Jesus. That was so good, I can't believe it. I wound up binging the whole thing over the last few days, made for great work-readin'. It pretty much never slowed down and was incredibly brutal the entire time with a tinge of melancholy most of the way through it. My biggest criticism was the introduction of multiple characters, including the girl in the very first chapter, who show up in maybe half a dozen chapters each throughout the entire 162 chapter run.

I had got somewhat of a Qualia the Purple vibe from parts of it, though political stuff rather than quantum physics stuff(not to mention Akumetsu himself). I don't know if I liked the ending, it really felt like one of those forced-bittersweet endings for the sake of it and also pretty goddamn cheesy but maybe that's just my feeling immediately after finishing it. The last twenty or so chapters were balls-to-the-wall intense.

My favorite parts were probably the Akumetsu rock band, how much of an obvious Countach fanboy the author is, and the flashback story. That one was surprisingly well-handled for what it was. Also made the return to the present way more jaw-dropping.

That's a must-read series and yet another one that I can't believe has never been licensed. While it deals with a lot of Japanese politics and mindsets, it handles them in such a way that even the scanlations were able to easily convey what was going on.

Never try reading Wolf Guy, then. It is so incredibly lovely that it makes Akumetsu look worse by retrospect.

The mystery then becomes "why did anyone want to remake it."

That is why it can make Akumetsu seem retroactively worse if you read it. That they chose to remake an obscure comic about torture and rape says a lot about the writer and artist, which in turn says a lot about the events in Akumetsu.

It kind of stopped being funny while veering toward mild body horror, but no one acknowledged the change. Everyone reacted to grotesque physical transformations and warping reality as though they were interchangeable with the reactions from the early chapters (which were limited to some dude acting silly). They never really made it clear why anyone would ever want to eat bread that would transform you into a lovely pun/hideous freak.

According to the latest chapter, there have been a bunch of psychics in that town but their powers always turn against them. So, he may or may not be the arsonist but he is certainly a pyrokinetic.

I'm curious about mangas set outside Japan or featuring non-Japanese characters prominently. Is there a manga with a black protagonist, for instance? I really enjoyed the continental European setting of Monster/the globetrotting in Master Keaton.

The only thing that has changed is that the new batch of one-dimensional villains are more blatant with their atrocities. Neither the scope nor the degree of their comically evil deeds surpasses the crap from earlier in the manga. I guess that is probably intentional, as the PM's son lacks even the tiny amount of subtlety and guile the PM has.

So I just started reading a lot of stuff I think you would classify as Seinen? For Urasawa I've finished Pluto and have the first three volumes of 20th Century Boys. From Tezuka I've got Dororo, Apollo's song, the first volume of Buddha(haven't read it yet), and I've read the first 4 or 5 of Black Jack. I'm not sure if these would be classified as Shonen or not but I've also got all of the Shigeru Mizuki books that Drawn and Quarterly put out, and have really enjoyed Showa: History of Japan and Onwards Toward Our Noble Deaths. I also picked up the first two volumes of Keiji Nakazawa's Barefoot Gen. I've been really enjoying reading about WW2 era Japan from the Japanese perspective. Do you guys have any recommendations of other manga based on that subject? Is this even the right thread?

Politicians suck. Always have, always will. Akumetsu was a violent power fantasy in which those lovely politicians got what was coming to them in a way that will never happen in reality. The story was secondary to this central premise.

Baki is one of the most beautifully drawn manga on the market. Just admit it... You aren't comfortable reading a manga featuring extremely jacked nude men.

I like inuyashiki because it is following up on the sadly underutilized 'virtuous old man gets super powers' concept from gantz. Like, whenever the old man got an appearance in gantz it always seemed like he would have been a way better protagonist than weepy douchebag kurono.

Stand alone complex is better than anything Shirow has ever written. Dude created a neat setting but he is kind of terrible even outside of his proclivity for drawing greasy horse porn. Appleseed was finished, as it was only ever a very short series. The manga is probably better than all of those incoherent cg films, but it is still merely okay.
