I just read The Last Policeman, and it feels like this takes place in the same universe. An asteroid is going to destroy all life on Earth in less than a year, and almost everyone has either killed themselves or just left their jobs to do whatever. The few that do remain are largely unqualified, and tend to not really care as the world's falling apart anyway.
