So, the old B-League thread has gone on for over 9 months, and during that time Bellator has slowly ascended to the level of a B+ League, and Strikeforce has been dead since about January. Thus it's time for a new B-League thread. Yuriy was originally going to do this but he's banned at the moment, so apparently that task falls on me. Because apparently the Rapture was due to come before someone else would make a B-League thread. Or at least, the stuff I'd already written up for it would be falling out of date. The stuff not written by me will be properly attributed. This OP is subject to updates and is a work in progress. If you're short on time, this is Rolles Gracie summing up 90% of B-League MMA in a nutshell: Yuriy posted:IT'S TIME for MMA that is too awful to be in the UFC! Yuriy's laptop died at this point. I'd written up stuff on some of the other major promotions, but as for finishing the WSoF stuff right this moment, well Welterweight
Lightweight
Featherweight
Bantamweight
Women's Divisions "Coming Soon" (all 5 divisions, which I don't really expect to exist ever but whatever). ________________________________________________________________________________________________ Invicta Fighting Championships Invicta Fighting Championships was founded in 2012 by former Strikeforce/IFL/Affliction/UFC executive Shannon Knapp and matchmaker Janet Martin as an all-women's promotion. While not the first such promotion, it is by far the most ambitious. It currently houses just over half of the 50 fighters listed in the WMMA Unified Rankings (28/50 under contract by my count), including the #1 fighters in the world at Womens Featherweight, Flyweight, and Atomweight. With Bellator having recently shuttered its womens divisions, they may yet grab several more Top 10 Flyweights and Strawweights, having already picked up Felice Herrig. Thus far Invicta has held six events on a quarterly schedule, with the most recent event airing on PPV and iPPV for $15. They've managed to convert a lot of MMA fans into WMMA fans, by showcasing many of the women fighters in the world in some badass fights. Check out Thug Rose Namajunas vs. Tecia Torres for a recent example. Many of Invicta's fights from Invicta 1-4 (before they were on stable PPV) are available on their current and older YouTube channels. One major problem is the sheer depth of their roster is making it impossible for them to properly showcase everyone with cards only four times a year, even with 12-14 fights a card. As there appears to be entreaties from Showtime and other television networks, hopefully Invicta can get on television by the start of 2014. So far, Shannon Knapp, who had television offers since the very first show, appears to be holding out for the deal that doesn't strip her of creative control. Champions and Divisions: Featherweight (145 lbs.) Champion: Cristiane "Cyborg" Justino (11-1, 1 NC) (World #1 Featherweight) Top Contenders: #1 Marloes "Rumina" Coenen , #2 Ediane Gomes , #3 Julia Budd Overview: Of the five competitive WMMA divisions, this is the thinnest, and Invicta has single-handedly kept it relevant. Despite this, some top prospects are actually just being shoe-horned into it, and Invicta is actually looking to add a Lightweight division in the long-term, using Featherweight as a springboard, presumably in hopes that if there is a stage for women at that weight to display their skills, more will be attracted to the sport. It's also a division that the UFC wouldn't be looking to scoop up anytime soon, the way they've grabbed most of the Bantamweight talent and scooped up a bunch of top Flyweights in the process. Nevertheless, Invicta basically owns this division right now, with the top 4 fighters in the world under contract and 6 of the top 10, including the only real contender to Ronda Rousey's claim as the Baddest Woman on Earth, the very scary Cris Cyborg. Bantamweight (135 lbs.) Champion: TBD Top Contenders: #1 Lauren Taylor , #2 Sarah D'Alelio , #3 Miriam Nakamoto Overview: While Invicta has world #9 and #10 BWs Lauren Taylor and Sarah D'Alelio in addition to a few really good prospects, the UFC has almost everything else including the rest of the Top 10. Earlier in their existence Zuffa lent Invicta some of their female Strikeforce fighters in a mutually beneficially arrangement, but that appears to be over