While we are still doing comic suggestions: I'm unreasonably fond of Darwin Carmichael is going to Hell. I has recently ended and I should probably go and read in once more, this time in one go instead of one page per week. The artwork starts out a bit bland but improves immensely over the course of the comic.

If we're able to request having our comic sorted in under the op, I'd very much appreciate having mine (curia regis: http://whatido.co.uk) listed. We're only a few pages off the end of Chapter 2! It doesn't really fit neatly into any of the categories as it's long-form pseudo historical, but I guess fantasy has the closest overlap??

How much does Scott Kurtz contribute creatively to PvP these days? If he has a team of writers for story lines, and other people are now drawing it, does he just pay the website server bills and collect the advertising revenue? Is his idol Jim Davis?

It doesn't feel like he's even writing those particular strips. The punchlines are hitting a lot differently, and the art is really, really weird. The mom has like, one pose. She just seems to hover around with her arms folded.

The way I understood it, Scott is drawing the Max/Cole vs. the Vipers storyline while the new artist, Terry Blas is drawing the Jade/Miranda/Brent vs. their Mother (in Law) storyline. I don't know how exactly the writing workload is split down between Scott and Dylan Meconis, but I imagine that they are both contributing to one degree or another to both storylines.

The only issue I have with Terry's art so far is that I feel like the character poses aren't always the right ones for what is being said in a panel, especially panels in which a character is seemingly supposed to have gone through more than one emotional expression.

Alright, folks, I reorganized the items in the second post along somewhat different principles, as some of you have already noticed. I also tried to move any abandoned or completed comics to the appropriate sections. Descriptions are still a work in progress but should be closer to the mark. A few comics that got talked about frequently in the last thread have been added.

I also have a queue of, at the moment, 21 comics that people have asked to be put in there that haven't had a lot of discussion in the thread. Nobody bit on Al-Rashad yesterday, so we'll table that one and move on to number two, Buffet of Lies. FunkyAl posted a couple examples on the last page, which I'll repost here:

The earliest strips are very much in the gag-a-day mold and tend to be somewhat crude, artwise and contentwise. Later strips tend towards mini-storylines that are a bit reminiscent of Pictures for Sad Children or Gunshow (although with more of a recurring cast of characters), and the art improves pretty significantly.

So, what do you think of this comic, thread?

Since I'd rather talk about small comics, I want to bump a few others!

Mythos was already mentioned, but god drat is it cool. The writing is really interesting and dark and hilarious, and Kismet is constantly switching up techniques and styles to tell the stories. I really admire its experimental nature, and also its dry sense of humor.

Buffet of Lies is similarly bizarre and witty, but with a completely different tone-- FunkyAl described it once as "like The Simpsons but with Muppets" and that's honestly a pretty good assessment.

If you like one I think you'll like the other, because both comics have this quietly absurdist existential note that is both hilarious and really smart.

I love the poo poo out of Buffet of Lies. I've said before that it's the one comic I would genuinely compare to KC Green's stuff -- not because they share similar gags, or even particularly the same sense of humour, but because they both have a very natural way with comedy that feels experimental and fun, not contrived. It took me a while to realise there's a consistent world and logic to the strip, which when I did notice was what really sold me on it. It's hard to describe because it's such an unusual beast, but in a really good way that makes me laugh obnoxiously in empty rooms by myself. Also, it has great alt-text and it plays with cartoon logic in a way that's all too rare these days, and I'm a sucker for all that poo poo.

e: Oh wow, thanks Grantaire. 'Absurdist existential note' is actually a way better way of saying what I was fumbling at there, so thanks, and I agree.

- The cast (seen so far) is entirely gay/bisexual
- Topless ladies not intended to appeal to a male audience
- The main character is a pre-op MTF transgendered, brown, gay woman.

(There's also a very good mix of PoC, now that I think about it.)

Basically, Iothera is cutting-edge progressive. (Which I described as 'tumblr' partially because that's where I see socially progressive ideas advanced most commonly/vigorously, and partially because it's funny.)

