dvdasa.com

David Choe is a Korean American artist. He's done a lot of high profile work, including painting murals for the first Facebook office and getting paid in stocks instead of cash (worth over $200 million as of the Facebook IPO). He is a recovering gambling addict and a depraved sex addict. He will go too extreme lengths for his friends and his greatest fear is catching the STD known as 'feelings'. Don't call him Choey.

Asa Akira is an award winning porn star, Fleshlight model, writer, and Dave's ex. She's married to another porn star, Tony Ribas. She shares Dave's attitude that nothing is too extreme or private for the show, and that by revealing all her darkest secrets she becomes unblackmailable.

:nws: http://i.imgur.com/ewtIqUu.jpg :nws:

Off the sidelines and into the limelight, Bobby Namba runs the trivia challenge. There is no winner, but the loser has to smell his gross, sweaty earlobe. He's married to the mysterious Quiet C, who has refused to return to the show after one disastrous appearance on Dave's old podcast.

Money Mark is a musician/producer best known for his work with the Beastie Boys, but he's collaborated with nearly every artist in the industry. He does the music for the show and is always working on several top secret projects.

Critter is Dave's trusted driver/chef/publicist/handyman/lover/manservant/bodyguard. Dave is constantly screaming at him for his unprofessional attitude on mic. He's a bit germophobic, so he tends to bleach his dick after sex.

Valentin
AKA The Validator. He doesn't say much but when he speaks, it's usually gold. He once smacked a woman in front of a California Pizza Kitchen, but she totally deserved it.

Bill Poon
The Pooner is a professional whore transporter. He drives prostitutes/hookers/escorts/porn stars (including Asa) to and from their various jobs. He is one of the two people that has gotten laid on the show. I mean literally ,on the show, with an audio recording of the whole thing, from his enjoyment of eating caviar and gummy bears out of the escort's rear end to the rythmic humping and moaning that followed. Yeah, this is that kind of show.

The other dude to get laid on the show is Steve Lee, aka Steevie Weebey, the funnier brother of Mad TV's Bobby Lee. Dave has adopted him as a sort of step-son. He appreciates sex toys, often loving them until they're literally falling apart. He also raps under the name Quangou. He formed a band with Dave and Money Mark called Mangchi.

---------------------------------------------------------

What the hell is Rosebud?
In July 2014 there was a 10 part series of episodes that took place in the Big Bear ranch in [hidden location] where Dave, Steve, and Money Mark were recording the first Mangchi album (linked below). While at the ranch, Dave and Asa got a bit too cuddly one night and ended up loving. Even though she and her husband are porn stars, they have an agreement that they won't gently caress anyone outside of their job (especially an ex like Dave). After revealing what had happened on the show, they admitted they were just kidding and pranking everyone else...or maybe not? Anyway, all of a sudden the podcasts are all taken down and the site goes blank except for a picture of a rosebud. After nearly a month of silence, Dave says that he the unblackmailable has finally been blackmailed and the show must end. A few days later he admitted that this too was a joke and that the show would be back soon and it seems like the haitus was mostly to work on a bunch of extra content. Read through the thread if you want more info.

In any case, a lot of the old content seems to be gone so here are some links to access it:

Other Stuff
  • Thumbs Up!, a show Dave and his friend Harry Kim did for Vice where they hitchhiked across the USA and China. A fourth and final season was filmed and will be released soon.
  • Insatiable: Porn - A Love Story, Asa's critically acclaimed autobiography.
  • Dirty Hands, a documentary about Choe made by Harry Kim.
  • Koreans Gone Bad, the podcast that preceded DVDASA. It didn't last long but its worth checking out.
  • Yoshi Didn't, a podcast by Yoshi Obayashi, who was on DVDASA until he got fired for stealing Dave's exotic chips and lying about it.
  • Into The Limelight, an album composed of Bobby Trivia's awful singing, Zell's sexy voice, and Money Mark's amazing production.
  • Nega Mola, Mangchi's first album.
  • Hong Dynasty an Instagram soap opera done by the DVDASA crew.

I wonder what's going on with Harry Kim. He's apparently in exile training to be an accountant? I really want a Thumb's Up season 4 :(.

Edit: Oh my god Dave is so gross :barf:.

