If I want to do some kitchen table drafting, is it possible to make a solid cube for like 3-6 players? Would it be too hard to balance it for my high end and low end player bases?

Basically I've got a group who really likes the on the spot deck building element of Dominion and I think drafting from a cube would be a fun way to get them interested in Magic. They have tended to be on the overwhelmed side previously when playing around with some of my other decks, and my thinking is that they would enjoy it a bit more if they saw all the cards laid out in front of them ala Dominion (so I guess I would do a rotisserie draft, at least to start). So hopefully there would be enough variety to keep them interested, but not so much information as to overwhelm them.

e: I think the perceived level playing level field of everyone picking from the same pool, and the control that goes along with that would be pretty big pluses for them too.

7 Wonders rules they like that too :)

I like your second idea, thanks. The more I think of it a full cube would definitely be overwhelming at first (although really fun for me to build :o ). It's going to be about giving them jussst enough control to keep them happy and jussst enough information not to overwhelm them.

Thread Necro because I love cube and I could use some cube advice.

I have a big old (720 card) powered cube I'm working on and I'd really like to include the signature tribes for each color (so Humans/Merfolk/Goblins/Zombies/Elves + Slivers because one guy I draft with loving loves Slivers and there's a lot of mana fixing in this thing). If I'm using roughly 50 creatures for each color in (+ some limited gold stuff), what is the ideal creature count for each tribe to make it draftable but not overpowered? I was thinking 25, does that sound right? The rest of the cube is somewhat comparable to the Vintage MTGO cube, with reanimator/storm/twin/sneak & show/swords/etc.

Hah, but yeah we glimpse draft. So you take X, burn X, depending on the player count. Some tribe cards will get burnt, but so will stuff from other archetypes. In general we also draft a pack or two more than you would in a typical cube. If anyone wants to draft what I'm messing around with and tell me what they think, here it is: http://www.cubetutor.com/draft/109020 (it isn't set to Glimpse, but it's roughly accurate because the amount of AI drafters).

Hmmm, gotcha thanks. Just not enough slivers? Or too many good cards that you didn't want to pass up?

Cool, thanks for testing, I wonder if I need to get more fixing in there or just drop slivers. Running more sliver hives I guess could be a thing but I'd rather keep to singles.

e: Also just realized I forgot to put Dark Ritual in there whoops I knew storm felt weird.

I'm still around, lol.

I'll be posting most of my card evaluations for new cards on Twitter for the time being... wtwlf123 over there. Plus, I can post in here too, though I'm not on SA nearly as much as Twitter.

poo poo I had no idea you posted on SA, your stuff on MTGSalvation was awesome and I heavily referenced it in building my own cube

e: also holy crap these last two sets are insane for cube

So are there any alternatives to keeping track of (and drafting) from your cube? Cubetutor has been unusably slow for like at least three days now.

I've got a giant binder of cards that've been accumulating since Shards of Alara, and I've got a few friends who haven't played much of any format before but who're interested in playing limited. Are there any good resources for advice on building a cube from scratch?

Oh yeah tons, I tend to like these ones but there are many others:

https://cubecobra.com/content/article/5f6051acdfc243103ad4b6db & https://cubecobra.com/content/articles/0 --> Cube Cobra is great for managing your cube and they've really stepped it up with their article game lately.

https://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/the-game/the-cube-forum/articles-podcasts-and-guides -> A bit focused on the typical vintage cube experience, but good info.

http://mtgcube.blogspot.com/ -> This guy has been cubing forever and does pretty solid ratings for each set.

https://riptidelab.com/forum/forums/cube-talk.5/ -> Kind of the opposite of mtgsalvation -- they can be really niche but if you're planning on using cards/themes not found in typical vintage/modern/legacy cube, it can be pretty interesting.

Here are some of my cubes if you want to check them out: http://cubecobra.com/user/view/5d8a4733d6d574217d37d2b9 -- the Majors is a pretty straight forward Vintage styled cube, Minors/Juniors/Amateurs have more clear themes/lanes, and then the Bantams is just a good stuff cube I use to mess around with cards I want to try.

wtwtf123's cube is kind of the gold standard for vintage cubes (he posts here sometimes actually): https://cubecobra.com/cube/list/5d61aa23b8ec593ca4b76ca6
