Another reason is if they didn't properly compact the fill. If they dug down to level in most areas and had to use some of that to fill in a deeper spot and didn't pack it as tightly as the ground around it is packed (very difficult without a lot of work or one of those vibratory compactors you see on construction sites) then that spot will sink over time and the slab will crack over it if any significant load is placed there.

At work this August they cut up and replaced a 30mx30m internal pad that normally has press tools stored on it, total weight around 1500t. When they cut it into sections the middle dropped about 150mm, 20 years of automotive presses thumping away had done a proper job of compacting that the original contractors hadn't.

Unless you have a better source hidden away even untested, unknown history, missing parts 13b engines go for at least a grand here.

If you have a better source get in touch please :v:

All depends on what you're going for, really. I mean, an NA 13B can last as long as any other Japanese engine if you take care of its quirks (don't overheat, premix or make sure the oil injection is working). If you put value on having a quirky classic Japanese sports car that can last a good long while, figuring out an engine once and just driving isn't that much of a cost, especially given as how FBs (at least where I'm at) are available cheaply. If you're looking at it in terms of what value some future owner would put on the car, well, I won't try to argue, except to say that fixing up most older cars doesn't make sense either.

*quick edit* I should note that I had a couple daily driven FBs, one of which I bought from a junkyard and just drove. Additionally, one of the cars I got had something like 270k miles on the odometer. So it's not like 12As are automatically going to be dead, just it's more cost effective to go with a newer 13B than trying to rebuild a 12A.

I don't want to discourage anyone, but over here it's something to bear in mind: spares aren't common or cheap, neither are specialists. Even worse we don't have a glut of V8s hanging around in the yards to replace it with.

That's not entirely true - they aren't popping out of every car you see, but there are usually a few in any yard, and a few phone calls can hook you up with any kind.

Very few LS series motors over here. But plenty of Rover, Jaguar, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Toyota V8s.

The issue is that we don't have any V8s with aftermarket parts or support. No fancy heads and cams and strokkkkkkker cranks for us, no sir.

Argh, true. But as you say no aftermarket, and most of those V8s are physically larger than a pushrod small block. Not all, but seriously who chooses a rover V8 these days?

In the UK, you can get a 'needs engine rebuild' 2005+ RX8 with otherwise low miles, for around £500. And a 1UZ for £300. Do you see where this is going?!

I was going to post the first part of that, RX8s under a grand, FDs don't seem to come under 10k regardless of condition. Would the 1UZ physically fit? The LS swaps look snug.

Sorry for the derail spyder.

I'll have to do some machining to get the ports to line up and add some external oiling, but it saves me having to run a oil filter relocation kit.

It's a early A series block, castings don't take high boost easily. It also came as seen, bare down to the crank with no oil pump, intake, etc. But that's just the excuse I needed to cut some full p-port housings and toss some ITB's on it. It's still going to cost $15k to do it, but it's still cheaper than trying to get 350hp from a 2.8 stroker!

A large format 3d printer would let you knock out 'quick'* iterations of a new complete pan, but that's another tool/skills etc.

Good idea with the oil cap, yet another thing you need to live with these cars to have noticed.

*1mm nozzle, thick layers, low res etc...

I'm not suggesting a 3d printer would replace conventional machining at all, just another possible prototyping tool.
