dumb in Railgun. Misaka already has her own posse of sidekicks, but instead Touma just stumbles in and Deus ex Punchinas Accelerator in the face. I think the arc would have been great with literally any other character in Touma's place.

That episode was cheesy as gently caress. But I guess I'm just a sucker for that kind of thing because it was completely awesome. Kongou seriously needs her own spin-off manga. Also, sequel baiting during the end credits? Not cool, JC Staff. Not cool.

Railgun is better because it has better writing. That's pretty much all there is to it. Edit: Disclaimer - My familiarity with each only applies to the anime adaptations.

Well yeah, I'd file not having an overpowered self-insert escapist fantasy main character under "good writing". I feel like Railgun just has better characterization, better story structure, and more clear-cut narrative goals than Index.
