Not only does my stepdad refuse to use his parking brake, he generally slams it into park while the vehicle is still moving (no matter which vehicle he's driving or who it belongs to). Usually results in the vehicle bouncing back and forth a bit, sometimes a CLACKCLACKCLACKCLACKCLACKSCREEEEEEEEEEEECH:gonk: if he's going fast enough, and a few times now, CLACKCLACKCLACKSNAPcrunchrattlecrunch:wtc: (followed very shortly by a very expensive bill and him bitching about how cars aren't built like they used to be).

You'd think he'd figure it out after averaging a transmission every 1-2 years from the 80s until about 2000, and about one every 5 years since then. :downsgun: He's only had one last long enough to actually wear out, the rest all had the parking prawl snap.

I can always tell when someone doesn't use their parking brake because their vehicle lurches forward every so often as the engine is slowly turned by the wheels. Usually it's a car but I saw a roadwork / construction truck parked near me lurching forward recently.

The majority of cars here are automatic, even medium size trucks. They have a parking prawl in the transmission that locks it from turning, but it's not entirely meant to serve as the only mechanism keeping the car from moving.

You must have some crazy steep hills and/or people who park in a higher gear; the only time I've had a car roll in 1st or reverse was when I was driving a friend's extremely tired Ford Escort (mid 80s Escort, the odometer broke after it rolled over for the third time, they estimated over 400k miles on the original engine.. compression was pretty close to "what compression?" on that engine - original owner to boot).

My first vehicle (1980 Ford F-150) had it on the dash. I... think stepdad's F-150 (2001) has it that way too, I'm not in it often enough to really remember though.

Everything else I've owned has had it on the indicator stalk. One thing that bugs me about my current car is the headlights default to automatic. You can turn off the automatic lights, but you have to do so every loving time you start the engine.

OTOH, the fog lights have to be turned on every time you start the engine if you want to keep them on - they shut off after you shut off the engine, and don't come back on until you hit the switch again. I kind of like that; I also like that it'll let you turn on the fogs without turning on the headlights (though the parking/dash lights do turn on). Pretty useful when the fog is closer to soup.

A lot of cars (mine included) put a 3-5 second delay in if you hit the lock button with the door open. As in, they won't lock until 3-5 seconds after the last door has been closed (they usually make some kind of noise from the dash too, mine dings 3 times). Some cars will let you bypass that by hitting the button 2 or 3 times.

My keyfob works the same way. I can see the logic behind that when it's the drivers door that's open, but when it's the passenger door... :iiam:

I love the ergonomics of all the controls except for the windshield wiper on/off. It's up for one temporary cycle, down one for 1st speed constant on, down two for 2nd speed constant on. There is no intermittent speed at all and it drives me crazy when it is raining just enough to not need the wipers constantly on but raining just hard enough where otherwise I would have to constantly hit the wipers up to clear the small amount of rain.

GM started doing the "retained accessory power" in the.. early 90s, I think, originally on their luxury cars. I seem to remember mom's old 1990 Cadillac having that, and I know the 1992 she replaced it with after it got wrecked had it. They do it on pretty much everything now, even their economy cars.

For 10 minutes (or until a door is opened), the radio stays on, power windows still work, sunroof still works... and oddly, if the wipers were left on the high speed setting when the car was shut off, they also stay on (on my car, anyway). But only on high. :psyduck:

There's an automatic headlight turn off circuit, but it's to keep the battery from running low - after 10 or 15 minutes the headlights will shut off. Same with interior lights if a door was left open, trunk light, etc. The headlights are otherwise automatic on mine (including daytime running lights).

I've had a couple of cars with intermittent wipers that didn't let you adjust the delay. So far I've only had one vehicle that didn't have intermittents at all, but it was a 1980 with a bigass knob on the dash for the wipers.

since the US has a DRL requirement and most of europe didn't (doesn't?) Volvo decided that instead of fitting another bulb for DRLs inside the headlamp assembly they would swap the high beams out for DRLs and motorize the standard beams to sweep upward for high beams and downward for low beams. As a result I have awful high beams. You can get euro-spec headlights that fix the problem but they cost over $1000 EACH (the S60R's headlights are glass) and are apparently a real bitch to install.

On a related note, there really needs to be a law against raising vehicles and not adjusting the headlights accordingly. For that matter, most stock SUVs and pickups seem to have their headlights pointed directly in my back window, while my headlights barely kiss the bumper of someone 20 feet in front of me.

