It isn't his finest moment, no, especially hard on the heels of "Hmm, this group of armed guards was horribly slaughtered by unknown creatures that are presumably still around. Oh well we'd better TAKE A NAP RIGHT WHERE THEY DIED." It's not the worst case of sudden onset dementia in an RPG protagonist, but he's certainly being aggressively dumb.

We should all just be grateful the localization team didn't take it in a different direction.

The one thing I don't care for about Shulk's design is that you can set him up to be a decent damage sponge and he's pretty good at grabbing aggro, but for most of his abilities to have their full effect he requires a tank because you can't position yourself relative to monsters that are actively trying to kill you. Also, I set the game down for something like a year and a half in the middle of the next area, so I had no memory of that scene with Mystery Creeper and the telethia until just now.

It helps if you think of it as a German spelling with a Mandatory Fantasy Y shoved in there. Someone in the party has to have one. It's the law. Edit: Alternately, it is pronounced "rain," only through the mouth of Eliza Doolittle: the Reyn in Speyn steys meynly on the pleyn. I'm also reminded of Skies of Arcadia, although it's been so long since I played it that's mostly due to the improbable land masses involving spectacularly long falls. Something about the way the natural world is presented, particularly when they really decide to crank the dial on the scenery porn, also makes me think of Okami. The art style is obviously very different, but if you compare, say, Satorl Marsh (the current area) at night to one of the revival sequences in Okami there seems to be a similar aesthetic at play. Of course, that's probably less direct influence than Japanese developers living in Japan taking inspiration from Japanese landscapes. This was the section where I realized Dunban's right arm really is completely limp. He does everything with his left hand only, including pulling himself up vine-covered walls. Not sure how he manages that one.

I think my favorite thing about that scene with Alvis is how he's playing it cool and mysterious and aloof and I'm-over-here-no-wait-suddenly-I'm-behind-you and then is completely taken aback when Shulk lunges at him all "Does this make us MONADO BUDDIES?!"

I still haven't made up my mind whether the design of the High Entia is awesome or stupid.

Stabbey_the_Clown posted:I think I'll go with "stupid". Even in-lore, basically none of them can actually use those head-wings to fly, they're just kinda pointless. Well, they're presumably vestigial. I mean, it's still a silly place for flight organs, but on the other hand we've already seen the nopon can fly, or at least hover momentarily, by flapping their ear-hands. Maybe the High Entia traded useful head appendages for functional forelimbs. Or maybe they serve some other purpose. If nothing else I give them points for not having wings stapled to their backs with no obvious means of musculoskeletal support. Instead they're stapled to their temples with no obvious means of musculoskeletal support. Progress!
