Not sure if this belongs in the seinen or shounen thread, but apparently Gamaran is ending in 3 chapters. I'm not sure how I feel about this. On one hand, I was sort of looking forward to some overarching plot involving the shogunate where Jinsuke is revealed to have some legitimate motive to his actions other than wanting a bunch of guys to fight each other. On the other, it will avoid all the things that can potentially go wrong with an action/fighting series that runs indefinitely and doesn't have an ending clearly thought out from the beginning.

Most mangas either become so successful that they run forever, and I stop reading them because the interminable status quo just kills something inside me, or they get shitcanned with no ending/get a rushed tacked on ending due to being shitcanned. I very, very much appreciate every manga that can tell its story and finish (hopefully in a satisfying way...).

Is anyone translating Bambino Secondo, the sequel to Bambino? The first was a really awesome cooking manga and I'm really saddened by the fact that it seems like no one is doing the sequel. I know AnonSpore has said he won't be doing Secondo, which is understandable. But you'd think someone would have picked it up, seeing as how it's finally finished.

Well, for starters, the raws available online for Bambino Secondo aren't complete. That means that if you picked it up, eventually you'd have to buy, debind, and scan the volumes yourself, or just throw up your hands and call it a day. I was actually at that point for the last three volumes of Bambino until an extremely charitable fan bought and scanned them for me (I'm still astonished that someone went to all that trouble--scanning manga is a huge loving drag).

There's also the matter of Ban's Fukuoka accent, which can at points be hard to read even for native Japanese. For the average fan translator, poo poo's gonna be pretty hard to read. The source material also includes liberal smatterings of Italian in addition to the Japanese, which according to native Italians is rife with errors. So if you were a huge sperg like me you'd need to consult with someone on the Italian as well.

Though, personally, I'm as surprised as you are. I've gotten more people asking for me to continue Bambino than I have for any other series I've picked up and then consequently dropped because I am a big poopyhead who burns out way too fast. Apparently that enthusiasm doesn't extend to translators, though. Go figure.

Would it be wrong of me to re-up/repost/otherwise-give-props-all-over-again to The Ravages of Time (Chinese title is more literally "Fiery Phoenix Scorches Plains") considering that by now (Volume 49, Chapter 397 in Hong Kong) the author actually did get up to the prelude to the Battle of Chibi (so much for having to leave it to his son) and the climax of Changban?

My main gripe with where it currently is, is that the author's been really skimping on backgrounds ever since Chapter 380 (basically if it's in the daylight and out in the open, he's probably not going to bother with drawing anything other than characters, the ground, buildings and other "ground-level scenery") but I'm still liking where it's going, and hell the manhuajia's still maintaining the intricacy in his characters compared to most manga I've seen, a great example of which I have here from Volume 30, Chapter 244:

Looks like it's done in Japan. I'm guessing there's still a couple more unscanlated chapters. Should be close to being done in English though if it's only 3 volumes.

a manga I read last night: Boku Dake ga Inai Machi/A Town Where Only I Am Missing (Batoto link)

I Am Missing is a monthly manga by Sanbe Kei, and follows Fujinuma Satoru, a 28-year-old, struggling mangaka and part-time pizza delivery boy. 18 years ago, Satoru was caught up in a serial kidnapping case that claimed the lives of several of his classmates, the memories of which he has struggled to forget ever since. In the present day, Satoru is plagued by "reruns", occasionally finding himself trapped in loops of time, repeating the same handful of minutes over and over, until he finds and corrects the "oddity", some small detail in his surroundings that just doesn't seem to fit, and usually presages a great tragedy.

Frustratingly, I can't discuss the specifics of the plot without getting into spoilers. Suffice to say, it puts me in mind of Purple Qualia, in that it starts off a little odd and off-kilter, and then as soon as you think you've got a handle on things and have a feel for the story, suddenly it veers off into entirely new realms.

Plot aside, I think the greatest strength of this one is how well it creates atmosphere and tone. It has a sense of genuine foreboding, all the time, and even the most innocuous and mundane details can seem to bulge with significance, simply by the context they are placed in. It's almost like reading a well-plotted mystery or thriller for the second time, where foreknowledge of what is to come freights early events with entirely new meaning.

So: go read it. Then come back here and post about it, because I desperately need someone to discuss it with.

Wall o' black bars speculation:

Alright, so, the big questions here are, who is the killer, how can Satoru prove it, and how can he save Kayo/the other children/his mother? I think the clue here is to remember the point of the reruns: to find the oddity. Satoru forgot that, here; he's so focused on addressing the symptoms of the problem, on keeping Kayo out of danger, that he's neglecting the cause, the bit that isn't quite right. So, what's going on in 1988 that isn't quite right?

