Glory to Mankind.

This was an incredibly dull episode of Harmontown and I would rather Dan didn't go off on long, repetitive arguments where he shows a fundamental misunderstanding of how a society can realistically function.

There's an interesting and deep conversation to be had about sex offenders'rights and how they should be treated by society. Emily and Kumail were engaging in it. Dan kept on repeating the words barriers and walls and society over and over and dominated the conversation with the same tired rant.

Thanks Cinco
There are no walls. Walls don't exist. It's a beach, and we're in the surf, and we get out of the surf and it's just another beach.

What I'm trying to say is, I propose we stop proposing.

It was a pretty weird episode. I was kinda disappointed no one called Kumail on his statements about evolution solving pedophilia for us. It really sounded like he was on the verge of saying that any sexuality that can't result in a healthy child is invalid, and will be bread out of the species. edit: Just perused the reddit topic, and Kumail posted to walk back "babies can't have babies" plan for breeding out pedophilia.

It was also kind of frustrating how Dan brushed off the input from one of the audience members (Lauren?) about the role of fantasy in human sexuality. He was so caught up on the idea of thought-crime, as if it was about to tear civilization apart, based on some dude having child pornography and brain damage.

They really should've brought Emily on stage sooner. Would've been nice if she could've participated in some actual D&D, too.

edit: Also, praise Jeff for kicking Goldberg off the mic when he did.

Arstan

He wasn't even saying that. I think he mentioned something about "proposing we stop proposing."

It seemed like it was all about thought-crime and where society sets limits on the views of its inhabitants. Whenever rehab and study of pedophilia came up, he'd jump to all the things that are "worse" and how we aren't solving them.

And even though he kept citing the pedophile with a chopped up brain, it kinda felt like it all went back to Lizette getting shouted down by the audience for asserting her right to make stupid sweeping judgements in the face of informed opposition.

The whole thing felt like a "slippery slope" argument, but as if we were in Uganda and people were really at risk of being jailed/executed for their privately held, never acted upon, desires.

It was all very confused and aimless.

Terrible episode. Dan ranting about "proposing to stop proposing". Then he went back and changed his point to breaking down walls. He actually does have a point there though. Good thing the majority went and saw Breaking Bad instead.

The most frustrating thing here was that he was disinterested in engaging Kumail and Spencer with proper arguments.

I think this is right, although I didn't understand it until someone online explained it. Dan was trying to ask for sympathy while acknowledging the lovely, hurtful things he's done. But he did it by reaching for the worst type of person he could think of. So everyone else on the show was talking about how society should treat pedophiles, while Dan Harmon was trying to talk about how society should treat Dan Harmon.

This week's episode highlighted how weak the show is when both Jeff and Kumail aren't around.

Also I like Rob Schrab and I like Erin's games but they really do not mix, the "I hate all games" schtick got old quickly. They're also all getting worse at D&D every week. I don't know anything about D&D and I don't mind them being bad at actually playing the game, I mean that they're getting worse at making it entertaining because they just squabble with Spencer about what they can and can't do.

I've been catching up on some of the older episodes I'd never heard, and I guess the take-away should be that Jeff's attitude during D&D has improved? He's still a bit of a joykilling naysayer, but boy was he unreasonably irritated by Erin's antics in some of these early episodes.

I think it was episode 14 or 15 where Erin calls or texts Dan from the audience to ask if she's going to be included in D&D, and Jeff's incredulity at her behavior spills over in to the next week's episode. There's just such a weird vibe to his apparent "can you believe how this girl is ruining this make-believe game I also just started playing recently?" stance.

You and your best friend do a show, then your best friend's new girlfriend interrupts the show in the middle of it and inserts herself into it. I don't think it's just the "make-believe game" Jeff is protective of.

And I'd agree Jeff's hostility toward Erin could be considered "unreasonable" if not for the episode a few months back where Dan gets stepped on by the frost giant.

Arstan

It wasn't just the middle of a show, though. They were starting D&D, and it seemed like Erin was trying to slyly get Dan to bring her up on stage to play-- this all after loving Goldberg had stormed up a couple times without Jeff seething.

Supposedly they were a trio of friends before Dan and Erin got romantic, too. But even now, Jeff's always the first to roll out the negativity when Erin's trying to fashion gadgets out of backpacks and bedrolls, as if her insane schemes are really going to drag the game down.

It just rubs me the wrong way, especially with how deftly Spencer has always handled the group. By now, they should trust him to handle whatever stupid ideas they come up with.

edit: I can't stress enough how much Adam Goldberg irritates me.

Glory to Mankind.

To be fair Erin's unwillingness to take a loving hint and her bullheaded determination to do whatever she wants in the face of logic, common sense, or her other friends' wishes ruins d and d far more often than Jeff's prickitude.

There's a line between doing your own thing and actively ruining the game for others because you don't give a gently caress about the game as written. It's like in LoL when you get the dude who runs into enemy forest and only buys wards, no equipment. He's ruining the game for you even if he's having fun being all whacky and whatever.

Notice last weeks podcast where nothing got done and nobody really did anything because Jeff and Kumail, the guys who typically try to take forward movement, were gone. Jeff may be an rear end in a top hat sometimes but at least he keeps the game moving so they don't spend thirty loving minutes tying swords to their goddamn heads and failing to make any attacks. It was one of the worse DND episodes they've had in no small part because nobody was doing anything. Im fine with how Erin plays the game but there's afucking limit,I actually care about the game's narrative moving forward, even if it is slight.

Erin was playing Jeff's character, and some audience member was playing hers. And Kumail's the one who wound up receiving a custom made rope dagger, thanks to his predilection toward tying ropes to daggers. Jeff is the only one who isn't inclined toward goofin' around. They've also been committing way less time to D&D, lately. Even when they bring Spencer up half way through the show, they still end up on some tangent that leaves them with about 20 minutes to spend on the game itself.

And in that very episode, Erin tried to fashion some ridiculous armor out of a backpack and Jeff's cloak of resistance, then realized she could just wear the cloak, and did. I don't think she plays any more selfishly than the rest of the group, especially considering things like Dan goading a frost giant king in to crushing him to death.

edit: It also didn't help that nobody in the group could seem to picture the environment Spencer was describing. They all kept forgetting that they were standing on the heads of statues, and nobody really seemed to get what was or wasn't possible while climbing the chains. Even then, I think it was a far cry from "nobody doing anything." Dan landed a good attack for once, Erin eventually relented on the head-dagger idea, and Schrab ended it on the most intense moment of Chris de Burgh's career.

That whole intro segment was crazy. I'd read a little about it before listening and wanted to give Lisa the benefit of the doubt (bright lights and all that) but, goddamn. That was some seriously persistent hostility. Some Vulture quote and Dan not posting in an AV Club forum thread justify that?

Lisa's friend was nuts. Even Lisa didn't want her to speak because she was saying things like "Lisa is responsible for there being a season 5" which is so completely insane that it was just baffling. Delusional doesn't even begin to cover it.

Also Julietta was brutal too. Dan helped her get a work visa. It took a while to process, completely out of his control, and she's mad at him for not... shutting down Community entirely until she could work on it? Are you serious? He helped you get a work visa at least! You're just some idiot in the audience of his podcast taping, that's already way more than he had to do.
