I love GMT games, Twilight Struggle is my favorite wargame, I like it a bit more than 1989, which seems to be balanced very favorably towards the Democrat side. Whereas Twilight Struggle I feel is able to hold a good balance till the Late War, where it becomes just superpowered against the Soviets. Still I love their games, I picked up a used copy of the first printing of Paths of Glory and a copy of Pursuit of Glory, though I haven't read the rules for the game. I've been meaning to download the latest rules for PoG instead of reading the included rules.

My one problem with GMT is that their rules tend to be very tedious, and confusing or maybe that's just the TS rules. It took me and 3 other people reading the rules to parse it out and even then I still end up in arguments about how scoring works in the game. I'm under the impression that if you have domination, you don't get the points for having presence since, well you need that to have domination, but if your opponent has presence that gets subtracted from the total VP gain?

I feel like the suffer from FFG syndrome where they make awesome games but their rules can be confusing as gently caress.

What is the general opinion on Lock n' Load games? I've been thinking about picking up a few of them since they seem really cool, especially World at War which reminds of the video game Wargame:European Escalation and Airland Battle. Though it looks like their hosting is down :psyduck: well I guess that ones for the TG as an industry thread.

I'm surprised to hear this, GMT generally has some of the best-written and best-edited rules on the market. They also tend to keep up with living rules on their website, have reasonable FAQs/errata, etc. The TS rules are pretty straightforward- you score whatever level of control you have in that region (you score EITHER presence OR domination OR control), plus bonuses for superpower adjacency and battlegrounds. The scoring marker moves the difference between the two players' scores.

I thought that is how it works, I've just gotten into too many debates with other people who have interpreted the rule differently. It might also be that when I first started playing it it was the first wargame I had ever played and was the only one gung ho about it. And while I was confused about some rules for sometimes, it looks like I got a hang of the rules sooner than I thought. How are GMTs COIN series of games, I really want to get Fire In the Lake and Cuba Libre?

If you have trouble with GMT rules, you're not going to like the Lock n' Load rules. I have Forgotten Heroes and it's never been on the table because the rulebook is terrrriibbly written. I feel like there's a good game in there, I just don't have the patience to work through the chummy conversational rulebook and figure out how to play. Then again, some people like that style. I prefer my rules pretty procedural.

Hmm, it might be tough but I'm willing to attempt to tough it out. Cause I just love the concept of Cold War gone hot scenarios. Are there any games like that on an operational level? Since as much as World at War intrigues me, I don't really care for tactical level.

So I just ordered Eisenbach Gap Deluxe, hoping it ships from LnL soon, I ordered off of their website directly since Coolstuff Inc still had it listed as a preorder even though they started shipping them out to people over a week ago. Anyone have any experience with the game system? And holy crap is it going to get expensive getting all of their magazines with the expansion units like the SADFs.

I was at a charity event at my FLGS over the weekend and they had a ton of games up for raffle and for auction, including a hole host of the old Avalon Hill games, so needless to say I spent far too much money, in that I destroyed by budget for the week, but hell if I didn't get a bang for my buck. So at auction I won a copy of Andean Abyss for 20 dollars, that and Twilight Struggle which I won (and already owned) in a raffle were the only modern games I won. The classic games I got were Jutland, The Guns of August, Rise and Decline of the Third Reich, MBT, World War 3 (from SPI) and Attack Sub. I lost out The Fall of France 1940 to some Brony rear end in a top hat. Hell I might give Attack Sub a chance since I've been told it was made for a younger audience so it might be less of a slog, though I do want to try out Jutland.

Yeah I was the only person that put a bid on fire it and the game 1830 so I got off rather well on that front. It was just me and a few of the older guys that bid on the old Avalon Hill games, except when they did an open auction when the ones on the silent auction didn't go, that's how I lost out to some jerkass Brony.

But I will try and let you guys know how some of them are, I'm learning AA first and want to try and rope in some of the other guys to play, than pick up Cuba Libre.

So I decided to give Cuba Libre a solo spin tonight. I went with the government to try something different, and while I didn't get my rear end handed to me, I still lost by technicality to the Mafia. It took awhile to get use to, but I think I got it down pat. It was a very interesting game with M26 and the DR fighting it out amongst themselves on the East end of the Island leaving me with only 18 support, while the Mob has 7 open casinos and 32 resources. It was very tense game even solo.

So I played a two player game of ADP on Sunday with a friend of mine, him as the Coalition and me as the Taliban, we played the Obama's War set up. We spend the first two rounds building capabilities with running events now and than. With the Afghani Government and the Warlords coming close to victory a few times. I'm able to snag a few of the negative capabilities early on in the game really hampering his ability to deal with me. I'm able to than explode across the Pashtun areas and the whole east, south and Kabul are in opposition. I really want to get a full 4 player game of it going but it's kind of tough convincing some of the guys at my board game group to try them out, though Cuba Libre was a bit of hit.

No idea really, but it is in the class of 'monster game' so I don't know how approachable it really is: probably not very. I'm excited about Illusions of Glory, because I always thought that Paths of Glory had too big a scope and the smaller theaters suffered because you didn't want to waste your Operations in them. I like the smaller focus of Pursuit of Glory so Illusions seems like a good step forward.

It's always tough to get the monster games to the table, hell I can barley get ADP on the table with my group, it's makes a few people uncomfortable since it's a very recent conflict, so that's been a lot of Cuba Libre, but there is some excitement for Fire in the Lake.

I rather liked the strategic level of Paths of Glory, though I only have gotten that on the table once, I have to review the rules and try and get it in.

I love the idea of Illusions, since the Eastern Front (and I'm assuming Allied intervention in the the revolution/civil war) gets so little attention when talking about World War One.

