Another good Godfrey Ho joint is The Ninja Squad, available of course from the Wutang Collection: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gpACMv8hU4

An evil red ninja is wiping out the ninja masters one by one. Richard Harrison's character Ninja Master Gordon sends his student Billy home to the big city to avoid the bloodshed, but Billy finds problems in his old hood: gangsters have taken over! It helps that the base film (looks like a Filipino basher?) has decent fight scenes, including the climax at a shipyard junkyard. The inserted caucasian ninjas are suitably ridiculous and sprinkled liberally throughout, and the 2 plots fit together well enough, what with young Billy dealing with the gangsters and the angst of being a modern ninja, and his ninja master Gordon defeating the evil ninja who poses a threat to the future of all young ninjas. And it's got an awesome score which i assume is totally stolen from some other better films. A+ ninja all around!!!

They also give the lead gangster a ridiculous Mexican accent like "eyyyyy Billy i didn't wan' any trouble from the neenja!" and everybody in general talks dumb and loud. When the gang shows up to threaten Billy's family one of them just loving screams "I'll burn your fuckin house down!" before anything's actually got rough. And Billy's family constantly dog him about getting a real job because he won't be able to make any money as a ninja and girls won't want to marry him!

Some of the ninja cut'n'pastes are absolutely dire slogs though, it all depends on if the original film had anything salvageable and if Godfrey and Co. keep the goofy ninjas jumping in on cue. Sometimes you'll see somebody like Hwang Jang Lee slumming it up (in Ninja Terminator, with a terrible blonde wig) and they also did some supernatural/horror entries like the Robo Vampire series and Scorpion Thunderbolt. Richard Harrison claims he thought he was only shooting for one or two films and was upset at being spread out into at least a dozen ninja epics, but seriously gently caress that guy he sounds like a real piece of work if you read up on him behind the scenes.

Also yeah Richard Harrison is in a shitload of IFD movies. You can literally see him age and gain weight and lose weight. I can totally understand his perspective of being embarrassed about these movies but he's straight up lying when he says he only worked for IFD for a few days and shot a few movies.

Haha sorry for not watching the video and shooting from the hip. It's a great film!

Also on a random cult film site I remember there's the saga of his exwife talking about what an abusive piece of poo poo he was and how he tried to hide his film income from her after beating the poo poo out of her

Does anyone have any recommendations for martial arts films that kind of blend in the supernatural? Supernatural ranging from wirework to laser swords. Anything with fancy camera tricks and interesting practical effects would be a great bonus. I've seen a few already, so if it's something you'd like to check out I would really recommend:

Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain
Dragon Inn

Encounters of the Spooky Kind
The Miracle Fighters
Come Drink With Me
A Touch of Zen
The Seventh Curse
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Somebody already mentioned Buddha's Palm, I'm seconding that. I'll also recommend Thrilling Sword from 1981:

Oh man, I love all the guillotine knockoff/sequels, weird/super weapons are one of my favorite things in old martial arts films:

Fatal Flying Guillotines: https://youtu.be/hVXYD8PTTdU

Shaolin Death Squad: https://youtu.be/8HujbIjJrug

Shaolin Kung Fu Mystagogue: https://youtu.be/Ww9rEhW9lEw

Three great cheap knockoffs with Carter Wong and lots of weird weapons! Mystagogue has some Shaolin Temple death traps too!

Deadly Silver Spear: https://youtu.be/F5OgeWt2564

Jimmy Wang Yu with more weapons and a beautiful snowy setting.

The Dragon Missile (trailer): https://youtu.be/Bes7xUNEUaI

This was the Shaw Bros. knocking off their own hit The Flying Guillotine. Everybody dogs it but I think it's a good flick with a cool alternative to the guillotine!

Zatoichi Meets the Flying Guillotine: https://youtu.be/7-rqcU7wAxM

Combo knockoff with a great Zatoichi impersonator. Crap quality copy, would like to see this one with a print on par with the actual Zatoichi films.

Founding of Ming Dynasty aka Tsu Wong Hu from 1971: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9zv6LJaSwo

Some kickass monster fights here with a giant ape, a giant ogre, and a cool Chinese dragon, plus retro ancient Chinese miniature sets!

quote:

This historical fantasy feature is one of several monster movies that Tsuburaya’s effects maestro/ Ultraman Story director Koichi Takano worked on in Taiwan (others being 1976’s War God and 1974’s The Devil From the Bottom of the Sea), while Sadao Tsukamoto did puppetry and 70’s Ultraman design honcho Yoshi Suzuki was responsible for the monsters’ conception.

