For those of you who are interested in conversion techniques, here's a video on using gradient maps in Photoshop to make black and white images. I wouldn't be surprised if you could use a similar technique with PaintShop Pro or some other programs. http://www.iso1200.com/2013/09/photoshop-tutorial-awesome-black-and.html

For the folks who make prints from their digital B&W stuff, I have some dumb questions: 1) What places have you dealt with that do a good job? I'm thinking ProDPI but I'm not 100% sure yet. 2) Do I need to do anything special to the file when I export it out of Lightroom? Meaning that, even though it's a B&W file, do I need to make sure it's calibrated a special way?

Black and white is my jam; first it came out of necessity of shooting high iso's in venues with tiny red or purple downlights that didn't play well with my DLSR sensor, now it's just because I like it. It works well with concert stuff.

I hope toned black and white panoramas are okay. Most of my live performance stuff gets converted to black and white, partly due to things looking better when shooting with a high ISO, but now I just prefer the sense of emotion a simple black and white conversion can give to a live shot. The music photo thread seems to be dead so I'm just gonna pop these by here. I love how when I know I'm shooting for black and white (which is all the time, now) that I have way more leeway with silhouettes and change the mood of the show from what was a bit flashy lightshow into something a bit more ominous.

Kidney Stone posted:Nothing special. These are very, very grey. You have to think in B&W when you're shooting. It isn't good enough to just convert later on. Look at your scene and use your meter to see how much each surface is reflecting. Avoid large areas that you know are going to translate into middle grey.

Well, they were shot with the B&W setting on the camera, so I might have do some tweaking of some sorts. But yeah, they are quite grey.