But the US doesn't require DRLs anywhere in the country (about half of the states do require them on motorcycles, or otherwise require riders to keep their headlights on while riding). Sweden, on the other hand (you know, where your Volvo was at least designed), requires that cars either have DRLs or be driven with the headlights on at all times. GM in particular has lobbied really hard to get DRLs onto American cars, but more so that they don't have to build different electrical systems for cars exported to Canada (Canada has required DRLs since 1990, at least on cars built after 1/1/90 - it saves GM money to build to one standard).

I got nothing about the sweep you mention though - I assume you have factory HIDs if you have that?

And most (all?) states do have laws on the books about headlight aim, which also applies to lifted vehicles. Not really enforced in most states unfortunately. Some states have specific guidelines for lifted vehicles (I think Texas does).

Front fogs OR low beams. Not both. And certainly never front fogs at the same time as high beams, that's even more idiotic.

Every car I've driven with factory fogs (except for the one I own now) don't let you run the fogs without the low beams (but they do switch off with the high beams). It was easy to change the wiring on my Integra to allow the fogs to be turned on without the low beams though (factory wiring only powered the fog light switch with the low beams - snip that wire, splice the wire to the dash lighting switch, which would let you run the fogs anytime the parking lights were on).

The car I have now has automatic lights, but if you turn on the fogs, then bump the headlight switch from auto to off (momentary switch for the off position), the fogs and parking lights stay on. Same happens if you tap the fog light switch when none of the lights are on - parking lights come on, fog lights come on, headlights don't come on - though if you do it in that order, the headlights eventually do turn on automatically when it gets dark enough.

And like smoke mentioned, my fog lights won't turn on without hitting the switch - even if they were on when I parked. I didn't like that when I first got the car, but now it makes me think before I blind people.

Some GMs with automatic headlights have an "Auto Off" position on the headlight switch, though it's a momentary contact position. I can turn the switch to "auto off" when I start the car, and the DRLs stay off (as do the automatic headlghts). You have to cycle it every time you start the car. Lower trim versions don't have automatic headlights (AFAIK anyway), I'm not sure how you turn off the DRLs on those (there's no dome override switch on this model - each interior light has its own switch, much like Nissans and Hondas).

My Saturn just runs the front turn signals for the DRLs though (bright filament in a 4157NA bulb); there's absolutely no mistaking it for any form of lighting at night.

This is on a 2006 Saturn Ion (which is basically a Cobalt in drag); I believe all Ions worked like this. I'm not sure how the Cobalt handles DRLs to be honest..

Police (if they show up to the accident - they won't if there's no injuries in a lot of bigger cities) will generally be very interested in the video, if you have a way to play it back. Even the cheaper cameras usually have an LCD on them; otherwise, many of them use micro SD (the ones that use SD... get a micro SD card and use the [usually included] adapter?), so if you have a phone with a micro SD slot, you can probably play it back on the spot. Build quality is a bit... flimsy (as every review points out), but it has excellent picture quality, even at night. If your power socket is switched, it can also be configured to start recording immediately when you start the car, and stop <X minutes> after turning off the car. Power cord is hilariously long.

For $52, it's great, but it doesn't actually have "night vision" (it has a bright white LED on the front if you enable the "IR LED"). I can live with that.

I wound up buying the cheapest card I could find at a drug store before work, just so I could use it (oddly, the 8GB card was much cheaper than some 4GB cards they had). $15 + tax..

... ordered a 32GB card from Amazon when I got home. Should be here Thursday. :20bux:

That video was actually taken on one of my deliveries (hence the guard waving me through with no more than a "hey how you doing?" - I'm in that neighborhood often enough that they know me). I was hoping to also upload a daytime video, but as it turns out, when you're recording at 1080p with audio, an 8GB card fills up really fast. All the daytime stuff got overwritten pretty quick - each 3 minute clip is between 250-350 MB.

And yeah, for $52, it's a fantastic camera. Decent mount, super long cable on the power adapter (ran it around the headliner, around the front passenger door, and dropped it to the floor between the front and back doors, to have it plug into the rear power outlet - the rear one switches on/off with the car, the front is always on), just make sure you disable the "IR LED" in the settings if you don't want a glaring white LED shining. The UI takes some getting used to as well, the firmware is clearly carried over from a different model (and as such, some buttons don't quite do what you expect). If you plug it into a switched outlet, you can program how long it stays on after you shut off the car. Supposedly. I have it set to 3 minutes, it seems to shut off after 1. Still long enough to capture parking/exiting anyway.

I haven't played with the settings much yet.

I have it mounted so that I can't really see it while driving (and I have it set to turn off the display after a minute).

