What did you say? I can't hear you. You wanna wall of text? Have a wall of text.

PANO :catholic:
Rocks: Many (good) TAGs, +1 BS across the board, good visors and special options. You’re the best at shooting and shooting is the meat of the game.
Sucks: No warbands, a whole 1 skirmisher, many low-WIP units - poor specialists, lower mobility. Can't haul rear end across the board and has a harder time in scenario missions.

YU JING :china::hf::japan:
Rocks: +1 CC across the board, very varied and good HI (including robots that are so good they count as HI!), hellishly fast JSA, 5pt regular orderbots, good at lightning strikes and close-range firefights, good at low points. Excellent drop troop.
Sucks: JSA is a glass cannon, some expensive jack-of-all-trades units

HAQQISLAM :jihad:
Rocks: Regeneration, Religious, a fuckton of cheap regular HFTs, Haris as a second link-team that does not limit the first, excellent mercs in QK, Holo1 shenanigans, Impersonators
Sucks: seriously, Ghulams for 13pts? Plain rifles instead of combis, your TAG's a beast and hard to drive anywhere. Fidays work poorly against aliens. lovely and few remotes.

NOMADS :furcry:
Rocks: best hacking in the game, awesome specialists (you can airdrop engineers with helperbots!), fun terror units and warbands. Good vanilla troops in Corregidor. Excellent cheap/light TAGs. Nasty (if unfun) GML combos. Good remotes.
Sucks: almost everything has MOV 4-2 in Corregidor, few good HI, furries and bare-assed nuns

ARIADNA :scotland::hf::france::hf::ussr:
Rocks: very cheap troops so you’ll always outnumber your enemy, camo Tankhunters, cheap APHMGs, excellent infiltrators in Chasseurs (AVA 4 in sectorial!), can actually pull of CC-oriented tactics reliably, 99% of your stuff is hacking- and EMP-immune, artillery tankettes, Cameronians (hard as nails werewolves with smoke and 2 chain rifles)
Sucks: everything is low tech - plain rifles (no combis), no MSV2+, no TO camo (plenty of normal camo though), no hacking so you may be hosed if the enemy brings a GML, no TAGs/REMs, specialists don’t have helperbots. Furries.

ALEPH :awesomelon:
Rocks: Awesome tech, good remotes and TAG, synchronized bots, ODD/NWI out the wazoo, very tough units, many strong characters, Achilles is a human TAG, many link teams in sectorial, you’ll always resurrect your heroes in campaign
Sucks: Expensive points-wise, your link teams are limited to 4 members (can’t make a normal one at all!), sectorial has no infiltrators/camo, Cube 2.0 does not work against CA (in fact you'll autofail evac rolls)

CA :cthulhu:
Rocks: The best tech in the game. The best TAG in the game. The best warband in the game. HIs are equal to other factions’ TAGs. lots and lots of awesome specialists. Hard to kill. Very versatile. Permanently take over enemy units or deploy 1" behind their TAG and slice it into pieces. Reaction drones with mimetism, and monomines/plasma rifles. Batroids (actually well-armed defensive baggagebots)
Sucks: Very expensive points-wise. HI are priced like other factions’ TAGs :v: Sectorials have very defined specializations and are poor at what they don’t do. Overcosted line infantry. Speculo Killer may die horribly if the enemy does make the ARM roll. No "specialist" remotes (barring baggage ones)

TOHAA:turianass:
Rocks: Make lots of link teams even in vanilla. Link teams can be mixed (HI, engineer and HFT warband in one. Lots of flamers and viral weaponry. AVA 4 Neurocinetics! Symbiont armor grants a pseudo extra wound to many units. Excellent drop troop.
Sucks: All your link teams are limited to 3 members. Your symbiont units (including TAG) will die horribly if they fail even one ARM roll against fire. No active hacking to speak of. TAG seems lackluster (or did until Mulciber Gorgos-carped-bombed everyone last Gencon :v:)

I felt compelled.

For someone that has 30+ models in this system I have a fairly noob-ish question.

With regard to rules there is the core book and the free pdf, are these the same or is the pdf a stripped down version? Should I bother with the physical book? What is the Human Sphere book? Is it a pdf as well? Do I need it? The Paradiso Campaign. I assume there is no pdf. Is the book worth getting?