The big one is: Satoru himself. Reversed causality of this sort is hardly unusual in time travel stories (well, "reversed causality" is practically the definition of a time travel story), so we should be asking ourselves what, if anything, about Satoru's behaviour as effected by his future knowledge could precipitate Kayo's murder.
Which brings us to the second point: deja vu. Satoru is constantly besieged by the sense that he's seen this all before, somehow, even when he's convinced that he's changing things. This would suggest that this is not the first time that he's rerun this scenario. His lost memories ties into this: Satoru is not a reliable judge of what he is and is not changing, because he simply cannot remember.
Kayo. There are a few ways in which her behaviour is sketchy, some of which is pretty easily explained by her abuse and some which isn't, and here I'm thinking of the latter. Specifically, what she says in the science centre (that Satoru is a wannabe manga artist), and a few chapters before that, she refers to Satoru as an "imposter". How does she know he wants to be a mangaka? Satoru doesn't know. It could be a hint that she's been watching him in class, but... the manga thing hasn't been brought up in this time period at all. It's a plot point that belongs exclusively to 2006. Does child-Satoru have that dream yet? According to Kayo, when she calls Satoru an "imposter", what she means is that he fakes his emotions (and that they have this in common). Plausible, definitely. Probable, even. But this is coming on the heels of a stretch where Satoru is struggling to act like his child-self, he himself wonders if that is what she's noticed. Even after she explains herself, I'm not sure I want to abandon that line of thought just yet, and so what I'm wondering is: is Kayo a time-traveller as well? Does she remember Satoru's previous loops? Is she herself looping?
Another person who seems sketchy to me is Ken'ya. He's highly suspicious of Satoru, constantly questioning what he's doing and why, and does not seem to act or think much like a ten-year-old. That wouldn't say much, in most manga, but in this one the ten-year-olds do typically seem to act like ten-year-olds.
The teacher is probably the sketchiest character in the entire 1988 cast. Everything he says, especially to Satoru and about Kayo, seems incredibly slimy and untrustworthy, to me, and I am 90% certain that he is the kidnapper in 2006. They have the same face. When Satoru told him to "save Hinadzuki quickly", my face lit up like a tree.
Then there's Yuuki. Satoru is so sure he didn't do it, so sure... and then there's loli porn. Huh. Huh. So, the kidnapper's still at large in 2006, when Yuuki is in prison. Teacher guy is a dead ringer for him and sketch as hell. But the author wants to throw the suspicion back on Yuuki? It doesn't make me think the teacher isn't guilty, but now I have to consider the possibility that Yuuki isn't innocent. Suddenly, the narrative has to be a hell of a lot more convoluted to accommodate this. Is Yuuki an accomplice? Copy-cat? Is the teacher a copy-cat? If Yuuki really was given that stuff by a friend, who is the friend? The teacher, maybe?
Hitomi: doesn't fit the pattern. He's the wrong gender, and Satoru makes special note of the fact that he was the wrong age. So. But then, is two prior data points a pattern?
The second victim: who the gently caress is she? It seems weird, narratively, that one victim out of three is unimportant strikes me as odd. Five victims out of seven being filler? Fair enough. But the list here is so short and she's the only exception... could this play into the previous two points somehow? The teacher kills Kayo (on behalf on the mother? We know she's involved somehow), gets a taste for it. Finds his second victim elsewhere, doesn't want to poo poo where he eats, wisely. Yuuki is then inspired to take Hitomi, which is why he doesn't fit, and takes the fall for all three. How do the police know that these killings are connected, anyway? Simple probability?
Where the gently caress is Katagiri in 1988? She's built up to be a major character, then straight up vanishes for eight chapters. Answer: she's not born yet. As a high schooler, she can't be more than 18. Which is an interesting number. Is it coincidence that the number of years between the two time periods is the exact length of time that it takes a newborn to grow into an adult? Crazy :nanomachines: theory: she's Kayo's reincarnation, born on the day she died. This is why Kayo knows Satoru is a manga artist, this is why her words echo Kayo's in the first chapter.
Kayo's entry in the anthology is interesting: it is the exact inverse of the manga's title: a not-town where everyone is missing except for me. Kayo, we're told, thinks this is what paradise is. We're also told that this is a cry for help, that this is a product of Kayo's disease. So, the island is hell, and in reality it's the town that is paradise? Satoru would certainly agree.
But what's Satoru's entry? He makes a special note of the fact that he never read his own entry, and this is never brought up again. We never find out which of the two Ken'ya was referring to. So, what significance could it possibly have? Well, one obvious point is that it's a message from Satoru before he was possessed by future-Satoru. It could be that this highlights some discrepancy between child-Satoru and future-Satoru's impersonation of child-Satoru; possibly a clue to what I was talking about earlier, something that Satoru's done that's started all of this, or maybe it's a sly hint from Ken'ya that he knows Satoru is no longer Satoru. Boring answer: it's about Satoru's dream to be a mangaka, and that's how Kayo knows.

I've been reading "Cradle of Monsters" by him which is not bad. I'll have a look at this one.

Cradle of Monsters I read as well, and was not terribly impressed. It's High School of the Dead in a capsized boat with generous ladlings of urolagnia :stare:

This is another thing entirely; I don't know if there's a single panel of fanservice in the entire thing. The difference is like night and day.

