Oteil is a great interview, I love it when he goes on the XM Dead Channel. His perspective on the last Dead and Co. tour was really fun to listen to.

Me: *losing it to the Nov 11 73 Dark Star > Mind Left Body > Eyes > China Doll* "man gently caress it, maybe I should just buy a copy of the Winterland box on the second hand market" Ebay:

I did some more drugs and listened to that Nov 11 73 Dark Star through China Doll again tonight, it's really like the jazziest the Dead ever got and it's so incredible

Got Dave’s Picks 49 in the house. Finally have “Healy sabotages Bobby’s vocals with preposterous amounts of fx” and “Jerry’s voice is even worse than you remembered” in the highest of fidelities. I kid, kinda, I like 85 as much as the next degenerate and they’re perfectly fine shows from the era, and both set 2s have nice high points. But yeah I don’t think I’ll be able to sell this one on Discogs to fund my retirement in a few years.

Dead And Co announced the Vegas Sphere run, no specifics on dates yet but it’s supposed to be 14 shows.

To me this essentially seems no different than running all inclusive Cancun resort festivals in terms of trying to milk cash from an aging/affluent fan base (I consider myself in that fan base tbh). And for the people that are upset because they thought the San Francisco shows were supposed to be the last ones ever, that football has been yanked away so many times, idk what else you should expect at this point.

My favorite local Dead cover band is a bunch of retirement age dudes that exclusively play Pigpen era stuff. Even my wife doesn't mind going to see them. The young dude Dead cover bands here are very bland.

I sure love those 1970 Dark Star performances that dissolve into ambient noise and silence. Why yes I have been listening to the Feb ‘70 Fillmore East shows how did you guess?

Yeah, it’s also wild to listen to the harmony lines that Phil sings in that really high register, he wasn’t able to do that by 73.

A cool thing about Morning Dew is that they dropped great versions of it in every era of the band. I was absolutely jamming to the high tempo set opening Dew rave-up when listening to 2-14-68 the other day. (but for real tho, those 73 ones are the best)

Final Blog Entry posted:I love those sets and play them on Spotify pretty regularly. Definitely worth a listen. I dearly miss catching the Bros every spring at Wannee Fest. 60s: Download Series Vol. 6 and Vol. 12; Fillmore West 1969 & Fillmore East 1969 early 70s w/Pigpen: Fox Theater St. Louis 1971; literally every Europe 72 show early 70s after Pigpen: Download Series Vol 8 and Vol 10; RFK Stadium 1973 later 70s: Download Series Vol 1 and Vol 4; To Terrapin; Red Rocks 1978; The Closing Of Winterland 1978 early 80s: Go To Nassau; Reckoning/Dead Set; Download Series Vol 7; Madison Square Garden 1981 late 80s & 90s: Without A Net; Nightfall Of Diamonds; Dozin' At The Knick; Spring 90 box set; Crimson White & Indigo 1989; Warlocks 1989; Wake Up To Find Out 1990; Saint Of Circumstance 1991; Ready Or Not There's also an incredible amount of stuff across all eras in the Complete Road Trips Box Set, but on Spotify it's kind of difficult to navigate that release, it's so enormous it can be difficult to find the specific shows within it (at least it is on the Spotify phone app)

Listening to Feb 15th 73 last week reminded me of how amazing the Dark Star > Eyes > China Doll sequence is in that show. For my money though the summer 74 Eyes are the wildest and the best. The Des Moines one in June and Jersey City one from August are real monsters. Post 74, I’m very partial to the performance from One From The Vault in 75 and the Estimated > Eyes from Dick’s Picks 18 in 78. trem_two fucked around with this message at 22:00 on Feb 25, 2024 |

Today’s 81 show has one of the best sounding AUD recordings I’ve heard: https://archive.org/details/gd1981-03-02.nak700.wagner.miller.90165.sbeok.flac16 Cool show too, tempos are kind of slow and the overall vibe is mellow, but the 2nd set is neat in how it keeps weaving in and out of PITB E: sweet, same taper was at the next day's show too https://archive.org/details/gd1981-03-03.nak700.wagner.miller.90473.sbeok.flac16/gd81-03-03d1t02.flac trem_two fucked around with this message at 17:25 on Mar 3, 2024 |

A few months ago when I was sick I put together a playlist of the earliest versions on Spotify of songs the Dead covered, got 45 songs in total. Was interesting to see just how far back they were digging into the original folk/blues canon. It also was a good reminder that Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly all kicked rear end.

1970 is a relative blind spot for me, at least compared to the surrounding years, there’s just so many dates where only incomplete and/or crappy quality recordings exist. So it was a real treat to listen to today’s (April 15) show from that year, some incredible and unique jamming styles on display. The jam after the drum solo in That’s It For The Other One almost sounds like Santana, and then the long, lovely jam out of Dancing In The Streets has a stretch that’s like mellow Creedence or something. And the Pig songs are killer, especially It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World https://archive.org/details/gd70-04-15.sbd.kaplan.14354.sbeok.shnf