now. Shannon Knapp has stated publicly that they're waiting for The Ultimate Fighter 18 to play out so they know who they can sign before crowning a Bantamweight Champion, although Lauren Taylor appears to have secured herself a spot in the Inaugural Bantamweight Title match. I presume following TUF 18 they may also pick up some natural Flyweights and Featherweights who made the show but don't end up in the UFC. TUF 18 actually stripped Invicta of quite a bit of their talent as Knapp let anyone who wanted to leave do so since she is not an rear end in a top hat like Bjorn Rebney. In fact, she generally is pretty loving awesome. Flyweight (125 lbs.) Champion: Barb Honchak (World #1 Flyweight) Top Contenders: #1 Leslie "The Peacemaker" Smith , #2 Vanessa Porto , #3 Jennifer Maia Overview: With half of the world's Top 10 fighters, Invicta dominates this division but Invicta is surprisingly short on depth here, as they've previously spent a lot of resources crystalizing Featherweight and Atomweight while showcasing Strawweight (deepest of the divisions) and Bantamweight (which initially had the most star power). It doesn't help that the current champion, Barb Honchak, is a wrestler with a slightly cardboard personality, but the always-badass Leslie Smith is the confirmed #1 contender and I've yet to see a Leslie Smith match that was less than badass. Bellator shuttering their divisions has left at least a couple of high-end Flyweights available, but plans for Invicta 7 haven't been announced yet. At this rate it may end up being a 20-fight card to fit everyone. Strawweight (115 lbs.) Champion: Carla "Cookie Monster" Esparza (World #3 Strawweight) Top Contenders: #1 Claudia Gadelha , #2 Joanne Calderwood , #3 Felice Herrig Overview: It should be noted that despite not having the top two fighters in the division, this is Invicta's deepest, and outside of those two they basically own with the rest of the Top 10 and then some. Also, World #2 Megumi Fujii is set to retire after her next fight, and Invicta is in negotiations with World #1 Jessica Aguilar now that she has been released from Bellator's prison. Anyway, this is the division where they just have oodles of talent and some of their best fights. I even made a poster to illustrate that this is the best division globally. Now Thug Rose follows me on Twitter. Worth it. Invicta has 11 of those 16 women, not including Ms. Aguilar who they are in negotiations with. I'm sure Shannon Knapp would sell a kidney to sign Fujii though. Meanwhile they have loving everyone else who matters, including fan favorites Joanne Calderwood, Bec Hyatt, and Rose Namajunas. I guess what I'm saying is this is the bestest Invicta division and better than any division not in the UFC. Atomweight (105 lbs.) Champion: Michelle Waterson (World #1 Atomweight) Top Contenders: #1 Jessica Penne , #2 Simona Soukupova , #3 Alex Chambers Overview: Prior to Invicta, this division barely existed outside of Japan. It's thanks to Invicta that it's become a crystalized, legitimate division with regular challengers, even if the rankings are still sorting themselves out (how the gently caress Alex Chambers isn't in the Top 10 in the WMMA Unified Rankings is beyond me). I should note that Invicta is currently in negotiations to sign World #3 Atomweight Seo Hee Ham to get a direct title shot at Michelle Waterson next, possibly at Invicta 7. Anyway, Atomweights may be the tiniest of punchwomen, but they are also the fastest and Michelle Waterson vs. Jessica Penne showcased just how much more flexible the women can be than men when it comes to grappling. After a successful first show, they quickly established major television deals across Asia and started attracting refugees from the dying JMMA scene, including long-time Top 10 staples Shinya Aoki, Tatsuya Kawajiri, and Bibiano Fernandes. In fact, when the UFC offered Fernandes $15k + $15k for a spot on their ill-fated Calgary show, OneFC promptly quadrupled the offer. In general, they have a very international roster, and are Asia's largest and most successful regional promotion. They also are behind the annual Dream MMA resurrection shows on New Years Eve. Although the promotion has had fights at all 8 competitive divisions in the Unified Rules, they tend to specialize in the lighter weight divisions. They also possess a ruleset that is