You can't do anything without orders, so it is very common to have a bunch of low cost troops to give you a decent orders pool to make your badass troops more effective. Not an absolute rule, but a very common occurrence.

I still have my GW stuff but I have yet to wargame at all since I have moved to the US. I might get around to playing 40k but I will definitely start with Infinity and/or possibly Necromunda. I plan to start an Infinity night at my FLGS. I like the shorter play times of skirmish games, 40K can just drag on sometimes and people who play Apocalypse are just insane in my opinion.

Step 1: Bring every vehicle model you own.
Step 2: Make the entire board a parking lot.
Step 3: Take your 45 minute turn and roll buckets of dice.
Step 4: Stand around while you opponent(s) takes their 45 minute turn.
Step 5: Repeat steps 3 & 4 until 8 hours have passed, or you have lost the will to live.

Sounds amazing.

In all honestly I've never fielded them. I bought 4 new, 2 used in a lot buy, and was given 4 more as a gift. For the most part I plan to paint them up so I can proxy them for minis I hate like the Wulvers.

I WON THIS AMAZING AVATAR! I'M A WINNER! WOOOOO!

Sephyr posted:

How did you make those? I printed out the tokens but never found a good, cost-efficient way to put them on bases or such.

I bought some 6mm Plexiglas, took it to my local fablab and made a cutting template for 26mm disks using Inkscape and then cut the disks.

The final disks are 25mm, you need to add 1mm for the kerf (a kerf being the material removed by the thing doing the cutting, a saw, a laser, whatever).

I printed out the images on a color printer:

http://imgur.com/WHSxNpO

http://imgur.com/YvEfZJI

http://imgur.com/mZlF1YW

http://imgur.com/SMKUElD

Then used a one inch circular scrap book punch to cut them out.

Easily obtained from your local craft store.

And while you are there pick up Aleene's Glass & Bead adhesive

and Liquitex sealer (I chose matte)

Once you have cut the Plexiglas and the paper punched, apply a thin even coat of the Aleene's glue to the plexi and carefully place the paper against it image side up. Now you have to firmly press them together to get a smooth bubble free join between the paper and the plexi. It will take you a couple of tokens to figure out your optimal amount of glue and how to best get out the air, but after that it is smooth (if repetitive) sailing. Allow the tokens to dry for a few hours then brush on the Liquitex sealer to the back. I only had three tokens "go bad" due to the paper getting saturated and wrinkling after applying the sealer, but even these "ruined" ones are usable for play, I just know they are a little wonky.

If you managed to get any glue on the faced of the token use Goof-off or an equivalent glue/tape residue remover to clean them up.

And that's about it. (FYI - The whole process is based on this tutorial http://www.notmartha.org/tomake/marblemagnets/)

If you don't have access to a fablab, you can buy pre-cut clear tokens from Litko or some other online retailer; but if you can make your own I would do so.

I have plans to make more of these for Necromunda, 40K and possibly Saga. They look great and are incredibly satisfying to make.

I'm in a similar position to HiveCommander so a lot of that was helpful, thanks.

What I wanted to ask was, how viable is it to base an Ariadna force around Kazaks? A while back I picked up a second-hand demo box that had two Line Kazaks with rifles, a Line Kazak with HMG, and a Veteran Kazak with HMG in it (all seem to now be discontinued). Now that a friend is starting to play I thought I'd get the Ariadna starter box and focus on a team that looks like it came out of the STALKER computer game.
Is that doable or do I have to include the kilt men and weird dog guys?

Also, is there any indication at all that the company are going to move away from the atrocious style that every female model seems to be in? Looking through the various ranges on the website there's a rather striking juxtaposition between awesome models of men, and frankly embarrassing models of women that I have no real interest in painting or using.

Some models just can't be fixed, but many can be saved from female-as-sex-object hell they are in through the application of a little green stuff and paint. Bare midriff annoying you? Greenstuff the bellybutton and paint a form fitting undershirt on the model.

Kazaks kick rear end and are a totally viable basis for an Ariadna force. Kilt men and dog guys are not required, but can be fun if you can get past your distaste for them. Add tank hunters, Assault drop troops, and some Traktor Muls (sp?) and you have a good kiltless/dogless army.
