I think Sheila was always destined to be a #2: it's been clear for a while now that she has everything needed to make a great villain except for the actual passionate desire to be one. She's incredible in that role, but as a lead antagonist she fumbled, probably because she wasn't actually that invested in doing it.

She probably could have done well as #2 to a hero, though, as long as the hero had the same kind of passion for justice that the Monarch does for vengeance.

I don't know if there's anybody in Venture Brothers like that, although I guess it's fun to imagine Sheila working for Dr. Orpheus and turning him into a really great necromancer.

Colonel Hunter Gathers? Not for justice, but he has plenty of passion for his side of the game. I bet she could be satisfied as an adjutant to him. Her old Jackie O costume is practically on theme. Alternatively, she could dress as like a 1940's "government girl" style of secretary working in the defense department

Exploration is ill-advised.
Thing is with Sheila is that she's an excellent planner and administrator, she does well executing but not so much coming up with goals of her own. She makes an excellent councilwoman specifically because it's a role with both prestige and responsibilities.

She's more Soundwave than Starscream or Megatron, put it that way.

this glorious monument

It makes since that Sheila would love Monarch for his passion since it's the only thing she lacks. He completes her. That's why she broke it off with Phantom Limb twice. He's too pragmatic. She was like a nuclear scientist without a demon core.

Phantom Limb is also a funny one since he actually seems pretty mollified now he's got the power he craved and gotten his attitude checked. He's got the right kind of slimy manners and pretentiousness that goes well with it.

No, see, it's okay because Doc never actually got laid (though White did get a BJ under the DJ console), and they were all secretly assassins so that makes the non-consensuality of it okay!

(does some more cognitively dissonanced backflips to complete the ensemble of illogical justification)

Also, given how readily his mind went to using untested aphrodisiacs on "escorts" whom he didn't want to pay for "full service" (or even "half service") you just know it's not the *first* time Rusty's drugged a woman to get laid.

Billy's the moral compass on that show. His mother might be a helicopter mom, but she's the most stable parent of the old guard.

Utility is seven-eighths Proximity.

It occurs to me that Jonas Venture's DNA might be hosed up.
Consider this list of Venture children and their "defects" (for the purpose of this list, I'm assuming that both Quizboy and Qymn are actually children of Jonas, which imo is implied but never stated).

  • Rusty - nothing apart from the whole consuming his twin thing (see next).
  • Jonas Jnr - Parasitic twin, Dwarfism
  • Dr. Qymnn - Epilepsy (which can have a genetic link)
  • Billy Quizboy - Hydrocephalus, Dwarfism
  • Malcolm - nothing apart from the addition of baboon DNA

That's not a great batting average for a hyper virile narcissist who would see any minor flaw as a reflection on himself (to be clear; none of the things I've listed have stopped those people from living their lives and finding some degree of success, but I'm sure that Jonas wouldn't see it that way)

It's okay for protagonists to not be great or even good people. It makes one feel better about oneself and one's many, massive shortcomings.

When is Billy implied to be the child of Jonas?

I'm not so sure about Dr. Quymn, I kind of doubt it actually. I think Colonel Gentlemen would know about his step-daughter's parentage, and I think he would have warned her and Rusty . "That's for breaking my step-daughter's heart!" takes on a much weirder meaning

Billy isn't ever implied to be, but it's a popular fan theory that every redhead anywhere close in age to Rusty is a secret lovechild of Jonas.

The Purple Pete Rose “And more people of color!” joke is one of the few times i’ve actually spit my drink out laughing when I first saw it. In the long, long list of S-tier jokes in the show it’s relatively mid but just so well delivered and out of nowhere.

Jet Age and everything I wouldn't be surprised if between his insane mad science adventures and the cavalier attitude around radiation, smoking, diet pills etc Jonas had hosed up his own body pretty bad in a lifetime of careless adventure.

I think SPHINX rising gets kinda overshadowed by OSI Love You but it has some great moments:
  • Gary singing the SPHINX theme while he hijacks the truck
  • Shore Leave yelling "That's so Raven" when Gary blows their cover
  • "It makes me feel like a wookie"
  • 420 friendly (but only in off time)
  • SPHINX Commander just shrieking everything
  • Tim Meadows' whole bit
  • The beaver inspector plot
  • Hank forgetting he's wearing a strength suit
