Got a quick question - I have a prepaid Verizon iPad 2, and want to jump to a prepaid Verizon iPad 4. Has anyone here done a similar transition? How difficult is it to move the data plan over? (I am probably going to wait until they release a fifth gen ipad, then I will get a iPad 4 for maybe $100 less.) Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I was told that if you talk to support, the most important thing is to tell them you are prepaid and not a postpaid customer.

Also, I have an existing basic phone postpaid account with Verizon. Is there any benefit to getting a 4G ipad that is postpaid rather than prepaid?

For your first question, I can't imagine it's any more difficult than a SIM swap. I got a Verizon iPad 3 and just swapped in the SIM from my AT&T iPad 2 and it worked flawlessly.

Verizon uses CDMA networks. Most other carriers are GSM, and need SIM cards.

Yeah, Verizon LTE does SIMs. So you're both right, Verizon is CDMA, but their 4G devices use SIMs.

I like the idea of Poetic case I have on my Mini: slim hard case on the back, smartcover-style flip on the front with the magnet to turn on the screen.

Unfortunately, the Poetic is junk and chunks are quickly cracking off the corners. Can anyone recommended something similar, but more durable?

I have a Joymii SmartSuit and it's exactly like you describe and very well made. Nice and grippy covering too.

Edit: ignore me, didn't spot that you were asking for Mini cases

The Joy Factory Smartsuit? The other is apparently a porn site.

That one showed up a lot when I was searching, but most of the reviews were from right after launch. Sounds good, if nothing better has come around since.

Just get a smart cover and one of the many back cases that work with them. Bonus of this approach is being able to take to cover off when you don't need it and it's just getting in the way (aka portrait orientation use).

I have a question about exporting pictures and videos from an iPad 2 to my PC. When I open the iPad in explorer, the DCIM folder says it contains 1796 files and is 7.85 Gb. After I run the "Import pictures and videos" command from the right-click menu, the resulting folder on my PC has only 1095 files and is 4.62 Gb. When I try to manually copy the folders over from the iPad's DCIM folder (highlighting them all, right-click, copy, paste in new folder on my PC desktop) it says that it will take about an hour, but then cuts off after a few minutes. This method only pulls about 900 megs of media.

Something is not doing exactly what I want it to: copy EVERY picture and video saved on the iPad to a folder on my PC desktop. I don't want to use the synch feature, I'm wanting to make a complete hardcopy backup of all of my memories.

Any ideas?

I have no experience with a Mac or ipad besides my iPhone. I'm interested in getting an ipad but I have not the slightest clue which model. I'm learning how to program in Python and would like to practice writing code on my lunch breaks and maybe some school work. Are iPads good for these types of activities? If so could you recommend a model to me?

Do you have an Apple Store near you? It would be best to try out a full size iPad and iPad mini if you're trying to decide between the two. Personally, I recommend getting a full size iPad if you're going to be typing on it a lot. A 32GB wifi model is a good starting point if you don't need mobile Internet.

As for programming on an iPad, I write a lot of HTML and CSS using an app called Textastic, but if you're into Python, you should take a look at Pythonista. I don't write Python or have any experience with Pythonista but it gets good reviews.

Make sure you get a bluetooth keyboard, too. Touchscreen keyboards suck balls for extensive typing like coding requires.

I don't know if there's anything to do here, but I'd like to avoid paying the full out of warranty cost to fix my iPad 3. A one in a million drop dinged my iPad on a hinge on my desk, right above the power button between it and the glass. The glass is fine, but the power button is stuck. I can certainly use it as is, but is there anything I can do to release the pressure on the button, or does anyone do reasonably prices repairs?

My MacBook Air broke and now I'm considering getting an iPad to use as my only computer. I know the iPad can do nearly everything that I did on my Mac but I have a question about photos and managing them. Without a Mac and iTunes to sync with, how can I manage my photos and transfer them from my iPhone to my iPad and visa versa?

On my Mac, I used Pages to write papers and export them to .doc format. Is Pages the only word processor on iPad that I should be using and can it export to .doc?

First answer : use Photostream so you can move pics between devices easily. Dropbox etc work too

Second answer : just get pages

For programming, a MacBook would be way, way nicer.

You can certainly do some programming on the iPad, but the MacBook would give you so many more options. Xcode, for one, which is a really nice piece of software.

If you're set on the iPad, why not wait a couple of months? The new one is likely to be announced on sept 10th.

