That's the sane way to do it, IMO. Full billet is such a waste of resources when not absolutely necessary, better to mix welding and milling where it can save energy and raw materials.

You are going to have to put a lexan bottom on this pan so the extra triangles are visible after installation anyways.

Jesus that's a kick in the nuts. The stock one appears to be stamped steel though - I'm sure you could make a batch of oops pans and people will still buy them, just not for as much. What's the benefit of the top plate, baffling?

I've made stupid mistakes like that... Live and learn. Nothing that expensive, but it hurt even so. The last one is actually why my fuel sending unit adapter on the Honcho is uhmw PE instead of 6061, some idiot measured the first step diameter on the o ring gasket surface in the bore... And then spent an hour turning the entire bore to that diameter instead of just the first quarter inch. :suicide:

Holy poo poo, man. That's rough. At least everyone's ok and I guess you're getting a new roof or three...

It took like ten plus years for the trees to come back after a tornado and freak 6 inch snowstorm while the leaves were still up. Hopefully your area will recover faster than that due to the extended growing season.

Another thing to think about, if demand for the new engines remains high, it may factor into Mazdas decision-making on how long to continue to make them. Things are more likely to be discontinued sooner if demand drops...

I was just gonna say, you better be putting a dormer in that, that's the perfect excuse. Historical society is ok with it right? IIRC you said your place is historical or something.

I seriously regret not adding giant dormers to two of my bedrooms when I did the roof.

Yeah, seems like a gigantic pain in the rear end tbh. I was very glad my place was put down as an 1898 build in the database when they created it in 1998 (far as I can tell, specifically to avoid it being classed historical, town wanted tax revenue) rather than it's true age

Looks like it's gonna be a beautiful addition to the building!

Those look like the baker's racks that home Depot has for decent money? I like those, they're surprisingly strong for the price.

I feel you on shop cleanup, mine was a cesspit even compared to your messy pictures and I HAD to clean it up for the project I just finished. I swept up 60 pounds of grinding dust, lathe chips, dirt, rust chunks, unidentifiable "it fell off the bottom of the truck while I was working on it" gunk, random rusted and cut hardware, chunks of old seals and gaskets, part baggies and boxes that fell behind and under shelves and large parts, etc etc etc. And that was only a 28ish by 14ish area I think. It was pretty bad.

Goddamn, that's a lot of work you've put into that truck. It's always nice when there's only one thing really keeping it from starting. Well done!

I was going to suggest exactly that. Nice to know when you're nearly empty and NEED to pit for fuel. Maybe a big angry red light on the dash? Does the factory gauge work with that cell?

You guys know of any electronic throttle bodies of roughly that size? A friend is looking to build a full custom FADEC for a rotax 503 twin cylinder experimental and asked me just a few days ago, as luck would have it. I told him to try a smart fortwo or a twinair but we never got the dbw ones here in the states.

E: looks like factory carb was 36mm bore

Man I usually hate shiny stuff everywhere and prefer to keep things looking OEM, but it still hurt a little to see that beautiful aluminum tig work get spray painted. Mine looks like total rear end compared to that. Where'd you buy the weld-in fittings, BTW?

Edit: wait, why is one of the barbs not welded in?

That's awesome, I've ordered from them and they're literally across the water from my place. Aka a 1.5 hour drive

I had o idea they had cooling system parts too. Or that you could weld the barbs on from the inside...

Now I'm curious. What DO you have into it? You've put a staggering amount of work into that truck and as far as I can tell it's not a project you really want to be working on, just a "cheap" tow rig that has turned into the Whip of Theseus.

Yeah, that's honestly not super bad for a truck with a lot of life left in it. I figured it was going to be a bigger number, too. Still a bit of sticker shock but... Full-size diesels are expensive and you've basically replaced anything and everything that was worn on it.

Jesus, what possessed you to buy a Jeep?

So sorry to hear about your friend, that's horrible that he didn't even find out till the last minute.

Electrical upgrades and building work look great, I think I see some of the famed Rainbow Root that you dug up midway? It looks like we use the same incorrect tools while driving ground rods, too, I had to beat a few silly with a T-post driver while doing the electrical service install at my inlaws new woodshop this summer. My Makita rotary hammer wouldn't even touch them for the last few feet after we hit hardpan.

Can't believe the amount of car stuff you managed to get done too, I wish I made even a tenth that kind of progress this year.

I think imgur may have done you dirty because unless I'm just blind, a fair number of the pictures are repeated several times in multiple posts. I actually gave up on using their official app some time ago and use another app (unfortunately no longer available from the app store, guessing they got a cease&desist) to do all my uploading.

Now I'm even madder that I didn't manage to make it to Gambler 500 OG this year, too.

I may be as un-picky as they come but personally I'd just run the mismatched plating and forget about it. Plating of any kind beats crusty corrosion and rust in my book. If you sent me a mixed bag of both colors with a new product I'd notice the difference and assume it was just a lot to lot or supplier to supplier variation and install it without a second thought.

That being said, I'd definitely give another shop a shot next time, might as well try em all till you find the one that gets you the best most repeatable results.

I really wish Tesla would stop trying to apply software developer techbro "move fast and break stuff" innovation to durable goods. They do stuff like that and it's just... Why. There was no need to reinvent that wheel poorly just to relearn the already learned lessons on why not to invent it poorly that way again.

Yeah, I don't think I've ever gone farther than dunking a horribly greasy part in a bucket of gasoline and maybe hitting it with a wire brush to loosen the crud, other than that I clean mating surfaces only. And here you are turning out what look like concourse level restorations on underhood subassemblies for the hell of it "while you're in there".

I swear that transmission shifter and floor boot are identical to the NA Miata I've been working on the last few months. I just did the shifter rebuild on it Saturday.
