Was doing the "what's your salary expectation?"/"what's your budget?" dance with a recruiter two weeks back, and then dipped to go on holidays with no internet access. Turns out not only were they lying about not being able to put me forward for a role without a number, they also just threw me at some random USA-based company without asking, and then spent two weeks flipping their poo poo at me via email and LinkedIn. I've taken a look at the job spec they forwarded to me after putting me forward, and it's super bare-bones and is a 6-8 hour interview process across 4-5 weeks for a company of less than 50 people. I'm not in the USA, they're not big enough to justify that much timewasting, and I didn't even ask to be put forward for this. I'm taking the "inteview" tomorrow just to tell them how badly their recruitment process is loving them. They're probably not going to be happy with me at all.

Okay, sure, except as I pointed out, the JD explicitly stated "salary at commencement of employment." She replied to this with a noncommittal "we'll try to fix that" (??) and I proceeded to cut the conversation short. The next day I got an alert that they reposted the role. Ah, I thought to myself, I'm glad they fixed the language. They did not fix the language.

What kind of thinking? Say yes to them and keep looking, unless they are going to pay you to sit on the bench. If they aren't paying you you are under no obligation to them. The mantra of "If you take a job try to sit with it for x months" does not apply if you aren't getting a paycheck. And getting a security clearance is a PIA even if you're boring. It's very opaque and completely arbitrary if it takes a while or not.

It's very likely assuming they win the contract they'll just have you start working while the security clearance goes through its process. The last time I went through that they started the process in December and it wasn't approved until June, but I was working the whole time

A clearance isn’t a pia for you, but you don’t get to know anything. I got denied an interim secret and it took months to get my secret approved. Getting a clearance is a big resume booster btw. Yeah in general unless you're worth a lot to some company they won't bother sponsoring a top secret, they'll just find someone who already has it and train them to do the job.

Top secret jobs are near military facilities. Not all of those are in the rear end-end of nowhere--there's plenty in DC, Colorado Springs or the Boston area--but you are constrained by where the bases are and that can rule out some of the better places to live.

During that time they have absolutely no reason to keep you instead of someone else for any reason. The only thing you provide is a warm body, which has value but is extremely replaceable for any reason at all. I mean, may as well agree I guess but don't consider yourself employed until you actually start getting paid and you should be actively trying to get another job. You can always tell these guys "Sorry I need to eat" if you find something else.

There are plenty of TS jobs in regular places, but you’ll be stuck spending your days in a windowless room where you are forbidden from bringing in any sort of electronic device, which cuts you off from the rest of the world for eight hours a day. Some people really like it, but it is definitely the kind of thing you need you’re into before you accept the job. When I worked in that situation it was a very high turnover gig… a lot of people didn’t even make it into the closed areas before they bailed for a different job.

Lockheed, NG, etc were all desperate for TS people when I was in that sector and had TS jobs wherever they had major programs. If you have a TS you prob don’t live in a tank, you’ll prob sit somewhere else. I worked on a gen secret program that had windows but yep no cell phones. Certainly that’s luck of the draw tho. If they want to move forward with your candidacy you need an offer before DAY which is a few days before your company B offer expires.

Hey uh what is with the enormous amount of job placement/headhunter companies that are just google searching the same opening off indeed and LinkedIn that I am searching out, where it is always a call from a voip number based out of New Jersey and it’s an Indian call center person pretending they have an American name? Got the job with AWS. 70 days from initial contact from the hiring manager on LinkedIn to the email notifying me today. Should have the offer to go over with the senior recruiter tomorrow. Took 9 months after graduating grad school to land a job. Hundreds of applications, many of them to Microsoft and Amazon since I live in Seattle. This is just my personal experience with landing a job in a big tech company, but I'd recommend having a really good LinkedIn profile that gets noticed by a hiring manager or recruiter. Many of these roles are probably getting hundreds if not a thousand plus applications and it's tough to get noticed with just your resume. Cold applications didn't get me too far. Once you've talked to the hiring manager the biggest hurdles are the "loop" interviews with 5 different people. I'll write more in a later post on how I prepared for these, but you need to be very good at answering STAR interview questions. Impress these people and even if they don't think you're a good fit for the role you initially interviewed for they may instead find you a different one, which is what happened to me. Initial role they thought was too technical for my experience, so they found me a role with the same title on a different team.

fyi aws usually culls new people on the team at the two year mark, so when you approach that time get ready to demonstrate performance I’d start keeping track of visible, high-impact work as soon as you can.

Sorry if this isn't the best thread but are there any job search sites worth a drat nowadays? Any time I put something like analytical development into one of these sites I am getting a mixture of general contractor roles for housing developments or art director that needs to be analytical.

I think LinkedIn is still the best. If you're not finding results by searching job title, try to find keywords that would be specific to the role that you want. For example, when I was searching for "privacy engineer" titled jobs, I was finding a lot of compliance-related work which is not what I wanted. I got much better results when I started searching for "privacy by design" as that keyword does not commonly show up in compliance roles.

I almost exclusively used LinkedIn for finding jobs and then applied on company websites directly. Indeed seemed to have all of the same postings as LinkedIn so I stopped using it. Recruiters also only ever contacted me on LinkedIn. Probably depends on the local job market as too which job board is better though. Like 75% of my interviews were from recruiters contacting me directly, so I highly recommend reading up on how to make a great LinkedIn profile or pay someone to do it for you. I paid for a resume rewrite and a LinkedIn Profile rewrite and both helped me land the job at AWS.

gently caress. Me. I was approached by commercial laboratory and offered a job. I’d be doing my own thing Monday to Friday, and would have my own workspace to play music or audiobooks while I work. They need me to start when I’m on the other side of the planet on my literal first trip overseas so I can’t take the job.
