So if ballys goes rear end up are there any teams in a position to just start their own network? I assume the cardinals and the braves. I feel like mark Cuban could give the mavericks a channel if he could get the rights to the Rangers. I’m know ballys has numerous problems. Is having to pay for the rights to 30 something teams a major factor? Is it a lot easier for a company to just worry about producing baseball and 1 or 2 winter sports in the same city/region? I’m the NY market, so it’s 3 stations for the 7 sports and only YES has year round. Like how loving hard can it be to have a cable network with baseball all summer and hockey and basketball in cities like Detroit or Minnesota? They have all 6 teams in Florida. I know Florida fans only care when the team in winning, and maybe New Era is the only one making money from that. I’m sure there was plenty of overlap in the non game programming, but why not just have one network and if there’s 2 games at the same time half the state gets Miami, the other half gets Tampa and figure out how to mix them up with north florida.

The summer before the strike in 93 I could watch 5 games a day with the Yankees on wpix also. I wonder if baseball would be more popular if there were more games OTA. We get Mets games here about once a week and the Yankees used to be the same, but Amazon bought the syndication.

Is there any thought about espn taking over most major college sports rights killing RSNs? Like I remember FS NY would show random pac 10 basketball games at like 10 or 11 after the local games were done. Or other leagues when there wasn’t a local game at 7pm. Back before the ACC network when Syracuse would have a couple games a year on the local CW from the acc syndication package my friend that worked for Sinclair said that local ads were a bidding war basically and they had to give first shot at the lawyers and car salesmen that spent a ton of money all year Like I’m sure fox sports Carolina would have multiple NC/SC teams playing every week, and back when the conferences were smaller you cared about what the other 9-11 teams were doing so you would watch those games randomly. But if the hornets or hurricanes aren’t playing what the hell are they going to put on? Just some national live highlights show that probably doesn’t have very high advertising rates?

I wonder if apple thinks they’ll get all the graduates of pac 12 schools to sign up? Like $7 a month or maybe an extra $20-$50 a year for pac 12 sports is pretty minuscule for the entertainment budget. Especially if your team and it’s rivals are the only thing you care about. Also, could apple buy the rights to individual teams if ballys dies? Could they buy the rights to the Miami heat, LA kings and St. Louis cardinals if they wanted? Or would it be pointless since they could only show them in their markets?

Vertical Lime posted:eh, nesn charges $30/month too for their streaming service Sounds great if you’re a fan of the knicks (lol) and a hockey team. But I think I’ll just stick to the october-April plan and save $100. The smart move is just make it $210 so you don’t have to worry about losing customers that don’t sign up in the fall after cancelling in April. I figure $3-$5 a game is fair. Like Knicks vs OKC on a Tuesday is $3. Knicks vs Celtics is $5. I suspect the $10 a game is for gamblers and fans of the other team. Any fan of those teams is just going to pay $30 a month. If you put $400 on a game watching it for $10 is pretty insignificant. And the price is probably based on NYC. $10 will get you one decent beer and a tip at a bar. In upstate it’ll get you 2-3 domestics or 2 lower end craft beers. So at that point I’d just go to a bar most of the time and maybe find a couple people to talk with during the game.

Can someone explain the significance of match of the day to me? Is it like a pre/post/halftime show for the big game or is it commentary with live look ins around the league? Is it like if hockey night in Canada didn’t have its studio show on Saturday during the games?

I guess if the money is there CW is a decent network to be on I guess. It’s gotta have as much coverage as a big 4 network. In my area it’s on the same signal as NBC. You can put 3 games on nationally every Saturday and get some ratings from non pac markets. I’m sure it won’t do gangbusters in the north east. But if it’s available for free to literally every tv in the country your going to get viewers and advertisers.

Old people still have cable. Young people will just watch illegal streams. But if you have an espn package for $30 a month you’ll get that money you were never getting before. Especially if it’s a roommate situation where 2-5 people are splitting the cost.

That Amazon game is also on wpix in the nyc area. They just simulcast Yankees games to the rest of New York or whatever the territory is. Before last year those games used to be syndicated OTA. Also are the Sunday morning peacock games on NBC?

Vertical Lime posted:as of last year wpix doesn't carry those games anymore, it's amazon-only in yankee territory Oh jeez, I assumed it was still wpix in the city and Amazon was rebroadcasting it upstate instead of being on the cw in my city. If you live in NYC, how hard is it to get OTA channels with an indoor antenna? Or do all the buildings have antennas on the roof that you can hook up with a coaxe cable?

In between my bouts of excitement and anticipation I was thinking. Why did they announce this 5 days before air date, are 30for30s usually announced with such a small window? Or is it because the nba and nhl conference finals are blowouts this year?

I’ve made this exact same statement about why the original AG was the best version of the athletic competition shows. Just give me grainy footage from your friend holding the camera while you lift weights at the gym then do the training course at the firefighter academy. I don’t care that your little brother died of cancer when he was 10, and I sure don’t need to see pictures of his last birthday at the children’s hospital for 3 minutes.

So maybe you can just buy the rights as long as it’s not for similar things? I’m sure there’s a number NBC can offer fox for the song that is both significant and minuscule on a 2.5b deal. Since the official lyrics are property of SNL they can just use that version maybe.
