I can see the logic behind that when it's the drivers door that's open, but when it's the passenger door...

Same with interior lights if a door was left open, trunk light, etc. The headlights are otherwise automatic on mine (including daytime running lights). I've had a couple of cars with intermittent wipers that didn't let you adjust the delay. So far I've only had one vehicle that didn't have intermittents at all, but it was a 1980 with a bigass knob on the dash for the wipers. I got nothing about the sweep you mention though - I assume you have factory HIDs if you have that? And most (all?) states do have laws on the books about headlight aim, which also applies to lifted vehicles. Not really enforced in most states unfortunately. And like smoke mentioned, my fog lights won't turn on without hitting the switch - even if they were on when I parked. I didn't like that when I first got the car, but now it makes me think before I blind people.

Lower trim versions don't have automatic headlights (AFAIK anyway), I'm not sure how you turn off the DRLs on those (there's no dome override switch on this model - each interior light has its own switch, much like Nissans and Hondas). My Saturn just runs the front turn signals for the DRLs though (bright filament in a 4157NA bulb); there's absolutely no mistaking it for any form of lighting at night. This is on a 2006 Saturn Ion (which is basically a Cobalt in drag); I believe all Ions worked like this. I still keep them working, and I've noticed the Avalon will light up the "brake lamp" warning light on the dash if the center bulb is out.

The G1W, from this particular seller. Took about a week and a half to get from China to Texas. Build quality is a bit... flimsy (as every review points out), but it has excellent picture quality, even at night. If your power socket is switched, it can also be configured to start recording immediately when you start the car, and stop <X minutes> after turning off the car. Power cord is hilariously long. For $52, it's great, but it doesn't actually have "night vision" (it has a bright white LED on the front if you enable the "IR LED"). I can live with that.

I wound up buying the cheapest card I could find at a drug store before work, just so I could use it (oddly, the 8GB card was much cheaper than some 4GB cards they had). $15 + tax.. ... ordered a 32GB card from Amazon when I got home. Should be here Thursday.  That video was actually taken on one of my deliveries (hence the guard waving me through with no more than a "hey how you doing?" - I'm in that neighborhood often enough that they know me). I was hoping to also upload a daytime video, but as it turns out, when you're recording at 1080p with audio, an 8GB card fills up really fast. All the daytime stuff got overwritten pretty quick - each 3 minute clip is between 250-350 MB. And yeah, for $52, it's a fantastic camera. Decent mount, super long cable on the power adapter (ran it around the headliner, around the front passenger door, and dropped it to the floor between the front and back doors, to have it plug into the rear power outlet - the rear one switches on/off with the car, the front is always on), just make sure you disable the "IR LED" in the settings if you don't want a glaring white LED shining. The UI takes some getting used to as well, the firmware is clearly carried over from a different model (and as such, some buttons don't quite do what you expect). If you plug it into a switched outlet, you can program how long it stays on after you shut off the car. Supposedly. I have it set to 3 minutes, it seems to shut off after 1. Still long enough to capture parking/exiting anyway. I haven't played with the settings much yet.

Mine lets you shut off audio (and it seems a good chunk of the dashcam videos on youtube/liveleak also shut off audio). I haven't done a comparison of file size with and without audio, but all it's really going to catch is me listening to NPR, blasting metal, or cussing my head off when someone pulls out in front of me anyway. There's nothing stopping you from pulling the files to your computer and pausing the video long enough to do screenshots, though mine is capable of doing stills OR video. Most of them allow you to program them to automatically start/stop with the car if you have a switched socket (and they usually have a small internal battery to allow them to record an extra 30+ seconds after power is lost - also giving them time to flush the recording to the SD card). I'll eventually find a way to hide all of the wiring - it'll probably require wiring a socket under a seat and plugging the charger into that, then running the 5V wire behind panels. Actually now that I'm digging around a bit on the legality, some states require everyone involved in a conversation to know that audio recording is happening. So if you, say, get pulled over in a two party consent state, and leave it recording.. with audio... you could be in some legal trouble. There's apparently been a lot of people arrested for this. Texas is a one party consent state, but I think I'm still going to keep an extra memory card handy. Partly to prevent anything good from being overwritten, partly for

If you want to see how well the G1W handles very low light - I got caught in a nasty storm last night, bad enough that the power for most of the city went out. Only illumination for most of it was my headlights + hazards (hazards since I was doing 20-25 on a 50 mph road with little visibility). Mostly low beam headlights + fog lights, tried high beams once or twice in the video. Fair warning, turn your speakers down if you're at work or have kids around. You can sort of hear me cussing over the rain, brief hail, radio, and defogger. It claims to have a g sensor - I'm not sure what it takes to set it off though. I've managed to have it fall off the windshield and slam itself into the passenger door, and it didn't do anything (tried to mount it to the tinted part of the windshield, but it's tinted with a dot matrix pattern of some sort, so it fell off after a few miles). It has a few settings for sensitivity, I haven't looked into it yet. At least I got a half assed "sorry" wave from him..