I'll probably get a black sharpie and black out the "flash" and the trim around the lens. Ideally I'd like to mount it a bit higher so that the suction mount isn't visible, but I don't see how I'm going to do that in a non-permanent way. Right now the power cord is tucked under the edge of the headliner, then run above the passenger door, and drops down to the floor where the b pillar would be (if it had a b pillar). Need to figure out something a little less tacky.

Caught a near miss (for me - the car behind me wasn't so lucky) with it today. Grand Marquis stopped in the left lane of 75, then cut across 3 lanes of traffic, the shoulder, the grass, and the access road. It looked like he decided "I'm going to turn into Costco from the middle of a highway!". He didn't even flinch when the car behind me tagged him, just kept going.

I'm no good at editing video, I tried to trim it down to just the relevant parts and apparently cut off a bit too much (like 13 inch). Still gives a good idea of Mr Costco and his red Panther.

There's nothing stopping you from pulling the files to your computer and pausing the video long enough to do screenshots, though mine is capable of doing stills OR video. I don't think it can pull stills out of video by itself.

How are these dash cams wired? Do you run a wire through the headliner to a cigarette lighter socket somewhere?

The majority of them are powered via mini USB or micro USB, so yeah, you need either a socket or some form of switched 5VDC. Mine came with a lighter adapter with a hilariously long cord - it was long enough to tuck into the head liner, run above the passenger door, and plug into the back seat lighter socket (the front one is always live, the back is switched, because GM is a special snowflake) with a few extra feet.

If you don't have a switched socket somewhere (or a way to add on), you have to start/stop recording manually. Most of them allow you to program them to automatically start/stop with the car if you have a switched socket (and they usually have a small internal battery to allow them to record an extra 30+ seconds after power is lost - also giving them time to flush the recording to the SD card).

I'll eventually find a way to hide all of the wiring - it'll probably require wiring a socket under a seat and plugging the charger into that, then running the 5V wire behind panels. I don't want to bury a cheap charger behind the dash, at least putting it under a seat will make it easy to swap when it inevitably fails.

So if you, say, get pulled over in a two party consent state, and leave it recording.. with audio... you could be in some legal trouble. There's apparently been a lot of people arrested for this.

Texas is a one party consent state, but I think I'm still going to keep an extra memory card handy. Partly to prevent anything good from being overwritten, partly for :tinfoil:

If you want to see how well the G1W handles very low light - I got caught in a nasty storm last night, bad enough that the power for most of the city went out. Only illumination for most of it was my headlights + hazards (hazards since I was doing 20-25 on a 50 mph road with little visibility). Mostly low beam headlights + fog lights, tried high beams once or twice in the video.

Fair warning, turn your speakers down if you're at work or have kids around. You can sort of hear me cussing over the rain, brief hail, radio, and defogger.

This. I have a 32GB card in mine, and even at 1080p with audio, I can fit an entire (busy) delivery shift on it before it starts overwriting. Looking at mine now, the oldest video is from the 25th around 7pm, newest is 2:30am today (27th). Doing some quick math based on the # of files on the (full) card, it looks like 32GB will hold about 5-6 hours of video at 1080p w/audio (assuming some of those files are cut short by short trips).

It claims to have a g sensor - I'm not sure what it takes to set it off though. I've managed to have it fall off the windshield and slam itself into the passenger door, and it didn't do anything (tried to mount it to the tinted part of the windshield, but it's tinted with a dot matrix pattern of some sort, so it fell off after a few miles). I have it set to 3 minutes. And until yesterday, I thought there was a 1/2 second gap or so between the files - turns out there's about a 1/4 second overlap instead (this is a good thing).

The G1W also seems to lack at least one button that the firmware is looking for during playback, while another is mislabeled (apparently "REC" is actually "OK"). That's.. not a big surprise to me. You can still use every feature in it, you just get to stumble through the menus a bit until you figure it out.

When people do this and I'm on an uphill incline I like to roll back in neutral, so they think I don't know how to hill start and the honking usually stops right away.

If I roll back more than a few inches, I usually get a nonstop horn for several seconds. Then again, it's pretty flat here. I've had someone lay on their horn for rolling back about 2 inches, then road rage for the next couple of miles. :wtc:

I don't know anything about the almost-stalling-but-not-quite-stalling starts or the shifts-that-make-the-whole-car-jerk-violently (followed by "accelerate like a 240D") when someone is being a complete douchecannon. :unsmith:

WA has right-on-red which leads to a LOT of hilarity and poor decisions. Especially when it involves an intersection with a no-right-on-red sign. Theres a few in Seattle with incredibly visible signs that like clockwork get me honked at every time because I actually obey the law.

