This American Life had a fantastic episode about disasterpieces called Fiasco!. Particularly Act One, which is about a total train wreck of a production of Peter Pan. I'm one of those weird people who doesn't usually laugh at things when I'm by myself, but this piece actually had me laughing so hard I cried. For some odd reason, productions of Peter Pan seem particularly prone to failing miserably. At this given moment, somewhere in the world, some poor young actor and actress are flailing around the stage, smashing into set pieces and muttering desperate prayers to god that they can make it through just one more act. This YouTube video is a testament to that: http://youtu.be/kr0O3hKKnrk Also, on a related topic, the unmitigated disaster that was "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" is probably my favorite tale of schadenfreude. A Broadway musical about Spiderman that cost $65 million, and was a total mess. It is the tale of one woman, Julie Taymor, an artist with a meteoric rise to fame, who was brought crashing down due to her own hubris. While a Spiderman musical may sound dumb enough on its face, the director was given total free reign and cooked up a huge steaming pile of garbage. Oh, also Bono from U2 had a hand in all this. The musical included a godlike Mary Sue character, Arachne of mythology, and even had a singing Greek Chorus (you can't make this poo poo up). Also, the production was plagued with a series of horrible accidents and injuries from its cast flying all over the loving place on cables. At release, it was almost universally mocked and derided and the director basically became a national punch line overnight. Finally, in a desparate bid to recoup their losses, Taymor was fired and her show gutted. They cut out things like the Chorus and most of Arachne's part and ended up with a by-the-numbers superhero story like you'd see at a live performance at Universal Studios. Metacritic has a great section where you can see before and after reviews of the play. Also, this really long piece tells the saga that is this flaming train wreck. Truly the stuff of Greek tragedy. Both Sony and Microsoft has pretty big technical foul-ups during their press conferences. The sound in the Battlefield 4 trailer failed to play in the Microsoft conference, so the EA rep had to stand there awkwardly while the audience heckled him. And the Assassin's Creed 4 demo lagged to the point of crashing during Sony's conference, leading to a pretty uncomfortable silence. I love moments like this.

Thing is, a similar thing happened with many people for many years with The Newlywed Game and the question of "Where is the strangest place you've ever gotten to urge to make whoopie?" with the answer of "In the rear end" from one of the wives, and for years it was considered to be just an urban legend. Even Bob Eubanks couldn't recall it ever happening, but the episode surfaced around the time they were making Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and they put the clip into the movie in its original uncensored form: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1T5E4cVwyBE Since almost all of the episodes of the Pyramid from the 70s were wiped, the "Doe" "KNOB!" incident will always be an urban legend, but who knows, maybe some home recorded clip of it exists in some form and will eventually surface so my dad can say "I loving told you so "

When I was in the Boy Scouts, I remember this younger annoying kid who one day was whittlin' with his knife, cutting towards himself. I told him to cut away from himself, but he just rolled his eyes and said "that's not how I was taught." Not 30 seconds later, the knife had slipped and he slashed the poo poo out of his palm. He looked at me and I'm pretty sure I had the best face that a 12-year-old can make.
