The Nitro-est ending- a main event that never even starts because of a run in, SEEYOUON Was there a story behind that? Did another segment go long?

"We need thirty extra minutes for this PPV" (PPV features several promos and interviews that they probably should have done on Nitro, and multiple Nitro Girl segments.)

Well, poo poo. Local Drafthouse is showing Pulp Fiction this Tuesday, the same night as that Nitro. I have hard choices to make.

They say the police station is across the street no less than four times. And when Goldberg arrives after the main event, he does so in a car. The police drove him. That show was everything I expected and so much more.

Wow, the pacing has gone completely to poo poo. Now it's stupid AND boring.

I think my favorite part is how the No Limit Soldiers/Rednecks angle is instantly dead. It's 1999, audiences will pop for just about anything happening at first. But the instant Master P starts shouting "Hootie Hoo!", crickets.

# ¿ Aug 3, 2016 05:39 |

I can imagine how doing a hip hop angle looked good on paper, rap was increasingly popular and wrestling was as mainstream as it was gonna get in '99. But they spent way too much money and P is so bad on the mic. I'm not even sure how much the Rednecks being outnumbered and the song being popular even mattered- the No Limit Soldiers are dead in their very first segment.

It's ironic that after Bischoff left WCW instantly killed the Revolution push which was his one remaining good idea.

Halloween Jack posted:What made Rick so bad? I mean, he's bad, I'm not taking up for him. He was boring, a bad worker, and his segments were meaningless, but I could say all those things about several other guys. Part of it was the push he got under Bischoff, and another part is the contrast with Scott. Scott Steiner changed his image for the late 90s, changed his working style, his personality, etc.- sure, that transformation involved taking all the steroids in the world, and his personality was apparently no different from him IRL, but the results on screen were entertaining. Rick came out with "If you don't like me, bite me!" and that was just no substitute. (And again, Scott being out for all this time REALLY hurts. It's like "Sorry about that, here's his way less interesting brother.") Also, I think it's Rick wasn't good enough to be as convincingly dominant as he was- his stuff never looked that convincing, he wasn't effectively sneaky or underhanded, he just sorta won matches because that was the booking. I cannot remember a single interesting thing he ever did in the ring.

I feel like I need to emphasize and repeatedly remind everyone that Russo clearly meant that to be the show where everyone would say "It's all coming together!" and recognize what a genius he is and how brilliant his storytelling is. And of course it ends with an nWo reunion. (Presumably Goldberg nearly slicing his arm off is next week?)

The idea was he was gonna face Benoit in a three match series, so it's a standard kind of "preview" of the PPV. Except that Jarrett is supposed to be the heel (despite the "shades of grey" thing Russo kinda slid back to faces and heels at the end) so putting him at a disadvantage is counterproductive. And also who wants to watch JJ wrestle three matches in a row anyway, and also, finally, you risk injuring your guy before the PPV which is exactly what happened.
|
# ¿ Apr 22, 2017 21:58 |

So they're still having the three match series but with someone not involved with the story at all. I wonder if they're going to try and explain how Benoit is in the world title match and why it's loser leaves town

The rare WCW show where the main event is better than the undercard. The promotion is on fire now. Not in the sense that things are good and exciting but in the sense that it is burning to the ground and soon naught will be left but ash. (USA Wrestling was not a bad show.)

I love that even after Russo they can't book a good show to save their lives. Like even the interim between Bischoff and Russo was just dull. There was really something terminal in the culture at WCW. It wasn't just who was at the helm.
