Road culture in the US states that any kind of signal, be it horn or high beams, is an aggressive insult. That's not hard and fast in all areas, like horns in NYC are completely meaningless, but in general any kind of signal is equivalent to flipping someone off.

Compare to someplace like the autobahn where flashing headlights is a useful warning that something really fast is coming up behind you. Slow car moves over, fast car blows by, no one's offended.

It really comes down to the same point as always: driver education in the US is loving garbage.

Whether or not it's legal, it's really not a good idea to exit an intersection in a different lane than the one you entered it in. A lot of people do it anyways, but it's better to be predictable and maintain your actual lane until you clear the intersection.

That's sure gonna suck when you right hook a cyclist and cause them serious injury. The risk of drivers doing something dumb outside of your control causing minor cosmetic damage is a lot less serious than the serious injury that will likely occur from a right hook.

It was a dark and stormy night when I attempted to turn left from a stop sign and was t-boned by a vehicle without their lights on. Due to the dark and stormyness of the night I did not see them and therefore did not yield. My vehicle is likely totaled and theirs has significant damage as well. Fortunately there are no injuries beyond soreness.

The officer who responded told me that I am at fault even though they did not have headlights on. They told me that failure to yield is a worse violation than driving without lights. I was ticketed for failure to yield. I do not know if the other driver was ticketed. This does not make sense to me. How can I yield to something that I cannot see?

Do I have any chance of fighting the fault of the crash? How about the ticket?

Some cars I've seen have the dashboard indicators/controls illuminated only when the lights are on, so if you are driving in low-light conditions it becomes very obvious very fast when you can't see poo poo inside your car. Some places are lit up enough by ambient/street lighting that it's probably genuinely possible to mistake not having your external lights on.
