Not sure if this is really the right place to ask this, but are there any portable printers available that'll work with iPads yet? The sales guys in my company are currently using decrepit old netbooks and old portable printers when out on the road and needing to print sales invoices. Management are pushing to move them onto iPads but they still need the ability to print stuff out - but I can't find anything portable that they can take out on the road that is AirPrint compatible.

The technology is there. I have a Polaroid portable Bluetooth printer that natively works with iPad. It prints your photos on little wallet-sized photo paper.

Now, has anyone actually made a fullsize, portable 8.5"x11" printer? No loving idea. But I wouldn't give up the search quite yet.

All I can think of is making up some clunky setup unless you can find a portable printer with AirPrint. Like this AirPrint server + some wifi LAN setup (perhaps the iPad itself if they're cellular models with tethering?) + whatever portable printer compatible with the AirPrint server. The issue is if they have to be fully portable cause then you'd need a battery, but if the printers need an outlet to begin with it wouldn't be too horrible. I'd probably get a small power strip and make some self contained zip tied contraption with the wifi and print server so it'd end up like another little brick to carry.

Anyone got any ideas how animated gifs are slow as hell and choppy, even when fully loaded, on my brand new 4th gen iPad, while they work just fine on my old iPhone 4?

Gross!
I'd really like to know that as well. Chrome and Safari absolutely poo poo the bed as soon as gif's come into play. Meanwhile, my Nexus 4 chugs along quite nicely (don't want to start an Android / iOS derail). It's really strange as it'll play 1080p mkv's without a hitch.

When/if the new iPad 5's come out I'm planning on buying one and giving my old iPad 2 to my sister and her family(3 children). Good guy move or should I just sell it?

iPad 2 is still a very nice iPad, it's going to get iOS 7 support and its still a fast tablet, it doesn't turn to poo poo just because the iPad 5 is out, give it to your sister if she doesn't have one I say.

On that note, what are the most popular (and likely) rumors about the new line of iPads? I have an iPad 2 (that really is working perfectly fine for everything, except for low space) and looking to get another one either to give to the kids to use or for myself and give them the iPad 2. Or, pick up a cheap 3 or 4 after the 5 is released.

I totally know that Apple rumors are the worst rumors, just curious to hear what is out there.

There will be a new iPad and it will look more like the iPad mini potentially including thinner bezels. Also it will be faster.

Lighter, thinner bezels like in the iPad mini and a new faster processor are what pretty much everyone's expecting.

There are some crazy rumors like Apple is going to make it waterproof and poo poo like that.

No one knows for sure when it will come out but the current back to school promotion runs through September 6th, so they probably won't release anything new before then.

And the iPad mini might get a retina display. Or might not, it depends which rumor you read on which day.

Good guy move. My kid has an iPad 2 and it does everything we ask of it. It irritates me it's the only device left in the house with a 30 pin connector, but that's such a minor issue I feel silly even typing it out.

Thanks for all the responses. That's basically what I thought. If its nothing revolutionary I will likely just pick them up a first gen mini on the cheap. My iPad 2 is plugging away just fine. Xcom runs terrific :)

I'm not going to lie. I have thought about replacing my iPad 3 with the next new one just because of the 30-pin connector. I am an idiot.

I'm just eager to have a lighter and smaller tablet. Since getting a Galaxy Nexus last year I've largely stopped carrying my iPad 3 around, given that the phone does most of what I need without the bulk. I'm tempted to switch to an iPad mini, but there are times when that big screen is alluring. On the other hand, going to a Mini would let me pick a model with more storage...

I think about doing this on an almost weekly basis whenever my iPad starts running low on battery while I'm on a job site and I only have a lightning cable for my 5.

You know, I don't even look at animated GIFs that much, but the poor performance of GIFs on iOS is baffling. Sometimes they work just fine. Sometimes they don't. Why? I don't have any loving clue, and sometimes I wonder if Apple's devs have a clue.

Must be some programming issue, the Tumblr app used to choke to death on gifs, and now it works just fine. Actually I think the Awful app ground to a halt on pages with lots of gifs too, and now it works fine, maybe ask them.

