They have a parking prawl in the transmission that locks it from turning, but it's not entirely meant to serve as the only mechanism keeping the car from moving. Perhaps people in the southern hemisphere are taught to use the park brake when parking. I know I was told to apply the brake before shifting an automatic vehicle out of D into P for the exact reason of stopping it touching the locker pawl. I still use it in a manual too. It seems weird having the car held only by the gear. We also don't salt the crap out of our roads.

Heres a Canadian image to make it work for you:  The inner lane has the option of turning left around the round-about or going straight. The right lane turns Right or can head straight. It works because people on the round-about have right of way meaning that if you wanted to you could drive around the circle in the inner lane for 5 minutes and people would still need to give way when you cross over their fronts.