I'm fully aware that David Choe is an rear end in a top hat. That doesn't mean he and his friends aren't entertaining!

On today's episode, the returns of Joey Showbizawitz! And he brings along his friend, porn gossip columnist and creepy rape fantasizer Luke Ford.

Apr 7, 2007

It's amazing how often Dave brings up Yoshi, even after firing him.

Anyway, on this week's Thursday episode is Bobby Hill's voice actor Pamela Adlon! She's also on Californication and Louie.

Bobby speaking to Bobby is a real treat.

EDIT: Don't want to bump the thread since the last post was mine, but I updated the OP to reflect the current situation on the show. RIP Yoshi :911:.

Harris Wittels is a Phish fan. I don't know why I didn't just assume he had some sort of drug addiction...still, it took me by surprise this episode. Love the guy and all his work, hope he gets better soon :shobon:.

Also, I've gotta agree that I'm liking the show without Yoshi too. The guy is just too cynical and depressing sometimes. And in his last few episode he barely participated at all. Then again, Money Mark and to a lesser extent Valentin don't exactly contribute much either. Hoping they start getting more involved in the coming weeks.

Apr 7, 2007

Oh wow, I didn't realize that. I just listened to the latest episode of Yoshi Didn't today, it's the first time I've listened since he had David Choe as a guest way back when. It was actually pretty good, not very funny but an interesting look at sexual desires and fetishes with a scientist that did a bunch of research on the topic.

Congrats to Lilit for breaking her long relationship dry spell, but it doesn't surprise me that it quickly lead to her cutting ties with Yoshi. The man just doesn't seem capable of maintaining a long-term relationship of any type.

In other news, DVDASA will be having its first live episode at Comic Con.

The Bobby Lee episode was surprisingly entertaining. I usually can't stand that guy.

They just (as in, about 10 seconds ago as of this post) wrapped up their first live episode with a whole bunch of guests including a couple of porn stars, a 19 year old who desperately wants to lose her virginity and the voice actor that plays Lamar in GTA 5, among others. It was also the debut of the new room layout, which is a lot better since everyone can see eachother now.

I only saw the last hour of it but it was pretty good. Dave said depending on the feedback they get they might go live every week but if they do it will only be once per week.

DVDASA is now hiring.

While the most recent episode was a bit dull, the last few have been among the best they've ever done. I really hope they keep going after #100. I want a live episode from B-Triv's wedding, damnit!

E: Also, as pointed out in the comments on that episode, it's pretty obvious James Jean's secret location is...just another room in Dave's warehouse/studio. Click here for the reason he's hiding out. Pretty hosed up...He got Dave Foley'd!

I don't want to spoil it but I think episode 104 is the first time that's ever happened in a podcast.

Even Dave said "I don't think we should be doing this"...and then "but let's do it anyway".

EDIT: By the way, you definitely want to watch the video for this one and not just listen to the audio, especially the last half hour or so.

I just updated the OP. I didn't include B-Lee and Steve as part of the cast since their appearances are sporadic. I do think that they are both responsible for some of the funniest/most memorable moments on the show, though. On the other hand, I know Bobby Lee is a guest on a ton of different podcasts so I do wonder if he just recycles his stories or if the stuff he says on DVDASA is 'exclusive' to this show.

Edit: Also, I think I'm going to ask a mod to change the title of the thread. Something like "DVDASA - [quote from the show]". What quote should we go with?

Was it really about stealing chips or something like that?

I'm working through the earlier ones but didn't get to that point.

There were a series of issues leading to Yoshi getting fired, the chips were just the final straw. Yoshi was never contributing to the show, and he'd constantly try to set limits to what could be spoken about on air and do takebacks for things that were already said.

Mordecai Sanchez posted:

I don't buy that ...

So did you write this article? If not your timing is impeccable...in that its like a month or two after the episode aired. And with this show that would be at least a month after they recorded the episode.

Similar articles were posted on Gawker and Buzzfeed. Vice on HBO coincidentally played a rerun instead of the scheduled episode featuring Dave today.

The internet really loves latching onto things they know nothing about and telling everyone how offended they are. At least you actually listened to the show so you have an idea of the context and Dave's tendency to BS/exaggerate. There are people who know nothing about the show or the people on it now calling Dave a rapist.

