They're all just wishes. Apple went through a lot of effort to move all of their iOS device launches to September/October, including launching a new iPad 6 months after the previous one.

I don't see why they'd launch any in June this year.

I noticed in the refurbished apple store there are refurb iPad 4s going for as low as $419

The iPad 4 will be supported one year longer than the 3. The 3 was the first generation with the retina display and its hardware struggles a little in certain areas to draw that many pixels.

It's still a great iPad but if you're going to be using it for gaming I'd strongly consider the 4 (or waiting for the 5).

You can move the keyboard around by long pressing and dragging the keyboard button as well. It's possible that you had it moved to a position above the bottom of the screen, and therefore the screen wasn't re-sized. It might even remember different positions on a per app basis, which could explain the inconsistency you're noticing.

It's great even if you just use the web browser and email on the couch honestly. Better than a laptop for those use cases, and that's not even getting into the app store.

As far as spending money on apps goes, you don't have to spend hundreds (although you might be surprised at how many $1 purchases you justify over time) as there are many good free apps and games on the store as well.

There's a physical limit to how many pages can stay loaded in memory, especially if you go off and do other things on your device. There's no quick and easy fix aside from giving them more memory.

It was by far the worst on the iPad 1, I never notice it happening on my iPad 3 but I don't open a ton of tabs either.

The issues with adding RAM are talked about a little in the Anandtech article too. RAM is a constant and consistent power drain -- whether it's in use or not, it's always sucking power. So it's a balance of cost, performance, and battery life. I think this year they moved to the more power efficient LPDDR3 which is more expensive, so that's probably why they opted not to increase capacity.

e: I wouldn't be surprised if next year the top of the line iPhone, iPad Air, and iPad mini all shipped with 2GB of RAM.

Speaking of safari, I can't even open a second tab without it crashing. Just hitting the plus sign sends me back to springboard. I've also found that I can't get past the title menu in Magic 2013 and a few other apps seem to have crash issues.
Anyone else been having issues? Is this just cause the iPad Air has new hardware and things need to be reoptimized? It seems pretty un-apple for then to not have even tested safari on their new tablet.

I don't think that's something everyone is experiencing, that's a pretty glaring bug. Restart the device first if you haven't. Otherwise, I'd try doing a restore, testing safari before and after restoring from your backup.

I think it's stupid to condemn the retina mini for burn in issues when no one has laid eyes on a retina mini and the burn in issues are just a rumor that people here seem to be taking way too seriously.

You take a chance ordering a product day one from any company. Odds are good the majority of retina iPad mini's will be fine, and that apple will replace the ones that aren't.

After comparing the mini and the air in store, I opted for the air since I use my iPad as more of a laptop replacement when I'm out and about and like being able to type on the keyboard in landscape. Holy hell this thing is light compared to my 3rd gen iPad. It's so much easier to hold. If anyone is on the fence about upgrading their 3rd gen iPad I'd say it's definitely worth the upgrade.

The iPad Air is awesome. If you want one, get one. No regrets here. I guess I just don't open a ton of tabs but I never really run into the reloading, and even when I do it's never frustrating.

After a few days of owning my iPad Air, I have absolutely no complaints, except that I can't legally marry it. Seriously it's such an upgrade from an OG iPad. Usually after buying some electronic device I discover some tiny detail that bugs me, but this time - nothing. What an excellent loving piece of tech, highly recommend it. I hated the iPad mini 1st gen if that matters.

Yep, I still can't believe how well they hit it out of the park. I guess my only issue is the 1GB of RAM but honestly that's more of a theoretical issue for me. In practice the performance is so good I just don't care. Love it.

That's what I was going to do but she keeps telling me to get her the mini as she couldn't tell the difference between the 2 displays without her glasses. She usually doesn't wear her glasses while using the Ipad 2 currently.

It's not just the display. The retina mini is around 5x faster than the mini. You'll be able to hold onto it for much longer than the mini before apps and the OS start to outpace it. You can't say the same about the mini.

In my experience they're just as sturdy as the old covers. I don't really use it for the cover so much as a flexible stand that easily stays with the iPad, and for that it's just as good as the old ones were.

In comparison to the old covers the prices are pretty much the same anyway. If you were happy with the old one you'll probably be fine with the new one.

I fold it felt side outwards, and when in that position it seems just as strong as the 4-fold cover.

You can get a replacement more than once. iPhones actually cost more than $200 to replace out of warranty now too – I don't know if that's been changed for iPads though.