basically the Pride ruleset with elbows, or the Unified Rules with knees, kicks, and stomps to a grounded opponents. Whichever. They have so far put on nine shows with two more currently scheduled. OneFC is scheduled for Friday, September 13 (Thursday in North America). They are now a huge regional promotions, and possibly the most important promotion in all of Europe. KSW has had 28 events with one currently scheduled for September 28. How you view it I have no idea. They currently promote fights in 7 Men's divisions Featherweight - Super Heavyweight, and as best I can determine, two Women's divisions (Strawweight and Flyweight). At least in the top portions of the card, they tend to focus on the heavier divisions (Middleweight and higher). While Poland does have quite a bit of native MMA talent, and KSW is a relatively polished and professional production, the judging has been known to be a little bit... odd. Resulting in moments like this. Champions and Divisions Note: not all of these listings are exclusive or current. Super Heavyweight Champion: This is an exhibition division only, so probably never Notable Fighters: Eric "Butterbean" Esch, Sean McCorkle, Mariusz Pudzianowski, James Thompson Heavyweight: Champion: TBD Notable Fighters: Karol Bedorf, Pawel Nastula, Oli Thompson Light Heavyweight: Champion: Jan Blachowicz Notable Fighters: Goran Reljic, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou Middleweight: Champion: Michael Materla Notable Fighters: Matt Horwich, Mamed Khalidov, Melvin Manhoef, Kendall Grove, Rodney Wallace Welterweight: Champion: Aslambek Saidov Notable Fighters: Borys Mankowski Lighteight: Champion: Maciej Jewtuszko Notable Fighters: Curt Warburton, Andre Winner Featherweight: Champion: TBD Notable Fighters: Anzor Ashiev Women's Flyweight: Champion: Karolina Kowalkiewicz Notable Fighters: Women's Strawweight: Champion: TBD Notable Fighters: Jasminka Cive ________________________________________________________________________________________________ There's totally other stuff too, some of which will hopefully covered in the future, most notably: Resurrection Fighting Alliance (AXS TV staple and quasi-official UFC feeder league) Legacy FC (AXS TV staple and UFC feeder league that doesn't realize it's a feeder league) DEEP (Japanese grass roots promotion which now houses all the former JEWELS fighters) Shooto (the first MMA promotion anywhere, and still the grass rootsiest) Pancrase (formerly a hugely innovative promotion that is now another Japanese B-League and proof that modern day slavery still exists in Japan) Cage Warriors (The U.K.'s best promotion by default) OPLOT (this promotion is everything you ever needed to know about Ukrainian culture) Anyway I totally encourage people to do write-ups on whatever minor promotion they want, and I'll try to add it up top. This isn't just for B-Leagues, this is B-through-Z Leagues really. However, if it's really obscure, their probably ought to be some other compelling reason to include it, like if it's culturally educational, truly hilarious, or preferably both. Yuriy did a write-up for OPLOT, the Ukrainian fed responsible for a number of brawling Heavyweights from Russia and the Ukraine (and a few random other Eastern Europeans and Americans) with uneven physiques and questionable cardio. Also if you ever wanted to know what the Ukraine was like culturally, watching is an excellent primer right down to their drunk ring announcer singing along to the entrance songs and an amateur fighter chugging a beer between rounds last show. They also somehow do shows weekly, as Ukrainians are nothing if not industrious (at drinking and fighting anyway).Yuriy posted:

Miriam Nakamoto stated on MMAJunkie radio (go to about the 53 minute mark for her interview) that Invicta 7 will be on December 7th, still in Kansas City. Seems she's going to be on it. She also apparently turned down a UFC contract offer to stay with Invicta (Leslie Smith also has hinted at this but never said it outright). She separately stated that Shannon Knapp was going to let her continue her Muay Thai career, so that might be a reason, and also that they treated her really, really well in general, and that "it's finally better to have a vagina than a penis." Anyway Mauro Renallo will likely not be at Invicta 7 since he has a scheduling conflict.