Not a single one of any of the gifs I come across manage to stutter or blink their way to "fine" territory.

It gets so bad that on a page with a lot of gifs that my keyboard starts lagging seconds behind what I'm typing as well. I'm scared that it's contagious and if I stay on a lovely gif page too long, I'm going to start strobe lighting around the place irl as well.

Are we talking about Safari, or a specific app? Safari is very random with gifs to me.

How is your WLAN connection? Safari tries to play the GIF as soon as the first frames are available. For large GIFs with large keyframes this can mean a lot of stuttering if the connection can not keep up with the frame size. Do GIFs play smooth once they are fully loaded (as in the first repeat)?

There were a lot of issues with GIFs in the early iOS days. But that is long in the past.

I don't think I've ever had one run at full speed on my iPad 3, or 2 or 1 before that... I have no idea how they run on my iPhones, I don't really browse images on my phone much. But go to a tumblr page with gifs and my iPad has always poo poo the bed. Hell, just one animated gif alone on a page wont run at full speed. It's possible they work fine now on an iPad 4, I have no idea. But they sure as poo poo do not on an iPad 3. Being as this has always been a problem for me and I've heard lots of people say the same I doubt it's just me. It kinda drives me nuts. OSX use to have huge issues with animated gifs too. I've concluded Apple hates animated gifs and wants to punish anyone who looks at them.

That's the thing, gifs don't play smoothly once they're fully loaded. The stuttering goes on forever. It's even more frustrating when the exact same gifs run fine on my iPhone 4 and my connection is 100mb so that sure isn't the issue.

I had the exact same experience. IPad Mini with iPhone 4. Ran great on the iPhone, and more often than not wouldn't even play on my iPad. Same problem now, too - great on my Note 2, runs like rear end on my iPad 3.

Maybe something to do with effective resolution? Who knows. Minor thing for me - iPad is there for games, Facebook and GarageBand.

Thanks yeah I think it will be beneficial for their family. Can't imagine what life would have been like growing up with an iPad.

I did this. My girlfriend wanted an iPad anyways so I gave her my 3 and picked up the 4. It is quite a bit faster than the 3rd gen and its nice having everything use the same connector again.

Probably not the smartest thing though.

I have a mini and gave my 3 to my gf, but I want a 5 because the RAM on the mini annoys me and I want a bigger screen again. I hope the new 5 is lighter than the 3/4 though, that thing is a beast compared to the mini.

I went from the Mini to a 3 and the weight doesn't bother me. Usually curl up on the couch and play Peggle, though, which the Mini was a bit too small for.

As much as I love my mini, using a 3 this past weekend had my Apple purchase sense tingling in anticipation of the 5. The full size really is optimal in a lot of ways. Typing, for one.

The weight is pretty much irrelevant to me. I only use my iPad 3 on my desk, lap, balanced against my chest in bed, or holding it on the arm of the couch. (also almost exclusively in landscape mode with my Smart Cover a stand) I'd only care about weight if it somehow got into "awkward to carry in a bag" weights like a big laptop, which would be pretty unlikely.

Fun Shoe
The other thing with a bigger iPad would be the structural stiffness. Making a thing longer makes it easire to bend. Making it that much bigger would require it to also be thicker, or for it to be made with a frame/body somehow stiffer than the current one (which would also add weight). If they just scale up the current design then it would have to get proportionally heavier, or else be made of unobtanium.

Exactly. If there's going to be change in the size, it'll be horizontally to give a widescreen resolution, not a diagonal extension. The iPhone 5 jump to 16:9 is still having its effects on the app ecosystem nearly a year on, as did the Retina upgrade before it. I actually appreciate that; even with iOS 7 changing design, there's no serious unwarranted change in functionality or your muscle memory, whereas Android phones are too often bloated with manufacturer customization/bloatware (as evidence by my mother taking several days to acclimatise from a HTC Wildfire to a Galaxy S III; thank God she didn't go for the Galaxy Note).
