I rarely post but since there's Soto chat I figured I'd join in a bit. I'm actually about to head to a monastery here in the US for a six week Ango period on Monday. This will be my second Ango retreat and I'm happy to answer any questions folks may have. Also as for the waiting outside the gates bit discussed earlier, I believe that's considered part of tangaryo which is a probationary period for new monks. I think a certain amount of picking and choosing is inevitable, given the access you can have these days to multiple traditions at once. I do think its a good idea to settle into a single tradition if you've got the opportunity, but I wouldn't be overly concerned about having influences from multiple places.