TX also has right on red unless posted (you can also turn left on red if both streets are one way, unless posted). There's an intersection I'm at pretty often that has four no right on red signs posted. I still get honked at pretty often there (there is absolutely zero visibility to turn unless you're halfway into a lane at that intersection). The only real rear end in a top hat I've run into there sat on his horn for about 15 seconds until I got out of the car and pointed at all 4 of the signs. At least I got a half assed "sorry" wave from him.. :fuckoff:

How about sharing the road with dogs?

Is there any real interest in a dashcam thread, or at least a "I caught this stupid poo poo on a dashcam" thread? It seems like several of us are either in the process of obtaining a dashcam, or already obtained one.

I found an odd bug in mine - it decided to reset itself to 00:00 / 1/1/2013 last night. No obvious reason, it just went "gently caress you". I only noticed it when I glanced at it and saw that it was recording a 00:03 timestamp at 9pm (I can't even see it from the drivers seat, since it's behind my rearview mirror, I just happened to glance at it while trying to grab something off the passenger seat) . Sort of makes me wonder if it has a DST bug of some sort.

I swear, every time I use this loving intersection, someone either runs the N/W light and nearly t-bones me, or E/W decides "oh green light, that means I can pull out in front of oncoming traffic even when they're obviously going straight".

":wtf: Lady!" didn't even look my way despite the horn and tire squeals (and her windows were open, there's no way she didn't hear horn + squealing tires), and the Lexus behind her was obviously trying to follow her through the intersection. The E/W direction does not have any form of protected turn, it's either green, or turn right on red. Nothing else.

The best part: I've come drat close to t-boning several cops at this intersection. There's a police substation next door to the library (and I'm at the library 2-3x a week). You'd think the city would at least hang a "No protected turn" sign or some poo poo, since there's an assload of accidents at that intersection... IIRC it's on the top 10 list of intersections w/accidents for the whole city. :sigh:

Before you bark about speed - I was doing a little over 20 when I hit the intersection. Posted speed limit is 30.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2cpZmbwQdg

When I'm doing delivery, the intersection in the next clip is a serious pain in the rear end. It goes from 3 lanes when you're headed east to 5 lanes at the light (and one of the 3 lanes starts about 250 ft before the intersection) - there is literally no legal way to change into the turning lanes (TX doesn't allow lane changes in an intersection). I usually grab the inside lane if I can, as the turning lanes are striped to give me 2 lanes to choose from. This is one of those "3-10x a week" things for me at this loving intersection. So far I've had two hit and runs at this intersection before I had a cam, thankfully both were minor enough that it was just some scuffing.

I only got around to fixing the clock a few hours ago, everything I've posted in the past week is an hour into the future

I think you're overreacting a tad bit there, unless there's danger I'm not seeing in the video. He's maybe doing 110. On a nearly empty, well-lit freeway, with plenty of visibility. In conditions like those I will have no problem with passing or being passed deep into triple digits and think nothing of it.

2:30 AM on a Saturday night. Safe to say he was likely pretty buzzed, at the least. When I saw him coming up behind me he was all over the road, though you couldn't really see that in the video. There was a decent amount of traffic for the hour (just not in that particular clip).

I still think that's way over 110 though - I was doing between 85-90. There's no way that's a 25 mph difference. :stare:

That said, the tollway is generally devoid of much in the way of traffic enforcement when you're south of SH 121 - most sections (including that one) are only patrolled by state troopers.

About 30 seconds later I came up on a nasty rollover accident, though that Lexus was in no way involved (there was already a state trooper on scene, fire trucks were coming up behind me when I passed it). I really hate driving home late at night on a Friday or Saturday just because of all the drunks :sigh:

Yeah if I am driving super late and have the freeway almost to myself like that I will occasionally drive at simliar speeds (for realitively short periods where I "know" police are not lurking).

I think everyone should be fastidious. One of my good buddies trashes his car. At any given time there is trash bags/soda cups laying around the floor of his car, and he hasn't exactly had shitboxes - his last car was a 2004 Outback and his current one is a 2007 Mazda3. I'm like, when you're going to sell this, you're going to have a lot of fun cleaning or replacing the upholstery on your rear seats and getting new carpeting on your floors. Or you could just take care of your car.

In my car, I have some paper and pens in the center console, manual in the passenger side door cubby, registration and insurance in the glove compartment, ice scraper in the back seat, and in the trunk I have an emergency first aid kit, tools, and a repair guide for my car. Nice, easy, practical, especially whenever I'll inevitably need on-site roadside repair.