Any word on Fire in the Lake? I remember hearing it read suppose to come out on June/July and I've been bugging my local store about getting it pre ordered but they're not seeing it on their system which frustrates me. Fire in the Lake looks all kind of cool, but man, it feels like it is going to be a truly epic-sized game if you go for the full campaign. I can't see that happening very often. There are a lot of people interested in it, though, I think I find it easier to get ADP to the table than CL or AA since people are more interested in that conflict.

Oddly enough among my group of friends (some of whom are not ardent war gamers) there was more hype for Fire in the Lake than A Distant Plain, since a lot of people were uncomfortable playing in a war that is still going on since since had friends that are deployed in Afghanistan, but they were excited for Fire In The Lake, with so much time passed since the end of the conflict I think it's more palatable to people.

So excited for this game it's crazy. I didn't want to wait for store release so I jumped on the still open preorders/p500, i'm hoping it comes out soon. Gonna have to que up a bunch of Vietnam War movie soundtracks to play in the background while played.

Well it's not the US wasn't Air Strike happy during the war, he was just being historically accurate.

Which speaking of Air Strikes, is it just me or does the rule book not disallow air strikes in cities in FITL, which is fitting for the period. It got me thinking about house ruling at least ADP allowing air strikes into cities but causing them to degrade support one level toward neutral considering how counter productive the use of air power has been for building support in Afghanistan, especially considering drone strikes. But I can't remember if the shaded text for drones in ADP does something like that and I don't really feel like looking it up yet. But I think the US air power depleting support can be a wedge for the US and ARVN player, since the strike can give ARVN COIN control to the US player would have to make the case for the ARVN to build support and not just pad his coffers.

Got my copy on Monday, took a bunch of pictures and put them on Facebook I had a few friends who normally wouldn't be interested in a game like this ask when we could play, which sadly won't be till maybe next weekend if I'm lucky. I sort of want to try the single player but it seems much more daunting than in the previous games.

So I got to finally play Fire in the Lake tonight, it was 3 players, I played the VC and the NVA. We played for about one and half coup rounds and it got to two hours and people started getting tired so we did the run down and I just barley squeaked by in a win. I'm looking forward to playing the game again, sadly I noticed that my Arc Light capability chit has disappeared so I'm very pissed about that, thinking about emailing GMT and telling them I lost one of the chits and see if they can send me a replacement or I can pay for a whole sheet of new counters jsut to have extras of all the others.

I did a game of FitL solo this past weekend. I played as the US on the medium game. I got my rear end handed to be. The NVA was able to take and hold An Loc and the VC just exploded everywhere with an early Tet Offensive which forced a lot of my US pieces out of Vietnam, and and it was the card that would have let the VC player get the General Uprising card back if it had been used and if it hadn't (it wasn't) got to use that card as if it was General Uprising which allowed them to get a huge presence in Saigon which was at neutral support and they took the City of Hue. For much of the game the ARVN bot got bogged down in Lam Son 719 fighting wave after wave of NVA regulars. It was brutal, so brutal I sort of called it right there at the first (failed)coup card. I'm looking forward to trying it again as the US.I think this game might be the hardest to do solo cause of all the moving parts, like remembering the trump cards which are all able to be played in the medium game right?

Also a question during the US commitment phase that player can only choose up to 6 pieces to move between available and the map (or the map to available)?

I was thinking about how I would kind of like to see a COIN game dealing with the American occupation of Iraq, but I sort of realized that it would be too similar to A Distant Plain. The COIN factions would have the exact same goals, you could have the Iraqi resistance who want control of the country themselves and the Al Queda/Foreign Fighters faction which would be opposed to the US who seek to raise opposition in order to bring people "to the light" of their religious ideology and opposition to The West. But well it would just be A Distant Plain without the Pakistan tracker (maybe replaced with a Syrian one?) Though maybe we'd get to see one about the latest dust up in Iraq and Syria. You could have the government forces be split into the governments of Syria and Iraq who want control but cannot work together. Maybe troops and police assigned to that side of the border have to stay there until they are killed and returned to the general pool. ISIS, who in a Fire In The Lake way can have troop cubes representing their use of captured Syrian tanks and Iraqi weapons are about control. You could have the Free Syrian Army who are after support from the population, and I'm not sure about how to do maybe the Kurds, since ideally they would want control of spaces to carve out their own country. It's probably a bad idea and wouldn't work but well it might be worth a thought even if it could be extremely controversial. It was hard enough getting ADP to the table with people who like Cuba Libre because they knew people who were currently deployed in Afghanistan.

There is one in the loop called 'A Long Hard Slog' but I think it's been shelved for the time being due to ISIS changing the whole scope of the conflict. I think the early stages of the occupation/insurgency would be fairly different to ADP, because unlike Afghanistan the Iraqi army and government was effectively disbanded very early on and not reformed in any meaningful way until quite a bit later. The game might suit 3 factions more than 4 (US, Sunni militias and Shi'ite militias) which is something people also said about Ireland I think. A game set today involving ISIS and Syria would end up being a pretty different game overall. Maybe the Syrian Civil War would be some kind of pivotal event for the Sunnis in a game starting earlier.

Anyone heard anything more about Iron Butterfly? I saw the playtest shot from a while back but haven't heard anything since.

Really I didn't hear about A Long Hard Slog? That's suppose to be about the War in Iraq? Yeah in retrospect I realize I glossed over the disbandment of the Iraqi army in the summer of 2003, posting at after 4am I guess will do that. But as a 3 player game I can see that working I was just focused on continuing the 4 player at that runs through the COIN series.

The two COIN games I'm really looking forwars to now that I have Fire In The Lake is Iron Butterfly and the one about the Irish Revolution/Civil War. Though I have to get my order in for Liberty Or Death since Gallic War got pushed back.