I don't know anything about people being escorted out of stores in the UK, but the ruling in Italy was because they didn't clearly differentiate between the government mandated 2 year warranty vs. the warranty provided by buying Applecare in their marketing materials and when trying to make Applecare sales, not because they refused to provide service.

DarkJC
Jul 6, 2010
Yeah, no excuses, that's terrible service. Usually on release day they will swap it out no questions asked, especially since you're in the return period. Can't win them all. I can't even imagine how many people go to them saying their phone doesn't work when it's a problem with their home wifi though.

You should have an option to restore from backup when you connect it to iTunes. Alternatively, restore from an iCloud backup.

Would people say the iPad Retina Mini is worth the extra $100 over the regular Mini? I haven't had a chance to look at the Retina one in person but my sister has a regular Mini and it seems okay for what I want to do (generic web surfing replacement for my laptop).

The Retina Mini is ~5 times faster than the old mini, according to benchmarks. It's worth it for the A7 alone. The A5 is getting long in the tooth.

What happens if you use the system level AirPlay mirroring? Or does that just not work when an app has disallowed AirPlay as well?

I think the build quality is top notch. The iPad Air really feels like Apple showing off what they can do, to be honest. The glass is definitely thinner which I think is a big part of the weight savings. It doesn't seem to negatively impact using the device for me at all though.

DarkJC
Jul 6, 2010
It's definitely glass.

edit: Or at least it seems to behave in the exact same way. I've read reviews saying it's glass too but they could be just assuming. /shrug

I went from an iPad 1 to an an iPad Air. The difference is staggering. Had quite a few crashes on the Air though. Mostly in Chrome but even the Mail app has crashed. Twice now the iPad has even restarted itself. Is this a fairly common thing?

You're probably confusing rebooting with the springboard crashing. When the springboard crashes it pops up an Apple logo just like when turning on the device.

I think there are specific crashes related to the 64-bit hardware in the Air and 5S. I'm hoping iOS 7.1 does away with them once and for all.

DarkJC

That would be indicative of an inherent flaw in those particular sheets of glass, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Apple will replace those screens under warranty even without Applecare+.

That said if you're looking at buying an extended warranty regardless, I'd stick with the Apple official one. It's hard to beat the service at their stores.

An easier way would be for her to share the iCloud document with you, you edit it using the iCloud web app and she edits it using pages on her iPad. I'm pretty sure Pages has the ability to generate a link that will share the document with anyone she sends the link to.

I would do the wipe and restore, then when iTunes asks you to restore or set up as new, just say set up as new. Then do a sync, and see what apps it syncs over and whether they've got your data.

Sometimes the restore process completes but itunes doesn't recognize it. The iPad would still have all your settings though.

I believe iTunes stores app downloads in the iTunes Media folder, which has to be set in preferences. Not sure if you're on windows or OSX, and the path is different depending on which operating system. On Windows it defaults to C:\Users\your_username\My Music\iTunes Media.

One thing I would suggest is turning on iCloud Backup. You can still back up to your computer as well, but having the iCloud backup as a fallback is a nice safety net.

DarkJC

It sucks managing storage, so my rule of thumb is always get the bigger one if you're stuck choosing between two sizes. 32GB will be great and he probably won't have to worry about it. iOS can get frustrating if he constantly keeps it near full and large apps have updates that need completing, or a system update needs more space, etc etc.

DarkJC
Jul 6, 2010
There hasn't really been any indication that they're considering that, no. But, usually the only indication we get is that suddenly that functionality appears in an iOS beta. I wouldn't count on it being added though.

I've actually been having similar problems with my iPad Air. Windows 8.1 sees the iPad just fine, but iTunes refuses to acknowledge it. Since iTunes USED to be able to detect the device, I'm guessing Apple just broke iTunes again, as per usual.

Considering the guy lied to you about the capabilities of the product you probably have a case to get the restocking fee waived. That being said, there are Restrictions you can enable/disable in Settings -> General -> Restrictions. You can also use separate Apple ID's for iCloud, iMessage, and the App Store.

Unfortunately I don't think there's a well supported way of doing that aside from constantly logging out of things. Mail, Contacts, Calendars are all just accounts you set up in settings and cannot be passcoded, so if you don't want someone reading your mail or looking at your calendar then you'd have to disable those each time you hand it off.

Some apps (like banking apps, etc.) have their own capability to be passcoded so they cannot be accessed unless you know the passcode, but that is implemented on a per-app basis.

The restrictions options in Settings really only cover certain things you want disabled on the device, like whether apps can be installed or deleted, and whether the iTunes Store can be used, etc. These can be useful for locking it down if there are certain settings you don't want changed when other people are using the device.