It's really sad that something like this gets labeled as cutting-edge progressive, and not, just like, you know, a comic. It's almost like there's an entire industry that seems obsessed with catering to a dwindling population of a very specific kind of nerd. I guess it's why web-comics are actually pretty neat.

Yeah, that's what threw me I think. I guess I've been reading comics with queer casts and stuff long enough that I don't associate them particularly with tumblr, so much as with indie comics in general. It would be ironic if that kind of content became ghettoised because people started looking for it.

It's not so much a comics problem as a widespread cultural problem. (Though of course comics are especially bad.) Movies, television, books, you name it - all parts of our culture have problems with handling or even including characters who aren't white, straight, etc. One of the nifty things about Iothera is that it's a great template for how to do so without compromising the story or succumbing to 'tokenism'.

I don't know. I read quite a lot of webcomics (~80 in feedly at the moment), and very very few of them make an effort to include minorities, much less to the extent that Iothera does. I'm thinking maybe half a dozen of the comics in my RSS reader include gay characters (and I'm counting Dinosaur Comics there), and one of them includes a transgendered character? (O Human Star, which I only ran into about a month ago.)

Gunnerkrigg Court, Bad Machinery, Riverside Extras, Templar AZ, Widdershins, H&J, Bad Reputation, Love Me Nice, TJ & Amal, Doomsday My Dear, String Theory, Buffet of Lies, Oglaf, You Suck, probably a ton more I'm not thinking of at this moment. And that's not counting a whole lot of stuff that's disappeared or that I lost track of over the years. Some are more representative than others, but there's no great lack of comics with PoC, women in lead roles, or queer casts. Like I said, it's just not something I associate specifically with tumblr.

All I meant with the ghettoization thing is that I worry it's becoming increasingly common to lump anything non-mainstream into one box and call it 'tumblry', which I know a lot of people treat as an insult. It just makes certain things easier to dismiss, I guess.

Just for reference, I figure that we can put things in there in either of the following two cases:

1. The thread agrees it's really good.
2. It promotes significant discussion whenever it comes up.

Since that list is basically there as a way of turning people on to interesting things they might not be looking at, it doesn't matter if the comic has a million readers or one reader right now, as long as it fits one of those conditions.

I'm in the same boat with regards to webcomics. I just went and looked at my own regular-read list, and roughly three quarters of them have protagonists that are straight white males. So getting recommendations for good comics that break out of that mold is a cool thing for me, too.

Mmm. Of the comics in your list that I've read (GKC, Bad Machinery, You Suck, Oglaf), I'd only say Oglaf is especially inclusive. It's a matter of degree, though, so I'll stop before I get down to the real hair-splitting.

I see what you mean about the ghettoization problem. Tumblr's done an amazing job, first in popularizing a wide variety of progressive ideas, and second in discrediting them in many people's minds by associating them with furries, otherkin, and, well, 14-year-old Doctor Who fans. That's absolutely not what I meant to do with Iothera, but I can understand your concern - it's not a few times that I've seen perfectly legitimate concerns dismissed (for example, on these forums) with "Oh, it's just more SJW nonsense".

Iothera can escape that, though, I think - it's not a comic about gay/transgendered/PoC issues, it's just a comic which includes those things. A good way to go about things, I think.

(Not that there's anything wrong with writing a comic about minority issues - but I think that ghettoizes you more or less by definition!)

I got that feeling as well, I think it's because much of the time the characters feel like they are posing rather than just being.

I've tried to read Iothera but I've found that what turned me off it eventually was the feeling of how... specific? the characters were? It's kind of suffering from same-design problems where the women have very similar bodies, facial features, etc and the clothing types are very similar and specific in many instances (the half-shirts, short dresses with thigh-high stockings, boots, etc). But the issue I suppose was that it seems more fetishistic almost than just lacking variance, like "this is what attractiveness is." I understand that's probably not a fair summary of it, but that's the impression I got and it made it less enjoyable to me. (Perhaps the sense of 'posing' characters amplified that.)
