In California you can report smoking cars. I’m not sure that it results in anything more than a letter, though.

Road culture in the US states that any kind of signal, be it horn or high beams, is an aggressive insult. That's not hard and fast in all areas, like horns in NYC are completely meaningless, but in general any kind of signal is equivalent to flipping someone off.

Compare to someplace like the autobahn where flashing headlights is a useful warning that something really fast is coming up behind you. Slow car moves over, fast car blows by, no one's offended.

It really comes down to the same point as always: driver education in the US is loving garbage.

It’s a self‐reinforcing thing. Everyone knows that that’s how flashing headlights is perceived, so only dickheads flash headlights.

Whether or not it's legal, it's really not a good idea to exit an intersection in a different lane than the one you entered it in. A lot of people do it anyways, but it's better to be predictable and maintain your actual lane until you clear the intersection.

It’s highly predictable that cars making protected lefts will turn into any lane.

What’s less predictable is when idiots will disregard right‐of‐way and pull out in front me. For this reason I avoid drifting to an outer lane unless I need to turn right mid‐block, but I have zero sympathy for people turning right on red being surprised when others exercise their right of way.

It’s not just that people don’t know that non‐functional signals are supposed to be treated like stop signs.

The whole concept of a stop sign breaks down on multilane roads with any volume of traffic.

I know that the law says to merge into the bike lane, but I stopped doing that when too many drivers blew past me and almost sideswiped cars in the left lane.

If the shoulder is wide enough to entirely fit my car, I pull there before slowing down, but if there isn’t enough road surface to allow another vehicle to safely pass, I don’t let them try.

That's sure gonna suck when you right hook a cyclist and cause them serious injury. The risk of drivers doing something dumb outside of your control causing minor cosmetic damage is a lot less serious than the serious injury that will likely occur from a right hook.

Bike lane is empty for miles. No parked cars to hide behind. Unless a cyclist comes up behind me at supersonic speeds, there will be no hooking.

Bike lanes in my area are a joke. Many roads have them, but the city just stenciled some bikes in the gutter and called it good.

The bike lanes on arterials are not for the faint‐hearted. Most cyclists use the side streets (which have no bike lanes but do have slower, lighter traffic) or the arterial sidewalks, against traffic.

It was a dark and stormy night when I attempted to turn left from a stop sign and was t-boned by a vehicle without their lights on. Due to the dark and stormyness of the night I did not see them and therefore did not yield. My vehicle is likely totaled and theirs has significant damage as well. Fortunately there are no injuries beyond soreness.

The officer who responded told me that I am at fault even though they did not have headlights on. They told me that failure to yield is a worse violation than driving without lights. I was ticketed for failure to yield. I do not know if the other driver was ticketed. This does not make sense to me. How can I yield to something that I cannot see?

Do I have any chance of fighting the fault of the crash? How about the ticket?