Bubba Smith posted:Unfortunately I'm not sure what UFC/athletic commissions could do to curtail so much weight cutting. People are always going to look for every advantage they can get and size is one of the easiest ones to go after. The UFC really is the least likely place to see this happen because of the amount of self-oversight they do. Athletes' weight and their weight cuts tend to be closely monitored from the time they check into their hotel room for an event, well before the water cut begins usually (this is a major part of what Burt Watson oversees). Smaller organizations don't have the resources to do all that, even when they're aware of the issues. Shooto Brazil was a very experienced promotion, I'm sure they'd been aware of weight cutting issues. I other than surprise visits to gyms to see how heavy people are 2-3 weeks out, the best thing commissions could do would be to monitor electrolyte levels of athletes mid-weight cut, and to also restrict how much weight they can cut from 3 days out from the weigh-in. If it means some people like Gleison Tibau can no longer compete at LW, it's not the worst price to pay for safety, and also would mean fewer failed weight cuts in general, not mention fewer thyroid problems for these athletes later in their lives.

Tara Larosa fought Rin Nakai a few hours ago at Pancrase's 20th Anniversary show. It's not available and I've not seen it but most reports are that Larosa decisively beat on Rin for three straight rounds before it went to the judges. Rin Nakai won a Majority Decision by virtue of being Japanese the entire match (this is Pancrase's primary judging criteria).

The Vale Tudo Japan card was going okay, with Will Campuzano eeking out a very close decision with tons of reversals over Hideo Tokoro at Flyweight, then Caol Uno dramatically coming from behind to tap out TAM member Daniel Romero. Uno brought his three young children into the ring afterwords. Then JAG poked Megumi Fujii in the eye in the first round. Twice. The second time drew blood. They stopped the fight for nearly 20 minutes after the second time before restarting it but it was clear Fujii was hosed. The first round was close enough that under Japan's generous scoring criteria it could have been 10-9 Fujii (10-10 with a point deduction). The second round JAG was picking her apart on the feet and Fujii couldn't get it to the ground or land anything because she couldn't see for poo poo. The doctor called it because it was clear Fujii was totally hosed up at that point. JAG wins by TKO at 5:00 of the second round by doctor's stoppage. JAG really does not have a record of doing this poo poo so maybe she trained with the more enclosed gloves you find in most Japanese promotions instead of the VTJ gloves, which appear to be more open than normal Japanese gloves (like UFC gloves actually). Horrible way to end it. Fujii was stoic if sullen throughout but JAG looked nauseous from what happened. Fujii seemed okay with it, and she and JAG hugged for well over a minute and appeared to be talking in pidgin Japinglish to each other (I had no audio but neither speaks the other's language). It was touching in spite of it all. EDIT: Apparently JAG said in her postfight speech (which I couldn't hear) that she didn't feel she deserved a win, which certainly helped the crowd. Shannon Knapp has tweeted she will have a full fight announcement coming sometime later today. The card is expected to be fairly large (I would guess 14+ fights). She also stated in an interview several days ago that Invicta is ramping up to do 8-10 events next year, but at this point I'll believe it when I see it. The only 100% confirmed fight for Invicta 7 on December 7th (unless the date's changed) is Carla Esparza (c) vs. Claudia Gadelha in a Strawweight title fight. Also very likely is Barb Honchak (c) vs. Leslie Smith in a Flyweight title fight. Cyborg, Miriam Nakamoto, and Felice Herrig have also stated they will be on the card, although Cyborg was actually expected to kick off Invicta's Lightweight division. There is also possibly a third title fight, although what that is is a bit up in the air since it seems negotiations with Jewels Atomweight Champion Seo Hee Ham to fight Michelle Waterson have fallen through, as Ham is booked for Deep Jewels 2. Finally Shannon Knapp apparently has signed a "second Bellator veteran" other than Felice Herrig. The choices on that really are just Jessica Aguilar (world #1 Strawweight) and Michelle Ould (top 10 Flyweight), probably Aguilar. But anyway a lot of news is about to drop tomorrow on Invicta 7 it seems. Chrom1um fucked around with this message at 20:38 on Oct 11, 2013 |