Context isn't important, all that matters is some site like XOJane or some popular Tumblr user decides to sic their followers on someone and they all rush in to say how outraged they are and how this person they never heard of before today needs to go to jail or be publically flogged for saying something stupid.

And I'm not defending Dave's story either, even I found that episode to be going too far, and it was only redeemed by Asa calling Dave out and laughing at how fake the ending to the story sounded. But I get what kind of show this is. I know that Dave is a millionaire with a publicist that probably wouldn't let him incriminate himself on air and leave that episode up. I get that Dave plays up his offensive/misogynist character for entertainment reasons. Is Gawker going to run an article titled "Facebook Graffiti Artist hires escort, puts caviar in her butthole" too?

To sum it up from Dave's perspective, in the wise words of Val "You don't know me".

I'm not a huge fan of the ranch episodes since they just go over stuff Dave has talked about a million times before. I guess that's true for the David Chang episodes too (aka DVDDVD?) but I don't know, I really enjoyed both of those so far. Something about two people who have 'made it' talking about life and the problems they face is just interesting. Choey's story about the hard ice cream was hilarious.

But yeah, the next episode needs to have at least one Lee brother on it. I want Steve's review of the black-rear end sex toy.

For tl;dr purposes and for posterity since the DVDASA front page is constantly changing:

1) DVDASA isn't over. Confirmed by Asa here and the producer Reuben here

2) The fourth and final season of Thumbs Up! with Harry Kim is coming soon. If you haven't seen them yet the first three seasons are pretty great and can be seen for free on Vice.

3) Choey and Critter are releasing a show called Global Chaos Tours where they apparently go around the world to dangerous places to 'drink, gently caress, suck, fight, kill, explore and destroy' everything. Apparently they tried shopping this one around to several networks and were turned down by all of them.

4) Steve and Poons' escapades in Macau were documented and will be released. The Macau Brothers trailer can be seen here.

5) If you haven't already seen it, the first Mangchi album Nega Mola was released and more stuff by them and a Steve Lee (Quangou) solo album are on the way.

A new Mangchi song and video (not on the album) was just released here.

6) If you've got a lot of money to waste, Dave's new book Snowman Monkey BBQ is coming soon. It's got a bunch of new art plus pictures of some of his crazier real-life text message conversations.

7) The DVDASA crew + Stacy Adams made/are making a soap opera on Instagram or something like that? It's called Hong Dynasty. I haven't checked it out yet but someone has conveniently compiled it all together in one playlist here.

8) Dave was cleaning up his room when he found $100,000 in cash in a shoebox from his gambling days. He offered it to Critter, but of course he turned it down. So instead, they'll be giving away the entire amount in cash to one person. The rules are pretty vague right now but if you're interested, follow all the DVDASA and Mangchi folks on instagram for clues.

For those of you who want more DVDASA and haven't listened to KGB, you should definitely check it out. It would be nice if we had more appearances from Harry Kim, Joey Kurtzman (aka Maury Showbizawitz), and hell, even Yoshi Obayashi on DVDASA.

Some updates:

1) Tomorrow is the 25 hour DVDASA spectacular!

Dave posted:

The schedule is:
12:00AM — 03:00AM PST Live DVDASA Show @ DVDASA.com
03:00AM — 05:00PM PST DVDASA Reddit AMA Clusterfuck Bonanza*
05:00PM — 06:00PM PST Nap time.
06:00PM — 11:59PM Wedding** and MANGCHI concert.

*The winner of Critter's $100,000 Cross Country Cash Contest will be announced during the AMA. By the way I didn't really follow the contest but it was apparently a lot crazier than I imagined. Clues were found in Alaska, NYC, Detroit, Tijuana, LA, San Francisco, Denver, San Jose, Las Vegas, and Catalina, and at least a few people were actually driving/flying between all these places hoping to win.
**The wedding is just a random couple who happen to be DVDASA fans.

2) The Dark Dick is back!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O25tDL2hcLU

3) I'm not quite sure who asked for this but Bill Poon, Bobby Trivia, and Critter just released the first episode of their spinoff show which is all about "sports and everything other than sex": The Billy Bob Crit Show.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PH6jpNGVbds

4) Nega Mola by Mangchi is officially out on itunes and Google Play. But if you look around it's not hard to find most of the tracks for free.
