I managed to get ridiculously close to it and it never moved. It didn't die. I worried about it and was in the process of thinking of putting out some water or something but it eventually left right before sundown. Never saw it again. I'm thinking it's some kind of warbler but I don't know which one. I'm a casual birder, but I'm pretty sure what you have there is a female (or juvenile male) Magnolia Warbler!

I once saw a male Cardinal feeding mulberries to a hungry baby Robin (by the time I retrieved my camera, he was gone), so maybe some of them have a strong paternal instinct.
