I'm free feeding my two cats 1/3 cup per bowl of Before Grain Chicken, down from 2/3 (1/3 2x) after they started getting tubby.
Should I be supplementing in the evening with a canned option and reducing to maybe a 1/4 cup AM free feed or moving up to one of the better dry brands?

They have a cat fountain and one will always drink if i turn the faucet on.

Right now they're maybe a 6-7 on the kitty scale.

Petco has stopped carrying Before Grain in favor of Purrfect Bistro.

If the cats don't care, is there that much of a nutritional difference to seek out the Before grain?

Iams is on the acceptable dog food list, and is reasonably cost effective @ Sams club. $50 for 45Lbs vs $50 for 25-30lbs of Merrick.

Do the same standards apply to dog food as in the cat food? (I have 2 cats and they get merrick before grain/bistro selects)IE: the higher the quality of the food the smaller the serving size becomes so that both bags would roughly last the same time for a single dog?

Just to toss in my $0.02, I've been feeding Merrick to both the cats and the dog, and both are quite happy and have kick rear end coats.
