Thinking about getting an otto temporarily to help with hair algae. It's not likely to have issues with betta or shrimp, right? I have an aquarium store I like that will basically give me a rental.

So is more C02 going to help algae? I've been passing on CO2 for the last month or two because my algae problem is a bit severe, but Now I think that was a dumb mistake. :ohdear:

I really, really like this layout. You sure you don't want tetras? Most other schooling fish are gonna go after shrimp. Maybe Loreto tetras or something else that's rare and not just a cardinal?

Thanks! I'm not set against tetras as a whole, and those Loretos are pretty neat. I was also looking at celebese, forktail, and gertrude rainbows, but I've never kept small rainbows before any opinions on them? I just want something small, uncommon, and neat to look at really.

I do have a question about ordering shrimp online. Does anyone have any personal recommendations for large quantities of shrimp? I'm looking at either blue pearls or tigers, but I want like 50-100 and most of the prices are like 2 or 3 bucks a shrimp which is just out of my price range right now. I found one guy with really great prices on aquabid, but he ships from Hong Kong which makes me pretty nervous, if anyone has any experience with that I'd love to know.

You could probably get a good deal on tigers if you don't care what colormorph they are. The dark blue ones are the expensive ones but they don't breed true. Odds are there's someone who's gonna be culling the ones that aren't

Beginners should get as large a tank as they can. If it's less than 15 gallons and your first tank it's a deathtrap.

It was a 106, they are about 400$ cheaper than yours so no DVD included.

My betta doesn't appreciate the extra current but the oto cats keep riding the output flow across the tank.

Only been running for about 5 days and the hair algae disappeared overnight. The algae that remains is just lifting off of wherever it's attached where it used to be lifting it would pull up the plants it had tangled around. I'm actually planning on upgrading to a larger tank. The Frogbit is only there to kill current and help combat the algae. The hairgrass seems to have doubled in 4 days. Can't wait until the last of the algae clears up.

There are lots of easy tropical species that play nice with plants. I wouldn't put goldfish in with that if you paid me. Try skinning some boiled peas and throwing them to the goldfish if you wanna see what would happen. Would be the most expensive salad you've ever been privy to.

Yeah, when I worked at a Petsmart (Yes I know) the manager of the specialty section was this ridiculous, PET Island level animal care nutjob. We had like 8 quarantine tanks in the back that she basically stole from the shelves (Policy was 2). We would get pretty much every fish from the normal providers but we always got gourami from a second provider.

Is there a good getting started guide somewhere? I'd like to maybe start a 5gal tank with a betta and maaaayybee some shrimp? Would the beta eat the shrimp? I have no idea!

Bear in mind a five gallon tank is really, really easy to nuke. Like you make a pretty bad mistake in a 20 gallon and it's no big deal but even the tiniest mistake in a five gallon and the hair algae becomes sentient, garrotes your fish and forms a giant, throbbing middle finger soaring majestically out of your tank.

I've heard of Amanos trying to eat tank-mates. Is that a real thing or just a mix up with species?