I don't know if that makes I Am Missing more or less appealing to you. :cheeky:

That explains why the art seemed so familiar to me. He draws some mean angular face features.
Also why i got a kind of sleazy vibe from the art style despite the complete lack of fanservice, i guess.

Frankly, I can't remember the urolagnia (Wikipedia to the rescue on that term as well)...

What made me remember it is the distinctive art style which I quite liked. I saw it in the panels posted and then worked out what the other manga by him I had come across. Thinking about it I did also like the pretty diverse cast. You have several disabled characters (well, implausible for size of cast even) who all take a good share of the heroism which I appreciated. It would also say less fan-servicy than High School of the Dead.

That said, most definitely not an all time classic. I wouldn't have mentioned it in this thread without "I am missing" being mentioned.

Woah, that's a pretty big wall of spoilered speculation! Lemme give my own take. (If I don't address a point, assume that I didn't have anything interesting to say about it.)

You're completely right that he completely missed the point on this leap and didn't really look for the cause.
I don't really think that he's rerun this all before. He seemed to be recalling things in the moment that he'd forgotten before. Yes, memory can be unreliable and all that, but I'm not sure it's going that direction.
There's definitely something odd going on with Kayo. I kinda suspected she might be a time traveller, too. But she doesn't seem to be making efforts to change anything, so I don't know why she would've time travelled. Maybe there's something else going on with her to explain the oddity.
I dunno about Ken'ya. He does seem like a pretty mature kid, but there isn't the degree of oddness associated with him that there was with Kayo.
I did notice the teacher's facial similarity... But I'm not sure how much there's to that. "Sketchy" is an awfully vague description. Also, I can't think of any reason for Satoru's mother to have a negative reaction to his face like she did to the kidnapper's face. That's definitely significant.
As for Yuuki, the lolicon porn is definitely suspicious, but it might've been presented as a red herring that explains why the police settled on Yuuki and didn't really look for another culprit. It's not like Japan has a shortage of lolicons.
Hitomi was specifically noted as feminine looking for a boy. That might explain it. Plus, two out of three being ten years old honestly isn't a very large sample size to draw patterns from.
The third girl: actually, two apparently unrelated out of four known victims or would-be victims (remember the attempted kidnapping Satoru's mother foiled) and Satoru himself at that time notes the kidnapper's likely done this with who knows how many kids.
Interesting speculation about Katagiri. Not sure what else to say about it. I think we might need to see more.
Yeah, I think a more thorough perusal of the anthology might provide enlightening (and honestly Satoru's kinda assuming when he thinks Ken'ya was referring to one of two specific entries).
I feel like there're some very important pieces we're missing here, in part because of Satoru's very narrow focus on saving Kayo without addressing the underlying issue of "there's a guy kidnapping kids".

Hopefully this is the right thread!
I'm a Manga newbie, but was recently fixed by a post in the Convince someone to read a manga with one image! thread.
In this thread I discovered I am a Hero. So obviously I got hooked! It's an amazing Manga with a huge twist a few chapters in. I've read all the available chapters up to ch-130 on mangafox.me.
But now there a no new chapters!! The last chapter was translated in May. Is this normal? New Raws are posted all the time, but I don't read japanese.
Should I give up hope for new chapters or is it normal for translators to take a pause from translating?
I'm so hooked on this manga, I would even be ready to pay for new translations!! :dance:

Tankobons generally have better printing quality (which translates into better scans) and often have extras that weren't in the magazines. Plus I've actually seen an instance of the art getting touched up from the magazine edition to the tankobon edition, though that doesn't seem necessarily that common? Plus in some cases they can be easier to get than all the magazines a work appears in.

So, yeah, some scanlators work exclusively from tankobons.

Tankoubon is just the fancy Japanese word for trade paperback. Magazines in Japan are printed on paper that once, long ago, had had aspirations of being toilet paper, so even with intensive editing work you often end up losing details of the original art. Tankoubon are actually printed on passable paper so you have a lot less editing to do, and your end result is better anyway. Buying tanks is also much cheaper than buying every magazine or getting a subscription, for those scanlation groups that want to do their own scans instead of relying on some dude in Japan.

^^ Some mangaka do it all the time, others never bother. Murata Yuusuke in particular is infamous for going back and touching up cuts/panels/scenes he thought he didn't do justice to the first time around. He'll also go even go as far as completely redrawing scenes so that they fit the flow of a volume as opposed to a weekly chapter, or doing the same for scenes that were originally in color so that they look good in black and white.

Most mangaka don't go that far, but most of them do include end-of-volume extras at the very least, along with a few color pages at the front of the volume.

"Long ago had aspirations of being toilet paper" sounds about right for magazine quality paper. Really, they're made to be disposable, while tankoubon're made to be colllected. In general, it all depends on scanlator priorities. Some of them go for quick releases while others focus on quality above all. Many fall somewhere in the middle. The more popular stuff tends to get the rapid-fire releases while those working on more obscure titles often go at their own paces.