Invicta 7 has released what may or may not be their full card today, although their may be some streaming prelims added later. And, um, a lot of poo poo that had been rumored (or rather poo poo that came directly from interviews with people including Shannon Knapp) turned out to not be true, but they are indeed going with three title fights: Main Card Flyweight Championship Match: Barb Honchak (c) (8-2) vs. Leslie Smith (6-3-1) Strawweight Championship Match: Carla Esparza (9-2) (c) vs. Claudia Gadelha (11-0) Inaugural Bantamweight Championship Match: Lauren Strawweight Match: Felice Herrig (9-4) vs. Tecia Torres (3-0) Strawweight Match: Joanne Calderwood (7-0) vs. Katja Kankaanpaa (8-0-1) Featherweight Match: Julia Budd (5-2) vs. Charmaine Tweet (4-3) Flyweight Match: Zoila Frausto Gurgel (12-3) vs. Vanessa Porto (15-6) Bantamweight? Match: Tonya Evinger (11-6) vs. Kelly Kobold (18-3-1) Flyweight Match: Nina Ansaroff (5-3) vs. Munah Holland (5-2) Prelims ??? Shannon Knapp also hinted that Invicta 8 will be in January with Thug Rose and Bec Hyatt on the card. Cyborg probably will return then as well. As a main card it's pretty loving stacked, as their isn't a single match without at least one Top 10 fighter in it aside from the opener (and Munah Holland is only out of the Top 10 for inactivity, she was #7 last month), but it really feels like some prelims are needed. If Invicta is going to be going to a much more frequent schedule starting in January, it seems like they may indeed have struck a deal with Showtime or whoever. More notes: -The second Bellator veteran signed that Knapp had alluded to appears to have been Munah Holland. -Julie Kedzie will be fighting at UFC Fight Night 33 in Australia (technically on Saturday December 7th as well but airs in the U.S. on Friday), and will not be available to do commentating. -While Invicta 7 isn't actually going up against UFC Fight Night 33, they do appear to be going against WSOF 7. PSP Women's Bantamweight Rankings October 12, 2013 Basically, I ranked 40 women at Bantamweight to prove a point in a sperg-argument recently and I didn't want that to go to waste. 1) Ronda Rousey (7-0) (UFC) UFC Champion 2) Cat Zingano (8-0) (UFC) Pictured recovering from surgery with Carla Esparza. 3) Sara McMann (7-0) (UFC) 4) Liz Carmouche (9-3) (UFC) 5) Sarah Kaufman (16-2) (UFC) 6) Miesha Tate (13-4) (UFC) 7) Alexis Davis (14-5) (UFC) 8) Lauren Murphy (7-0) (Invicta) 9) Sarah D’Alelio (7-4) (Invicta) 10) Amanda Nunes (8-3) (UFC) 11) Julianna Pena (4-2) (UFC) 12) Shayna Bazler (15-8) (UFC) 13) Rosi Sexton (13-3) (UFC) 14) Jessica Eye (10-1) (UFC) 15) Germaine de Randamie (4-2) (UFC) 16) Jessica Andrade (9-3) (UFC) 17) Holly Holm (5-0) (Legacy FC) 18) Miriam Nakamoto (2-0, 1 NC) (Invicta) 19) Raquel Pennington (3-3) (UFC) 20) Jessamyn Duke (2-0, 1 NC) (UFC) 21) Julie Kedzie (16-12) (UFC) 22) Sarah Moras (3-1) (UFC) 23) Rin Nakai (15-0-1) (Pancrase/Japanese talent agency slave) 24) Tara Larosa (21-4) (free agent) 25) Tonya Evinger (Invicta) 26) Sheila Gaff (10-6-1) (free agent) 27) Jessica Rakoczy (1-3-1) (UFC) 28) Peggy Morgan (2-0) (UFC) 29) Kaitlyn Young (7-8-1) (Invicta) 30) Roxanne Modafferi (15-10) (UFC) 31) Bethe Correia (6-0) (UFC) 32) Valerie Letourneau (4-3) (free agent) 32) Revelina Berto (3-1) (free agent) 34) Sheila Bird (3-0) (free agent) 35) Elaine Albuquerque (6-1) (free agent) 36) Ana Maria (5-4) (free agent) 37) Marciea Allen (2-1) (free agent) 38) Agnieszka Niedzwiedz (4-0) (free agent) 39) Juliete Silva (3-1) (free agent) 40) Aline Serio (5-4) (free agent) Notable people not ranked: -Kelly Kobold is returning to action at Invicta 7 for her fight in over 2 years and just her second fight since she initially retired 5 years ago. She used to be very good (she's 18-3-1, with losses to Gina Carano, Cyborg, and Tara Larosa in her