I'm bad at the game, but after dying many dozen of times I finally decided to do a stupid run using the glassy fae staff. turns out it single handedly carried my whole run, all i did was pad out physical attackers and a way to make space with dispersion. Then just focused on pets to stall and defences I guess?

I am also quite bad at this game, but I started surviving a lot longer when I was started to focus on allies

I picked it up and played a few runs. It's got a good vibe and shows promise, I enjoyed myself, but I didn't think it's ready for prime time. If you're fine with that - go for it. The devs seem to have an appropriate level of engagement and responsiveness.

Last few floors have an insane amount of health and resistances to chew through.

That's not jolly.
That's not jolly at all!
I'm impressed with how many viable strats RW2 seems to accommodate. That said, I think there are some standout spells which really punch above their weight. Most of these can fit into a wide variety of loadouts, with later entries focused more on building on specialized synergies:

Scourge -- 2 points: A 5-turn stun that ticks for AOE holy damage around the victim. This is a great option to pick up early on, as it completely shuts down enemy wizards and can be used to CC beefy enemies or block a hallway if you're at risk of getting swarmed. Being a cheap Holy spell that's worth casting into the lategame is its own niche as well, as there are plenty of enemies with loads of resistances which are specifically weak to Holy.

But the real power of the spell is its 4 point upgrade "Mass Scourge", allowing it to chain to an unlimited number of targets adjacent to each other. This is incredibly useful, as each victim acts as a source of AOE and the compounding damage is excellent writ large. One of the best tactics I found was to find a choke point, cast it once and/or bodyblock for awhile to generate a traffic jam behind that one enemy, and then do a followup cast that snakes throughout the halls and kills dozens of enemies at once. It's probably one of the only viable options to clean out a level that has become choked with a slime infestation.

Disperse -- 2 points and Blink -- 3 points: Putting these together because you'll definitely want to grab one early, and probably both later on. Disperse is the more aggressive option with a whopping 20 charges and the 3 point "Violent Warp" upgrade which offers solid AOE damage (even for a non-Arcane build). Blink is the most straightforward mobility option in the game and can be upgraded to ignore LOS for 2 points. Use it to zip around levels and take out monster spawners ASAP.

Pain Mirror -- 4 points: Any damage you take is replicated to all targets in LOS as Dark damage. A good percentage of Rift Wizard's levels are "flat" with few or no methods to break LOS, and these levels can sometimes be frustrating depending on your loadout and the types of enemies you face. This spell is a fantastic counter for such levels. A single cast will frequently kill everything within a few turns (assuming you position yourself to take damage), and even on levels with high Dark resist it's worth a cast simply to take out all the monster spawners. In the lategame you can double the damage with the 6 point "Burning Pain" upgrade, and double it again by stacking it with the "Carnival of Pain" spell. Of course, any spell that demands you take damage is going to pair well with a healing option, leading us to...

Soul Tax -- 5 points: Deals 33% of the target's current health as Holy, then 33% of the target's remaining health as Dark. Heals you for all damage dealt. A powerful spell from the first game returns with an even stronger 2 point upgrade, "Insta Tax". It allows you to cast the spell without ending your turn, even casting it multiple times back to back. There really isn't a better single spell for taking out those multi-tile behemoth enemies with thousands of HP that have been introduced in RW2. And on-demand burst healing that doesn't take a turn would make this worthwhile even if it did zero damage. A pretty absurd spell overall.

Twilight Gaze -- 6 points: All enemies in LOS have their Dark and Holy resists reduced by 50%. The previous two spells are transformative, but they're worthless against enemies with immunities... unless you use this spell. You can increase this to 100% with the 3 points "Resistance Debuff" upgrade, although if you're focused on Arcane you may want to go with the "Arcane Gaze" upgrade instead. Definitely not something to pick up early, but a quintessential synergy cast.

Soul Reaping -- 7 points: Each of your Dark spells have a 10% chance to gain a charge whenever an enemy dies. 30% chance if the enemy was slain with Dark damage. Obviously this is very strong for a Dark-focused build, but it's still a worthwhile pickup even if Soul Tax is your only Dark-classified spell. With Pain Mirror delivering mass death in the opening turns you'll be able to continually machinegun your entire stockpile of Insta Cast Soul Tax, obliterating any dangerous nearby enemies and healing yourself to full in the process.