More like October - the September event seems set to be all about iPhones, maybe some new Macs. I agree with the spirit of your post, otherwise. If you can at all avoid it, do not buy a new iPad yet. You'll regret it when the new models roll out in a few months.

Using iPad as your only computer make sure you make full use of iCloud and use that to move your files between the two devices. You can pretty much tell photostream to do it for you automatically and when you take a shot with your iPhone it will automatically appear on your iPad.

I kind of envy the people who can get away with having an iPad as their only computer. It seems risky to me - after all, cloud services become your ONLY form of backup - but then, if you don't need something with Windows or OS X, chances are the most import content you have is email, photos, music, and some notes.

Pages is pretty solid and can import and export Word files (via e-mail).

However, what might be a deal-breaker for you is that (at least to my knowledge) you cannot insert footnotes on iPad. Hardly ideal for writing academic papers.

I think I should be good as far as writing papers go because I do have access to a desktop computer that I can use in a pinch.

A potential hiccup in the plan is can the iPad upload files to websites? If I wanted to attach my resume to an online application can I do that? If it can't do that maybe it makes more sense to just get a real computer.

Yeah that'd be a problem if there's no alternative ways to submit...the whole file management thing is still an issue on iOS and 7 doesn't appear to address that afaik.

If you click on an upload button for any website I believe it'll prompt you to take a photo or choose an existing one. No other file options than that.

There are non-jailbreak browser apps that can do this, for example iCab Mobile. It doesn't work perfectly though.

I can't decide if the Adonis Jot actually has screen-scratching tendencies. A lot of reviewers complaining about scratches seem to be using soft screen protectors.

Others say things like, "luckily the scratches buffed right out but I returned the stylus anyway," which suggests to me maybe the Jot was just leaving lines in the thick layer of fingerprint grease on their bare screen.

Microcenter has a few Jot Pros in their bin of clearance junk and I thought it might be nice for drawing games. Honest scratch stories?

I have a Jot and have a hard time believing that the plastic disk on the tip could scratch the glass on an ipad unless you have a bunch of silica sand glued to it or something.

Also, I'm pretty sure that anything that can be "buffed right out" of the glass on an iPad wasn't a scratch to start with. Either the reviewer had some lovely plastic screen cover on or else there was some greasy cheeto dust trapped under his stylus tip.

POCKET CHOMP

I have a jot and it definitely caused a bunch of scratches on my screen. I don't use a protector. The scratches aren't huge or like super deep or something, but I can tell you they don't "buff out" as I don't think I've used the jot for a couple of years now and all those jot scratches are still there!

It's not an issue of the plastic disc "causing" the scratch directly. But think about it logically, just from stuff in the air/whatever, from time to time there may be crap that lands on your screen that has the capability to scratch it. But your finger's skin is flexible and not an entirely flat surface, so even if you happen to swipe across the scratch-causing particulate, the chances of your finger itself pressing down on it with enough pressure to drag and keep it pressed against the screen is pretty low. But with the jot, you've got a hard plastic surface evenly applying pressure, so anything "caught" underneath the disc is definitely going for a bit of a high-friction ride around the screen.

Everyone's mileage may vary of course, I know how hard the screen is to scratch, and maybe just because I live in a place with lovely air pollution there's more gross/hard stuff landing on my screen randomly, but I can 100% say it happened to me. Which is a shame, since the jot is probably the best stylus, although another caveat to consider is just how noisy it is, banging a hard plastic thing with a metal back onto glass is a lot noisier than those mushy tipped styluses. The jot definitely beats them in accuracy, though, and it just looks good too.

Yeah, the issue isn't the jot directly, it's particles getting caught between it and the screen.

Don't underestimate the value of size, though. An 8-inch tablet is a lot easier to hold in your hand(s) and stuff into bags.

Oh I'm definite not underestimating it. I still will want to see what's what... but that video made it REALLY look like the size differences were negligible.

Of course, if they did THAT to the iPad... I have to imagine a similar scaling back in size and weight may come for the Mini as well.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I will PROBABLY go with the iPad "maxi" unless there isn't any feature/spec gap between the two. But I imagine there will be. I imagine the full-sized iPad will be better *somehow*.

I haven't had any reason performance problems with either my iPad or iPhone 5 so I'm excited to see if there's any crazy new feature on either new device which might push me over the edge into wanting a new one.