How about sharing the road with dogs? Is there any real interest in a dashcam thread, or at least a "I caught this stupid poo poo on a dashcam" thread? It seems like several of us are either in the process of obtaining a dashcam, or already obtained one. I found an odd bug in mine - it decided to reset itself to 00:00 / 1/1/2013 last night. No obvious reason, it just went "gently caress you". I only noticed it when I glanced at it and saw that it was recording a 00:03 timestamp at 9pm (I can't even see it from the drivers seat, since it's behind my rearview mirror, I just happened to glance at it while trying to grab something off the passenger seat) . Sort of makes me wonder if it has a DST bug of some sort.

I swear, every time I use this loving intersection, someone either runs the N/W light and nearly t-bones me, or E/W decides "oh green light, that means I can pull out in front of oncoming traffic even when they're obviously going straight". "  Lady!" didn't even look my way despite the horn and tire squeals (and her windows were open, there's no way she didn't hear horn + squealing tires), and the Lexus behind her was obviously trying to follow her through the intersection. The E/W direction does not have any form of protected turn, it's either green, or turn right on red. Nothing else.The best part: I've come drat close to t-boning several cops at this intersection. There's a police substation next door to the library (and I'm at the library 2-3x a week). You'd think the city would at least hang a "No protected turn" sign or some poo poo, since there's an assload of accidents at that intersection... IIRC it's on the top 10 list of intersections w/accidents for the whole city.  Before you bark about speed - I was doing a little over 20 when I hit the intersection. It goes from 3 lanes when you're headed east to 5 lanes at the light (and one of the 3 lanes starts about 250 ft before the intersection) - there is literally no legal way to change into the turning lanes (TX doesn't allow lane changes in an intersection). I usually grab the inside lane if I can, as the turning lanes are striped to give me 2 lanes to choose from. This is one of those "3-10x a week" things for me at this loving intersection. At one time I was very much like your buddy though - my cars always had trashed interiors, smelled horrible, tons of stains, etc. Started turning that around with my last Accord, then kept the Altima fairly clean. I keep the dash and seats of the Ion clean enough to eat off of. There's still a few things that could probably be removed - I have a stereo mounting kit that's sitting in the trunk waiting for me to get an aftermarket stereo, along with an antenna adapter. Window shade lives in the trunk when it's not summer, ice scraper/snow brush lives back there year round. Stuff that just seems like it should stay in the car if I don't want it to get lost, even if I'm not using it anytime soon.

That's the video I was trying to post originally, but I couldn't find it. This is the only one that pissed me off yesterday. Well, last night, on my way home. The whole "I'm gonna nail the brakes, then swerve back into the road and force other cars to hit their brakes while I'm making a left turn when I have my very own lane!  " bit got under my skin.Not the worst thing out there by far, of course. If this is the worst thing I can bitch about, then it's been a really good day. Different people each time, so it's not like I blew past them again once they'd stopped. No lights or siren, they just had to be somewhere I guess.

I had someone sitting so close today that I couldn't even see their hood. A small chunk of their windshield was also invisible. Because tailgating me is really going to make the person in front of me going under the speed limit go faster, right? Especially when every other lane is going much slower than the lane I'm already in. They didn't take any hints when I downshifted several times, just crawled further up my muffler. They finally took a hint after 3 brake checks - then zoomed around me only to get caught behind someone going even slower. It was amusing watching them zig zag between lanes trying to pass me, except they fell further and further back every time they changed lanes. I was in the left lane, but it was still the fastest moving lane (at 55 in a 60), so...  Most people out here treat the speed limit as the absolute top speed, unlike every other place in the US where it's treated as the minimum. El Paso actually posts minimum speed signs on I-10 (45 mph), and I still see several cars going way under the minimum every time I hit the highway. I found myself behind a pickup doing less than 30 in the middle lane of I-10 tonight... The upside is my MPG should be much higher while I'm out here, since there's no way I'll ever break 65.

On my way back to DFW, there was a douchenozzle cutting people off, flashing high beams at everyone (even in the right lane  ).. if you tried to pass someone she'd whip out behind you and ride your bumper, no matter how fast you were going. Then she made the mistake of cutting off several big trucks, then stopped flashing her high beams - she just left them on instead. I don't know why someone would be driving like this in the rain, especially so close to freezing. But seeing her get boxed in by two big trucks up front, and one big truck in the back (with high beams + fogs lit up in her mirrors, rear truck straddling both lanes) made me laugh my rear end off. Complete road rage by the truckers, but this is one time where I'll say it was well deserved.

I haven't had any issues with recordings on my camera, despite having the cheapest SanDisk 32GB class 4 card in it. I wasn't sure if it'd be able to keep up with camera, but it seems to do just fine. What I have had issues with is it losing the time/date seemingly at random. Happened 3 times so far; noticed it the third time tonight, and apparently it's been that way for at least 3 days (showing Jan 3rd). Hasn't lost any other settings.I may just wind up turning off the date/time stamp.
