After nearly a year, March comes in like a Lion vol. 13 is finally out/available :bubblewoop:

Highlights include: Hayashida/Akari/Shimada love triangle, Nikaidou being badass, the Grim Reaper getting a little mini-arc, and what I can only imagine is a lead in to a proper Kyouko arc. The last one there has me pretty excited.

I got to the part with the disfigured boy and dropped it because IMO it was treading into misery porn territory that I have no need of in my life at this point.

I got into Immortal and it's pretty good, I think calling it tragedy porn is unfair short of like evil chick randomly coming back as a super ninja. He's immortal and everyone around him isn't so yeah people are gonna die. Oddly enough I couldn't really get into Koe No Kotachi at all
I think it's the author in general for me because I petered out on KnK as well; I couldn't tell you where though, as it's been too long and I've never felt compelled to revisit it.

Didn't see an active manga request thread so asking here: Looking for some completed series to binge through. Generally prefer drama stuff to action stuff as long as there's not some soul crushingly depressing ending. Recently read Pluto and Billy Bat, which I liked, and Spirit Circle, which I loved (have also read most other stuff by each of those authors). Have also read I think most of the stuff on the wiki's recommendation list.
Keeping it seinen, March comes in like a Lion (which obviously has a currently airing anime which is also great) and maybe Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha if you're up for a drama with a romance-heavy focus as well.

But yeah please also check out Kakukaku because god drat what a thing that was.

I think Attack on Titan is fine and ultimately not worth the massive attention it seems to get from both sides, positive and negative. I consider it a decent fairly dark war shounen story that I am into enough that I'll read it to the end but also would not be terribly upset if it suddenly got dropped from CR altogether.

I don't know how much of this was a time/place thing (since I read it while I was in college) but the original 9 volume run of Genshiken is such a great, self-contained story. It didn't need a sequel or follow up of any sort. But at this point any perceived fond feelings I have for it have been washed away with everything that has followed. It's too bad.

It was a series that was flawed in ways I think it could've avoided but it was certainly interesting in most of the right ways and I like how it ended in general.

Has there been updates with regards to March Lion? Volume 13 came out last year around this time, and it's usually one volume a year, but as far as I can tell that's still the latest. Did it take a bit of a break/hiatus?

FGO is the only mobage I bother with because while there is a lot of horseshit wrt its gacha and general grind, it does have a genuinely engrossing story (eventually). It's certainly one I'd recommend to any fan of the original VN.

I remember, overall, thinking the manga was better for a variety of reasons (a lot of the anime is original, and their take on some of the Gung-Ho Guns were a lot less interesting IMO) but my enduring memory of it is also that it is almost indecipherable during any of the action sequences.

Huh, this was a bit of a surprise, it looks like the group who scanlates March Lion released one for the next chapter in the magazine: 154

I don't know if it's a one-off or the new normal going forward (previously they would wait until the tankobon was released).

Yeah I've never read Genshiken admittedly, but it just sounds like relationship drama to me. Granted because of the former I lost track of the names several times across that summary.
The initial 9 volume run, which finished pretty strong all told and wasn't exactly a story that really needed to be revisited at least at the time, was a fairly chill story about a bunch of college nerds meeting/bonding/growing up together. It by no means was without its share of drama but it was balanced a lot better than most of the subsequent additions/alternatives IMO. I dunno maybe it's just because I was reading it as it was coming out in that first run while going through the same basic scenario (meeting a lot of friends in clubs in college) but it was a very relatable story and the cast was pretty likeable and one you wanted to see get through their stuff, and what followed (I never read much of Spotted Flower, just the direct sequel) seemed to never get that initial warmth back.

Looks like the next 3-Gatsu arc is more Shogi, which is always fine but I really like the way this one in particular is going through Rei's mindset, and especially how you can contrast with where he was at the start of the series and how much happier and healthier he seems to be.

My exposure to it has only been the old forum LPs of Tsukihime and 2/3rds of the forum LP of Fate/Stay Night, and the OVAs of Garden of Sinners. I didn't really have the stomach or the interest to get any further into it, especially as the rest of the franchise seems to have gone on into a billion recursive versions of F/SN.

IMO the Fate* stuff has always been an odd mix of weirdly good and creative horror/fantasy, and horrible fetish garbage. Bizarrely, in some cases the horribleness of the fetish stuff actually contributes to giving the horror more of an edge. It makes it annoyingly hard to recommend to anyone, because even though the strong bits are very strong, every entry in it comes with a bunch of content disclaimers. Tsukihime is a really interesting first-person horror story about a person slowly going completely insane under the pressure of morbid psychic powers, gaslighting, and being hunted by a delusional vampire, but it's also got the sexual politics and explicit content of a 90's indie Japanese dating game. And so on and so on. The Garden of Sinners OVAs are the most innocuous entry, and even then those come with, "but one minor character is a sister with a completely unrequited crush on her brother, played for comedy".
It's a fantasy action story with some parts that work and some parts that don't, it's not really that complicated of a recommendation or requires more hand wringing than say, recommending Attack on Titan or whatever else action epic is popular at the time. People should have more faith in others being able to figure out if something like that is going to be for them or not.

Fate/Zero being brought up as "oh no, that's the one that got it mostly right" is always funny to me when it's the most misogynistic Fate story by a healthy margin.

The joke towards of the end of Rentaro having a DJ persona/skit prepared to help out that he never got around to using was very good.
The follow up joke of the delinquents not having actual cigarettes the entire time but being so impressed by Chiyo's iinchou-powers that they copied her was even better.

It's good.
