Yeah Beppu is obviously self-aware about his weight and while jokes are made and gags used, they don't feel malicious. It's more just, oh hey he's fat and gets in trouble/deals with stuff a fat person would. He isn't used as a measuring stick against the protagonist as an example of failure or whatever, he's just another person.