As someone who struggled a lot to like RW1, I'm liking RW2 a lot more. I think some of it is the small QoL things like charges/hp recharging after each level, but also the equipment approach feels a little more interesting to me than the old circle setup, and I like that I don't feel as 'required' to hit those circles in order to nail things.

I got Dragon Eggs in a previous run and that was crazy until I suddenly died.

Fun Shoe

Seconding Soul Tax, it was an amazing utility spell in RW1 and it's even stronger here. Scourge is also great but there's a lot of great cheap CC options now.

Also do not overlook Toxin Burst -- 2 points and its upgrade Withertoxin -- 3 points. Together they give you a massive AOE attack that doesn't require LOS for any part of it and turns off healing for anything that's not immune for poison. It also gets to double dip on fixed damage bonuses (Dark Lord, any applicable dagger type trinkets); Dark + Poison is not an uncommon pair of immunities but you can still thin out a shitton of most levels quickly from a safe position.

Silver Spear -- 3 points is another great staple that got even better. It's solid single target damage with great range and tons of charges, that also murders a huge swath of dark and arcane enemies, and now has the upgrade Copper Shaft -- 3 points which turns it into huge ally-safe AOE murder for anything that's not lightning immune. Especially because it gets full benefit from radius boosts, which are now easily attainable from disk items and the Master of Space skill.

I put 120+ hours into RW1 and love it to bits, and RW2 is so fun I can see myself doing it again. I got my first win with a very fun Steam Anima focused Fire/Ice build, however my pipe dream idea is to make an Eye/Enchantment Schools only run work, which seems largely impossible but I've gotten to Floor 9 with just the Eye spells and some Exotic Pets, so maybe with the right equipment and timing it could pop off like crazy. Time will tell!

Another spell worth looking at, especially as an alternative to Pain Mirror, is Blinding Light for only 3 SP, and it utterly trivializes open floors. Blinds everything in LOS for 4 turns and does bonus holy damage to undead/demon, which can be helpful for burning through shields. Only 2 more SP to quickcast it.

YAVP, my first RW2 victory.

Started out with Magic Missile -> Melt -> Heavenly Blast, got the Sorcwinter/Winter Crown/Ice Pipe by floor 7 so I decided to lean into the Ice Vortex build.

Ice Vortex -> Ice Tap -> +radius spam -> +damage spam. Blinding Light to protect me from dying instantly in the open (since Ice Tap Ice Vortex works best when there's a lot of enemies), Word of Ice to just instantly freeze everything if I couldn't get a decent freeze off early on, Siphon Shields to strip the Floor 20 boss and Mordred's army, and Blazerip to help with chasing Mordred. MM/Melt/Heavenly Blast helped to clear out anything resistance to ice, and to trigger the mass Deathchill from Sorcwinter.

yeah toxin burst with withertoxin is amazing since spawners are not immune to dark, also in rw1 toxin burst was one of my favorite spells for disintegration shrine, which is now guaranteed as a skill

also i love silver spear, such a good spell in both rw1 and 2, hadn't even thought about the synergy with radius boosts

with judicious floor choice it can carry you through early levels too letting you get an unfair synergy online quicker, especially important since you get fewer spell orbs on early levels in rw2

Played a couple rounds. It's not bad but it feels kind of rote. I cannot see it being viable to be outside a car at all given how many million projectiles fly around once you get the army onwards on your rear end, so the game just becomes driving around rather than engaging with most of the stuff.

Rift Wizard 2 is cool. I think I liked the first game more so far, because this one seems like runs really live or die based on the pure RNG of what loot gets offered to you and what kind of rooms it's in. Late-game enemies just scale way too hard to stand a chance against them as a lot of builds without supplementary synergy items, which has been leading to "play 2 floors and restart until I get a good seed" syndrome. But it is fun when those synergies come together and I'm excited to see how it develops from here.

I'm also still very much not a fan of its chaotic unreadable method of level generation but it is what it is.

Yeah, I played a bunch of it.
The deckbuilding was neat but as you progress up the difficulty, it becomes more and more clear that the game is about dodging patterns and the deckbuilding part is mostly vestigial, and that wasn't really my jam.

YAVP:

Crackledarkener (when an enemy takes Dark damage, redeal Lightning damage to two nearby enemies) and Carnival of Pain (when an enemy takes Physical, Fire, or Lightning damage, redeal it to 4 nearest units as Dark damage) creates an infinite damage loop. I expect it to be fixed/nerfed at some point.

Still had to take some utility spells to deal with Dark/Lightning resistance, but all in all a pretty easy run.