Never seen Devil From the Bottom of the Sea but going off this pic it looks loving awesome, with flying heads and a sea devil!

Sea Gods and Ghosts from 1975: https://youtu.be/z158fYZeWY0

Recycles Founding of the Ming Dynasty's FX scenes and adds Judy Lee, who you may remember from Queen Boxer where she was advertised as the heir to Bruce Lee - but who wasn't at some point?

The Fairy and the Devil from 1982: https://youtu.be/6Ea7VAw5Cr0

Recycles Founding of Ming Dynasty's FX again for the opening credits and adds Star Trek music! Honestly kind of thin otherwise, but those monsters are so good.

Ready for some original footage? Okay, here's Thrilling Sword from 1981: https://youtu.be/MDRdT0N5UH4

Some super fun laser wuxia action, with a really gross meatball man and tons of cheesy 80s optical effects. Boutique label "Gold Ninja Video" just put out a limited edition BLU-RAY (!!!) of this film from a 2k scan, and it's already sold out! I did just see goon Tars Tarkas say over at his site (he provided a commentary track) that they're going to reissue it at some point tbd. I will definitely be watching out for that, this is like the low budget sleaze version of Buddha's Palm.

Finally, here's a couple of films that really might be OT for thread, but I'm throwing em in because we've been talking Inframan and War God:

Hanuman vs Seven Ultraman from 1974: https://youtu.be/0m8Y97ilsNg

Coproduction between Tsuburaya and madman Sompote Sands' Chaiyo Production of Thailand, features the monkey god Hanuman teaming with various Ultramen to massacre some leftover Ultra monsters on a gorgeous jungle bound rocket base. You also get to see a kaiju-sized Hanuman murder some temple desecrators while mocking their futile resistance! This began Sands' long, bullshit crusade to claim he owned the international rights to Ultraman, an affair that only wrapped up a few years ago with the rights being fully reverted to Tsuburaya.

Jumborg Ace and Giant aka Mars Men also from 1974:https://youtu.be/NhxVziobCYE

The same idea, except it's Tsuburaya hero Jumborg Ace teaming up with a stone giant temple guardian that Sands had previously created for his very first feature film! Everyone does some fighting on the moon and there's some stock footage from the Jumborg Ace series too. Both of these movies are aces in my book, fun off kilter kaiju thrills.

Thai posters were always beautiful and it seems like the artists actually watched the films or at least got promo kits to work off. This time the Italians did a good job too for their Mars Men version, but usually their stuff is incredibly goofy - check out any Italian posters for Godzilla movies.

seen at Brooklyn's Spectacle Theater yesterday: The Dragon Lives Again, the infamously bizarre Bruceploitation feature in which “Bruce Lee” awakens in the underworld (which looks suspiciously like the real one, or rather how you’d expect the "real world" to look in a low-budget martial arts film from 1977) and quickly becomes embroiled in a power struggle for the throne involving numerous copyright-infringing knockoffs of iconic pop-culture characters, including “Clint Eastwood” as the Man with No Name, “James Bond,” Dracula, “The Godfather,” “The Exorcist,” “Emmanuelle,” and “Popeye,” among others. I can't say it quite lives up to that premise - among other things, it's too talky, the fight choreography isn't great, and there's some pretty bad comedy - but you can't really come away with ill will towards a movie in which "Bruce Lee" defeats Dracula by kicking him in the head with a literal "third leg," or where a Hong Kong Popeye knockoff downs a can of spinach before defeating a gang of mummies in a kung fu fight.

Watching Thundering Mantis from 1980 on tubi in a low quality 16:9 print, clean enough for me. Film opens with the classic red backdrop and Bryan Leung (aka Leung Kar-yan) doin' all the moves over the credits except also some guys show up to spar and the first line of dialogue in the film is one of the dudes saying, "Watch out, that guy's crazy!" with great dubbed goofiness as Leung does some uh very expressive moves. Love it!!!

Fake edit: Leung is a great lead, kind of scruffy looking, looks like a real dude you might see around. A real lovable himbo type (so far anyways)
