Awesome! I could use some good local advice. I'm not an offroady type or speed demon, but if people feel like doing some leisurely riding about the backroads, pick some arbitrary barbecue joint or local sight to stare at to make it a mission, I'm up.

Location: Adams Morgan/Columbia Heights
Bike: Currently bikeless since some dickbag set my Ninja 500 on fire a week ago (as detailed in this thread). I'm 90% sure I'm getting an SV650 once I figure out more secure parking
Years ridden: ~2 years, just took MSF Intermediate
Down for: slow-ish group rides, backroads sightseeing, general douchebag hipster socialising in DC

This thread comes at a good time: if anyone has a suggestion on how to find safe indoor motorcycle parking in the Adams Morgan/Columbia Heights area, as soon as I can lock on decent parking and the Geico check comes in I'll be buying my replacement bike.

Any NoVA/DC/MD goons have a good line on a way to get a bike towed for service? There's a bike sitting in storage down in Manassass that I want to get up to Clinton MD (50mi between those two points). Though I've used Craigslist to find random guys to help move bikes before, word-of-mouth I've heard that that's a popular bike-stealing scam as well, plus I usually have to filter through the guys who have no idea how to move a bike but happen to have a truck and think they can somehow figure it out.

Any company that doesn't charge terrible prices (tough for a trip of this length), or know anyone that has a truck, a bike, ramp, the general know-how, and can be vouched for as not a dirtbag?

Call Clinton Cycles and ask who their towing guy is. I can't recall his name, but he did a good job with my Triumph and wasn't terribly expensive.

Their guy (Chuck's Towing) is $135 hookup plus $3/mi. So that'd be at least $285. Not astronomical, but I've gotten folks to do about the same move for $100 though. Just thought I'd see if any ideas jumped out at folks.

Why not rent a uhaul truck?

Like an actual enclosed truck with the built-in ramp and all? The smallest truck with a ramp is $30 + $1.35/mi, so since I'd have to pay mileage down and back it'd be 100+ miles, so with fees and gas that's getting pretty towards $200+ as well.

It may honestly just be easiest to suck up and pay a little more for Clinton's recommended guy to do it just so someone competent with all the gear does it. But thought it couldn't hurt to check here.

If anyone has a lead on any secure garage space for one motorcycle, something metro accessible that's at least vaguely close to DC, I'm looking to rent for a few months until I figure out some other details in my bike situation.

Second question, if I have a bike that is currently way expired on VA registration, and is at a local mechanic, is there any reasonable way to get it 10 miles back to whatever garage space without:
a) paying a few hundred dollars to register in DC
b) paying $100+ to get it towed there even though it'll be up and running
c) getting ticketed in DC for driving with long-expired plates.

suggestions?

TapTheForwardAssist, temp VA tags are only $10, maybe try and get those? Or grab a motorcycle trailer from U-Haul for $15.

Well I'll be, I thought temporary tags were just what you got with a full registration until your plates arrived in the mail, but apparently not:

quote:

If your motorcycle has expired tags, you'll have to get a 45-day temporary tag from the DMV service location at 301 C Street, NW. You'll have to bring the vehicle's title in your name (or correctly reassigned to you), proof of insurance, and a $13 fee to get the temporary tag.

So $13 and getting my insurance going will do it. Then I'll have 45 days to ride it and figure out whether my goal is to sell it or register it all the way and ride it longer.

It's a Triumph Bonneville I had in storage while I was out of the country, and then just didn't get around to getting back going. Stored pretty well, no huge problems there. I just never enjoyed the Bonneville as much as I thought I would, and want something nimbler and more flickable, so I'm pretty sure I'm in the market for a naked SV650 or Ninja 650. But the main thing is to find a safe parking space and get back up on a bike in general, since I'm getting a little stir-crazy in DC.

I'm still debating getting a garage from my landlord for Dec - Feb, but we would have to have at least 5 guys throwing in for that to really be worth it in my opinion. The garage is on 1st and V NW and would be $225-250 a month. I know ought ten is interested, what do you think?

Someone has offered me the free spot in their garage though, which is why I'm holding out on the other option.

That's a little out of the way for me, but then again I'm not getting a bike to be a daily driver so much as something for occasional rides, daytrips, etc. so I suppose it's not imperative the bike be just down the street of me. By bikeshare I could be down at 1st and V in 15m or so I suppose.

Doesn't start until December though? I just registered by Bonneville I had down in storage in VA, but I'm thinking I'm going to sell it off over the winter, or at start of next season at latest. I'm pretty sure I want a naked SV650 instead, since I'm big on flickable/nimble bikes, which the Bonny is not. Getting up early Saturday to go pick up the bike from Clinton Cycles, down off of Branch Ave, so it'll be good to be up and riding again. I definitely won't be parking it in my neighbourhood given the arson on my previous bike, so I'm figuring out whether there might be safer parking a few blocks further west of me, or if I'm best to just park further out of the city in a Metro-accessible area.

This will take some puzzling.

BTW, if anyone in the DC area needs any parts for a Ninja 500, give me a shout.

For any DC area goons, I have a whole ton of extra motorcycle fluids I don't need since I don't have a bike currently and may be moving out of the area.

I have probably 7 sealed quarts of oil, a part-full 5qt with fresh oil, carb cleaner, chain lube, dielectric grease, the works. If anyone wants to chip in a token amount ($20ish) or equivalent value in beer or something, I'd be happy to hand it off to you. I'm still living up in Columbia Heights.

What weight oil? I'd be happy to throw some cash or beer your way if it's 10w-40. Or I'll buy you a ticket to 12 o'clock boys tomorrow.

My vote is you get a new bike and stay though. Some of the other MCs have been trying to move in on our turf and we could use some more bodies.

I've got some 10w-40, some 20w-50, and some 15w-50, and the aforementioned bunch of other lubricants in my apartment, pornographic movies and amyl nitrite.

Package deal, I'm just trying to clear out my closet.

I'm not writing off getting a bike in the future, this is just a very transitional year and I'm trying to stay pared down and ready to bolt.

I probably can't get up there until Tuesday, maybe Monday night at the earliest. I mean I could walk but :effort:. So if someone else wants to jump on this first I won't stand in the way. If it's still around in a couple days I'll come get it.

If you can come Tuesday evening that'd work pretty well, especially if later in the evening. I found some antifreeze and other useful stuff too. Shoot me a PM with your contact info.