When I'm working several days back to back, the passenger side footwell gets cluttered with a bunch of delivery tickets. Sometimes something fast food too.

I try to clean the car out before each shift (or after, if it's one of the rare shifts when I don't close). When I'm not working, car records + manual + insurance in the glove box, trunk has basic tools, center console keeps an extra pair of glasses + pens + flashlight.

I can forgive dirtiness in your case because you actually try to clean. My buddy's just like, "well, done with my McGriddle" and throws the wrapper down in his passenger side.

That's exactly what I meant by the fast food line, actually. :v:

But it does get removed - not always the same day, but within a day or two. I try to vacuum the interior at least twice a month as well. Having black floor mats helps hide any stains. :v:

At one time I was very much like your buddy though - my cars always had trashed interiors, smelled horrible, tons of stains, etc. Started turning that around with my last Accord, then kept the Altima fairly clean. I keep the dash and seats of the Ion clean enough to eat off of.

There's still a few things that could probably be removed - I have a stereo mounting kit that's sitting in the trunk waiting for me to get an aftermarket stereo, along with an antenna adapter. Window shade lives in the trunk when it's not summer, ice scraper/snow brush lives back there year round. Stuff that just seems like it should stay in the car if I don't want it to get lost, even if I'm not using it anytime soon. :v:

This is the only one that pissed me off yesterday. Well, last night, on my way home. The whole "I'm gonna nail the brakes, then swerve back into the road and force other cars to hit their brakes while I'm making a left turn when I have my very own lane! :downs:" bit got under my skin.

Not the worst thing out there by far, of course. If this is the worst thing I can bitch about, then it's been a really good day.

Might want to turn your volume down a bit unless you like 30 Seconds To Mars at high volumes...

I rode from San Antonio to Austin one time, doing 90 in a 70 in a rented Mustang convertible with the top down, following a state trooper who didn't seem to have anywhere he needed to be but didn't want that slowing him down any. Made me wish more places could be like that.

The last time I drove back from Austin, I had the cruise set at 90 most of the way back to DFW, except through Waco.

Three goddamn times, I looked in my mirror and saw a statie hauling rear end behind me and catching up really fast. Thought for sure I was getting a ticket, so I moved to the right lane and was ready to pull over. Every time, the trooper blew past me like I was standing still. Different people each time, so it's not like I blew past them again once they'd stopped. No lights or siren, they just had to be somewhere I guess. :iiam:

I had someone sitting so close today that I couldn't even see their hood. A small chunk of their windshield was also invisible.

Because tailgating me is really going to make the person in front of me going under the speed limit go faster, right? Especially when every other lane is going much slower than the lane I'm already in.

They didn't take any hints when I downshifted several times, just crawled further up my muffler. They finally took a hint after 3 brake checks - then zoomed around me only to get caught behind someone going even slower. It was amusing watching them zig zag between lanes trying to pass me, except they fell further and further back every time they changed lanes. I was in the left lane, but it was still the fastest moving lane (at 55 in a 60), so... :smuggo:

Most people out here treat the speed limit as the absolute top speed, unlike every other place in the US where it's treated as the minimum. El Paso actually posts minimum speed signs on I-10 (45 mph), and I still see several cars going way under the minimum every time I hit the highway. I found myself behind a pickup doing less than 30 in the middle lane of I-10 tonight... :sigh: The upside is my MPG should be much higher while I'm out here, since there's no way I'll ever break 65.

On my way back to DFW, there was a douchenozzle cutting people off, flashing high beams at everyone (even in the right lane :psypop: ).. if you tried to pass someone she'd whip out behind you and ride your bumper, no matter how fast you were going. Then she made the mistake of cutting off several big trucks, then stopped flashing her high beams - she just left them on instead. :downsgun:

I don't know why someone would be driving like this in the rain, especially so close to freezing. But seeing her get boxed in by two big trucks up front, and one big truck in the back (with high beams + fogs lit up in her mirrors, rear truck straddling both lanes) made me laugh my rear end off.

Complete road rage by the truckers, but this is one time where I'll say it was well deserved. :haw:

I haven't had any issues with recordings on my camera, despite having the cheapest SanDisk 32GB class 4 card in it. I wasn't sure if it'd be able to keep up with camera, but it seems to do just fine.

What I have had issues with is it losing the time/date seemingly at random. Happened 3 times so far; noticed it the third time tonight, and apparently it's been that way for at least 3 days :sigh: (showing Jan 3rd). Hasn't lost any other settings.

I may just wind up turning off the date/time stamp.
