Didn't that guy go to one of those scammy for-proft Art Institutes (or was that a different Reddit trainwreck)?

I went to one of those to the tune of about $80k. My wife and I both had parents willing to cashflow it, otherwise we wouldn't have probably gone. Looking back that is actually somehow a worse reason to go, but you couldn't tell 20yo me much of anything.

I am making 60k a year now and both sets of parents are fine financially so it's all good I guess.

Someone called into Dave Ramsey yesterday and described a scenario in which a person's elderly parents gifted $30k each to their 4 adult children.

This happened 12 years ago. But one of the 4 kids never cashed the check. The parents died recently and now the bonehead has tried and failed to raise a claim against the estate for the $30k. This lead to a relationship meltdown in which the person is trying to pressure the other 3 siblings to pay $10k each of their own money to reimburse.

If your margins are so thin that you can't price a discounted rate that doesn't have you operating at cost/loss, you probably have bigger problems than Groupon.

I think the problem is more than inexperienced owners look at it as a loss-leader marketing attempt. They erroneously think the groupon will result in additional sales from other products and services and bring repeat customers. They cut the margins too thin on a gamble.

It's just so weird that he apparently has enough in his portfolio to swap them all out for apple stocks, and have $100,000+(?) after a 10 point increase? How is he currently so hosed with those numbers? What am I missing here?

He's not buying stocks, he's buying short term options. Those options probably only cost a couple bucks apiece, so a $10 increase in the share price means 8% profit on the stock but might be 200-400% profit on the options. The flip side being that if the stock price drops 2-3% he loses it all instead of taking a tiny haircut.

Thanks, I figured I was missing something!

Credit Unions bro.

I do bank at a CU but our savings rates are ~1.2% still. It's a pretty small scale one, so maybe that's part of it. I haven't heard of consistent 3s since the late 00s. Good deal :)

I didn't have to use financial aid, but can someone elaborate on how it reduces your total bill? Beyond things like grants. I was under the empression it was a full tuition agreement with a mixture of subsidized or unsubsidized personal and parent loans.

I think most people here are really interested in islamic law in regards to investment. It's really interesting that you'd feel the need to defend poor rates and their criticism as religious disrespect though. You are fine to believe whatever you want but you cant walk into a money forum and ignore the math as the more important factor of discussion.

All this "spend now, worry later" is predicated on the idea that you can only do cool, fun stuff that costs money when you're young, whereas when you're 40+ you'll be content to work-tv-sleep all day because all old people are boring and literally unable to understand the concept of fun

Seeing my parents in their late 40s and early 50s was actually a big wakeup call to me that that era could either be the best in my life or the worst depending on whether I make reasonable decisions now. I think I naively assumed as you got older you'd be less able/interested in adventure, but I really respect them and they are trely hitting their primes of confidence, professional achievement, and self-actualization now. I'm now one of those people that looks forward to aging, or at least doesn't fear or dislike the idea. I started to shift around 27, when I got married. Life is long and can be either lovely or awesome, and that's almost entirely up to me.
