Just 'cause you pour syrup on something doesn't make it pancakes!
So a ticket came in.

A guy was having connectivity issue with a PC. This is a different client than I normally deal with but not a big deal. I troubleshoot his system, an older XP computer, and signs point to a failed NIC. Call up my manager to let him know because this client isn't on a plan and doesn't have a dedicated support team.

:raise: Hey, I talked to the guy and troubleshot his PC. Looks like the NIC on his computer failed and will need to be replaced.

 alright sounds good, make a ticket and send it to sales, they'll quote him a new PC and you can sell it to him.

:raise: Uhh sell it to him? I'm not a salesman, we have a sales department for that.

 Since this client isn't on a monthly plan, the agents that work with them have to sell them the upgrades.

:raise: ... so the only times that sales gets involved is if the client is already in a contract?

 yes

:raise: cant we just sell him a $15 nic and get him up and running instead of him being down for a week because we have to order in a new PC for him?

 No. Sell him a new computer.

:raise: Do I get commission on it?

 no, you aren't sales. Only sales gets commission.

:raise: ...

It was one of the owners. He tore me a new one for getting sales to send a quote to the customer I posted about yesterday. 3 more resume's out this morning.

Edit: so i call the manager back who is also the dispatcher, tell him we need to replace the network card as I got a call from the owner that the client is upset about getting a quote. I didnt tell him anything the owner said. He gets quiet for a moment and very quietly asks me to assign the ticket to him and he will take care of it.

Update: This new computer quote to a customer that needed a replacement nic thing has kind of blown up. Ive had three people get me to retell what I did for troubleshooting the client and what the conversation with my manager went like.

Luckily the manager and I had our disagreement over what to do in a text chat so there isn't any ambiguity there, but I am expecting people to try and shoot holes in my troubleshooting.

When I document a process I do a full step by step guide. If the documentation is client facing, I include screenshots for every step. I do the same thing when i write out internal how-to's for our clients as well. Our documentation portal is based on Drupal with a bunch of custom modules built for it. The guy that made and maintained it was fired so its hit and miss if people actually update it. What people miss most in documentation ive seen is context . There will be a documentation entry that will be called "mail server" and a username and password in it. No server name or link to external mail host. Ive also noticed that people will create entries for resolving a common problem and post a link to a forum post or some website instead of typing out the steps themselves. Ive seen more than one 'fix' linked to a deleted thread or webpage that is down.

So the client i support had one of their development contractors get a job in the states with Microsoft and he moved down there a few weeks ago. They need him, and only him for some reason to continue doing development work on this web app he was working on. They had me create a windows VM with no network drive access and had me figure out a way to restrict his access as much as possible so the data on our clients server cant be opened due to patriot act ( the clients exact wording). To keep the data he is allowed to access safe we need to restrict where he can work on it. They are going to write a clause in his contract specifying that the web data is to only be used on the virtual machine. The problem is they want me to come up with the wording of it. I've told them I cant advise them to do that, but they are insisting I provide it and so is my boss.

I get an email today from the CEO saying it still isn't working.

Ive never done this before so I googled the solution to see if there was something unchecked or a setting missing. I checked the exchange server, nothing had been done to it and the SR billed two hours for it. I made the changes, restarted IIS and everything is working great.
