If I had to guess the outcome, Erina's dish will be superior in quality, but lose because the tools needed for molecular gastronomy are wrong for the context of bento-making; regular kitchens don't have centrifuges.

I doubt that would be the deciding factor. Bento can still be processed by a company to sell in markets so the idea of regular kitchens being the closing deal is a bit restrictive. Plus we wouldn't have gotten this page if Souma wasn't about to do something that will directly win the battle for him.

Also I literally started laughing at that page, it's actually loving happening

Kind of a weird thing to praise, but I love how 'clean' the art I. This is. There's no shortcuts or half colored pages, people have basically okay shape to them.. I M honestly.not sure what it is, but reading this manga it feels a lot 'neater' in the art.

Uh, not really? Or at least I fail to see how drawing hentai specifically makes you a better artist compared to, say, drawing food.

He does have a real good eye for characters, though. A lot of other manga artists fall into the trap of having everyone look the same except for their hair, but even after passing three dozen characters they're still all very easy to tell apart simply by looking at their faces, they all have unique shapes and features to keep everyone distinct, even when exaggerated like they so often are.

I guess the reasoning is that the artist was good enough to rise out of the doujinshi scene and into actual work?

You meant Alice, not Erina.

I was wary about the pacing for this part, but it looks like they're moving it along pretty quickly. One chapter for Alice's dish, another for Souma, and then the verdict, I'm guessing.

I forget if this is a series that telegraphs the winner in presentation order or not. Yakitate Japan did is and Hell's Kitchen does it, but I don't remember if this one did it.

I think it mixes it up, most recently Souma went after Hayama and still lost by a point (or at least eked out a "draw" with the judges.)

Hentai doujins are trashy, the mangaka used to draw them before drawing this. Imagine if he said "that's the caliber of work you can get from someone who moved up from writing shipper fanfic" about an author

I wasn't joking actually :ssh:

For what it's worth, I don' actually know if working on doujinshi was the extent of his work before getting into Jump. He may have been doing it on the side while also being an assistant. The writing for most ero-doujins is pretty trashy though, but the art can meet the levels of published mangaka depending on the artist.

He was publishing ero-manga at a monthly pace for a decent stretch of time too which meant that he was good enough at art to get at that level and was able to meet schedules solo.

Man they chose the wrong chapter to use as the preview in Jump Alpha (Chapter 2).

Then again, given their want to arse the UK off with the Digital GNs anyway (Oh they love to spam your inbox with "BUY ONE PUNCH MAN!" but fun if you can actually do that) I suppose it doesn't really matter. :sigh:

Huh. I didn't know they scheduled ero-manga at all, I figured it was all done on the convention circuit with occasional selling to some magazines. Your argument is valid.

Doujinshi implies/is defined by self publishing, while ero manga is pretty much just the porn version of the manga business. Ero manga is collected in phone books/magazines by publishers, just as Jump and Sunday are, and released on a monthly schedule.

Due to the nature of the business, there isn't exactly a lot of serialized story in these phone books, so a lot of these artists aren't on a strict month-by-month schedule - they'll usually run 3 or 4 times every 6 months if they're popular, and maybe once or twice a year for the up-and-coming names.

I actually like Alice and Soma's dynamic. There's no tsundere nonsense like with Erina; it's just two people who kind of like and respect each other. Cool, but relaxed and not unfriendly.

Penalised, maybe, but it would be such a lame way of losing that I reckon Soma would almost have to request a rematch.

Yeah, I find that the tsundere stuff with Erina is rather rubbish and a disservice to her as a character. It's kind of funny how she's sort of coined as one of the main characters, but Tadokoro has way more screen time and character development compared to Erina.

Alice and Soma are cool, they respect each other as cooks and are eager to see what the other has up their sleeves.

I kind of laughed when the translation (and presumably the original text) used the french word for juice. It's just juice!

Anyways that looked pretty good, but I dunno it seems kind of overly fancy. Admittedly they pointed out that bento can be really fancy now, but I expect Souma to go for the full traditional spirit. And I'll probably like that more.

At the start, I'm sure, Erina was planned to be more involved, but she's been written to be a loner and placed on such a high pedestal that Souma barely interacts with her at all. They've mostly been just randomly bumping into each other, compared to everybody in the Polar Star dorms hanging out all the time, it's no wonder Tadokoro gets more development.

Erina will get more time when something happens that directly involves her, say, deciding to elect a new member of the Elite 10 or however they pick new members.

Souma's got this one in the bag. It's seems pretty typical for people in this manga to really stick to the one thing they're good at(fancy meat, molecular gastronomy/presentation, etc.) and then lose to Souma who tries really hard to stick to the theme and then go above and beyond with it. Though I guess it's not really a surprise that the protagonist wins in a shounen comic.
I'm looking forward to the next time Alice shows up after this, if she does, because I wonder what she's advance into. Molecular gastronomy is kinda seen as a gimmicky fad so I wonder if she'll get past that or just get really good at making weird foams.

BlitzBlast

Well it makes sense. Most of the students have their specialties, so of course they approach any problems with the stuff they're most familiar with. Souma on the other hand comes from a special-of-the-day diner, where it's all about making something new that both fits the theme and satisfies the customer.

I think the closest competitor in terms of scope would probably be Erina, if only because "gourmet food" is really broad.

KittyEmpress

Jam Buddies

Souma, Mikumi, and sorta Erina are all unique as far as the series is concerned, especially the former two.

Souma's food style is literally a home town restaurant that attracted customers by having changing specials, meaning he has a very wide talent. Mikumi's food style is 'home cooking' - she cooks with ingredients and a style meant to soothe, and can cover a very broad range when she's confident.

Erina, as far as we've seen, has a less broad specialty, but still a very broad one - she believes in gourmet food, and making all her food be wonderful and gourmet and beautiful. It's the opposite of souma and Mikumi - Souma never learned to cook a gourmet dish. He learned how to cook dozens (hundreds) of different dishes that tasted good despite being 'low class' food. Mikumi doesn't care about whether her food is beautiful or made to be high class - she cares about whether her food will make people happy.

Honestly, I could totally see this manga as a slightly less shounen series with Mikumi as the main character, keeping Erina as the rival, which amuses me.

I second this, Souma will take a narrow win because his dish is more fitting of the bentou theme. That, or the rice is really drat spectacular which might be the case, considering the implications on the last page.
He stands to gain a lot of respect from 'certain' characters if he wins this one and Erina might stop being such a bitch once her genius cousin loses to him. We know he isn't made of plot armour after the Shokugeki against the teacher so it's not impossible for him to lose here.

The candy he had with Sakaki is still a Chekov's gun waiting to be used. Obviously he put candy in the rice and it'll ruin the great meal they just had so the judges will vote in favor of Alice because Soma can't not try gross combinations even when an important competition is on the line.
