When I'm filtering and people pull out almost over the lines so I can't overtake. It's not like they lose anything from me getting through.
This morning, one such chap was talking on his phone and smoking a cigarette while stuck in traffic also while sitting on the centre line.

Was coming home from work in the dark last night, hissing down with rain. Visibility was appalling, mostly due to-

- Drivers coming the other way taking a good 5-6 seconds to register another vehicle and turn their highbeams down, often needing prompting with a flick of my own, and
- A mudless, pristine chelsea tractor sitting no more than 4 metres behind me for a good 13 miles, despite me giving ample opportunity for them to overtake and tapping my brakes regularly in an attempt to make them pull back

Riding in the rain is the pits, especially on unlit, winding roads populated by road warriors and soccer mums.

Mother of motorcycle mercy, spare me from Saturday drivers. Today must have been the all-England drive-your-loving-Canyonero-at-2mph-through-my-quaint-little-town Championship or something because I almost had a road rage incident at several Chelsea tractor pilots gently nudging their ten-tonne brat wagons around the space lanes on my way home. You should need a HGV license for one of those things because they're a danger to sanity.

Strong opinions from outset.

Been working shifts that have a 6am leave and 9pm return, and I think I took for granted what the traffic is like at those times: nonexistent.

Went out last Saturday when it was sunny.

Huh. Of all the professions, I've found that nurses are the ones who are the most vehemently opposed to the very concept of motorcycling. I have one nurse friend who acted like I'd said I drive drunk for fun when she found out I ride a bike.

Lectures on how dangerous bikes are, young man, are daily occurrences, mostly from other staff, so I'd have to agree. But there's a pretty large biker population in my town and I always show up at work in full leather so I avoid the worst of it. People who come into AE because they didn't wear gear and need IV morphine for all those burnt-down nerve endings, they do get an earful.

As annoying as it is to be constantly reminded that you own a vehicle with the potential for greater induced harm than most are comfortable with, I do like the fact that people are generally warning you out of sincere concern for your health rather than a zealous desire to push their own minivan-driving (GBS-posting) agenda.

There's lots of cattlegrids around here too, which is absolutely hell when it's wet and hardly a trivial matter when it's dry. I don't think I would make a regular thing of taking that bridge.

The summer vacation is here, and the little brats are being loaded into suburban tanks to be driven to my county, a beauty spot and magnet for caravan-toting Chelsea wagons.

My quiet morning commute along unrestricted country roads is being ruined by tourists, holiday makers and fair weather bikers. 6:30am used to be my time, and now it's full of people doing twenty below looking for chintzy little coffee bars and farm shops, dragging forty-grand aistreams and peering over the top of genuine calf leather steering wheels.

I think it's the weekend bikers rolling their glittering midlife crises into town that annoy me the most - whether it's GSAs doing 2mph with both feet down and blocking the entire filter lane or Fireblades thinking they're so awesomely fast that it entirely negates the need to check their mirrors before changing direction, all of them are in my loving way, and more directly endangering me than any of the usual suspects.

Can't wait to move there in 2 months. Might sell the bike and walk like a loving hick.

Healthcare rather than tech, but the UK government just undid a change of 5-6 years ago where it was a requirement for nurses to have a degree. It's going to be an apprenticeship type deal now, like it was in the good old days.

Turns out having a degree level understanding of sociology/psychology isn't a lot of help when someone is going into septic shock. Quelle suprise.

The vast majority of my work is medication and treatment management. I wouldn't resent my degree if it had even began to prepare me for the actual work - we had close to zero pharmacology and physiology, and tons of social sciences bullshit.

All the actual useful information is learned on the job; the course was designed by academics, who can't fathom the concept of a practical degree, and bizzarrely think a BSc in nursing should contain no nursing relevant science, in case we start questioning the doctors.

Wb Slavvy, glad your brain didn't win.

Henryj: agree that "taking a break" isn't a magical cure-all, but quitting video games and work and living in a tent and hiking every day allowed me to think about what I need to manage my bipolar disorder and get help, so it's definitely a good thing.
Sometimes it's impossible to make the change you need if some bullshit is occupying all your free time and brain power.

I got shunted from behind by a rubbish lorry on Friday in London. The guy was on his phone and didn't notice; in fact he kept shunting me until I moved to the side, tapped on his window, and explained that he had hit me. He started yelling incomprehensibly. I noted his number plate, and the name of the company that contracts to the local council, and kept going. I later reported it to his company, they are "investigating."

I did a walk around of the fjr and it was fine at first glance. However on the way home today, I guess a damaged bolt finally wiggled loose and fell out of my top box rack. A out 5 miles out it fell off on the highway and luckily didn't hit anyone. I rode home with it balanced on my tank.

I wasn't going to report the incident to the police bit now I feel like I have no choice. I hope the truck had a dash/cab cam, in retrospect I should have filmed him sat on his phone in traffic.

I spent 3 hours trying to remove a steering head race today, it's jammed in tight and way out of alignment.

I used a punch, a specific tool, hours of penetrating oil and a blowtorch. I even ground an old notched flathead to make it flat on one side so it doesn't jump off the lip easily.

I'm going to Dremel it on Monday

About 3 weeks ago I was rear ended at the lights by a £80,000 Merc. I can't remember if I bitched about it in here at the time but basically I agreed to not go through insurance and have the bike inspected by my great local shop if he would pay for repairs in cash.

I recorded an admission of fault from him at the scene which turned out to be a brilliant idea because he proceeded to try and wriggle out of it for the next fortnight saying he was going to talk to his lawyers and that I was a liar out for his hard earned money, etc. Also fortunately I recorded our phone call (not admissable in court or whatever but still a good reference recording) where he spent the first 15 minutes calling me all sorts of names (but also admitted guilt several times again).

My local shop was brilliant, and spent 6 hours trying to diagnose the ABS fault caused by the knock (charged for 3 including getting the local Yamaha dealer involved). I sent the invoice off to the guy and am washing my hands of it. I brought them some beers when I collected the bike today and they were genuinely made up.

I will insist on insurance every time now and just leave the bike in the hands of whoever the insurance company chooses. Lesson learned.

Always record altercations if you can!

A few reasons why I didn't go for insurance at the time - my big crash was 5 years ago in October and still isn't paid out, I didn't want my premiums to go up, and - most naively of me - I thought I would do this guy a favour.

On a side note, solicitors are the absolute worst and if I didn't have my dad's probate, the aforementioned crash wrangling and a house purchase all currently in progress I'd quite happily never talk to one ever again.

For some reason even water cooled Triumphs run really hot and struggle in traffic on hot days, that goes doubly for the classic air cooled styles. If you've had much time idling at reds in our 30+c weather over the last week you're probably getting really really toasty and are experiencing pre-ignition and detonation. This is really bad for your engine and should be avoided as much as possible

In my experience, as the relative wealth and value of vehicle goes up, so does the entitled indignation about being split by a motorcycle, or anyone, really.

In contrast, in the "poor" town down the road, people will cheerfully drive their beater in the ditch to let you through.

I used to work at a boarding school, and the flashy parents in Lamborghinis and Teslas would fall into the first group, whereas the old money multi-million/billionaires and/or titled gentry driving clapped out 60s land rovers and 80s ford escorts would be in the second.
