When I was listening years ago, Adam was obsessed with the Albert Brooks film "Defending Your Life", and called it a comedy masterpiece. I got around to watching it and it was fine for an early 1990s film but nothing special. Albert Brooks and Meryl Streep are likeable and some jokes are alright (although it has that odd early 1990s Japanese panic), but overall forgettable.

I dunno why Adam would be obsessed by it, the plot is predictable and there must be a hundred better comedies.

I used to be a mega fan until maybe 2012. I remember a turning point was a bizarre feud with Kevin Smith where they rambled for two hours about nothing and I was baffled by what was going on. No jokes, and Smith seemed confused about why Adam was mad. Around that time I switched to Comedy Bang Bang and the land of not awful hosts.

And I just learned there's a Carollapedia. It appears to be quite hostile to Alison Rosen and Donny. http://dimeforscale.com/wiki/index.php?title=Alison_Rosen

I stopped listening when he had a weird “feud” with Kevin Smith and so they brought in Smith to tell his side, but there was nothing to it and Smith was trying to be nice and confused about what Adam was upset about. It was about two hours of nothing, no jokes or anything and I gave up and switched to Comedy Bang Bang.

Dunno if it’s been posted in the thread but the old episodes when Adam would yell at Donny culminated in Donnie suing and getting a big payout https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr-esq/adam-carolla-settles-lawsuit-popular-731537

Anyone ever get on the air? Maybe 7 years ago they put out a call for hobo power stories and I called twice, didn’t get through, tried one more time and got through to Donny. I handed the phone to a friend who had worked at a sewage plant and had a disgusting story about clearing a blockage and got to tell it on air to Adam.

Still bizarre how he went from run down apartment living with his truck getting regularly stolen to non-ironically docking his gardner’s pay for not closing a gate or ranting about his maid not cleaning the microwave properly.

Oh for sure, back when I was a fan I bought one of his audiobooks and was like "aw yeah, gonna get hours of original Aceman content" and it was word for word his rants and stories from the podcast. I turned it off after a few hours as I could already recite the stories.

Agreed with other posters that he can be very funny but needs oversight and pushback from someone like Teresa. It's also interesting to think back on episodes from like 2011 where there were signs of trouble ahead. Like on one he got in an argument with Donny about microphone placement and at first it seemed like two friends razzing each other, but it didn't stop and Adam was really mad after like 10 minutes the guest clearly wanted to leave, definite sign of an abusive boss and what the heck was going on behind closed doors if that rant was making the air.

That probably close to what happened back in 2014 with Donny.

quote:

Misraje, his wife, Kathee, and his cousin Sandy Ganz, sued in January 2013, claiming that a partnership agreement entitled them to a big stake in the show’s profits. Misraje alone wanted 30 percent, and contrary to some news reports that Carolla’s podcast business didn’t make much money, the plaintiff asserted that it raked in $14 million...

...After a week of testimony, the trial was headed into the final stretches with Misraje just about to bring forward his expert witness who would talk about Carolla’s profits. The judge limited much of the witness’ forthcoming discussion about revenue up to 2012 and a valuation of the business at that point.

Then, a break happened, Misraje’s lawyer Gregory Doll conferred with Carolla’s Mark Geragos, and the two were able to come to an agreement to put the case to bed. No terms have been disclosed, although Doll says he’s happy with the arrangement. The settlement cuts short the trial, which was likely to conclude by the end of the week.

I remember how his complaints about Donny started out fun and it felt like he was in on it, like Conan and La Bamba. Then the reason for his anger got less goofy and one time he spent like 15 minutes mad about where a microphone was placed during an interview and Donny argued back and it felt weird how the exchange wasn’t funny and the guest got uncomfortable. Culminating in Donny successfully suing for a good chunk of change for profits he was promised but never got.

I remember him bragging about outsmarting the need to get up in the middle of the night with babies if you’re paying a nanny to nap in a chair outside their room, and thinking that was a good idea. Then I had a kid & yes babies need attention but it’s also critical bonding time & getting adjusted to a new mindset of being responsible for the kid & getting to know them.