prime), but since I have no idea how good she is now I've decided not to rank her. -Milana Dudieva would be ranked around #22 or #23 but she is moving back to Featherweight for her next fight, where she's spent most of her career. -TUF elimination round loser Colleen Schneider probably would have landed on the list in if she hadn't already moved back to Flyweight. There also appears to be little indication that Bethany Marshall also probably would have sneaked on the list but she's indicated she's also returning to Flyweight. -I can't honestly rank UFC's recent acquisition Alexandra Albu when of her supposed 5 fights, only one is verified (which was supposed to be her fifth but was promoted as her "debut") and she and her coach have dodged questions on her first four opponents beyond the fact they were in Thailand. I have no doubt she's trained in Thailand. As for havng four professional MMA fights in Thailand, I find that sketchy to say the least, not to mention the likely quality of her opponents, or the fact that she would be on the small side even at Flyweight. I can't rank her on training videos or on crushing a can (even her one verified fight was against a fighter who was 0-0). I'll wait until I see how she does against Kedzie. On a separate note, since 6 fights have already been announced for the Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale, there only appears to be ~6 or so open spots on the TUF Finale for fights, and so it seems that not everyone on the show made it (although I suppose they might have spread a couple fights out to other shows, idk, Or maybe some got injured). Anyway Invicta might be using one or two of the people who didn't make it it seems, and I've been able to confirm that pretty much everyone on the Women's side is training for some sort of fight right now. That being said I've been kind of poo poo at predicting what happens on TUF after the Elimination Round winners, so whatever.

So, Mr. Askren, thoroughly disgruntled with both Bellator and the UFC, and not liking being told to go fight in WSoF, is rumored to be moving to Singapore to take a job in Evolve MMA, presumably as their wrestling coach. This would make him pretty much a lock to fight in ONE FC, who if nothing else will at least pay him well to squash glorified cans.

Even disregarding the women who recently left to compete on TUF 18, Invicta currently has under contract 23 of the 50 Top 10 ranked women in the Unified Women's Pro-MMA Rankings. Finally, Invicta's first six shows have all been generally excellent barring the first show's main-event, and Mauro Ranallo. Originally planned for October and then November 2nd, Invicta 7 was pushed back as a result of scheduling conflicts and of original co-owner and match-maker Janet Martin having a falling out with the company. No, there probably wasn't any sex involved, it appears to have been an embezzling thing. As such Shannon Knapp is running the company almost single-handedly with several assistants. Invicta 7 will be 9 fights with a 7-fight main-card headlined by a triple main-event with three title fights, a result of a fairly sparse schedule that supposedly will ramp up to 8-10 events next year. The top match is Iowan wrestler and medical student Barb Honchak making her first defense of the Flyweight title against former Top 10 Bantamweight Leslie "Diaz" Smith, a striker out of Cesar Gracie Jiu Jitsu who comes to gently caress poo poo up. The co-main features Strawweight Champion Carla Esparza returning after being out for nearly a year defending her title for the first time against Brazilian riot cop Claudia Gadelha. The other co-main is improbable Alaskan Lauren Murphy (nee Taylor) fighting Muay Thai World Champion Miriam Nakamoto for the Inaugural Bantamweight Title. Also on the card are arguably two more Title Eliminators and multiple debuts of high-profiles signings including Tonya Evinger, Felice Herrig, and Munah Holland. Not on the card is Thug Rose, so sorry 'bout that. Julie Kedzie will also be absent from announcing, since she will be in Australia the day before fighting for the UFC, and Mauro Ranallo, who has a scheduling conflict announcing boxing. -Atom- posted:Whoops, wrong thread! She's a really good color commentator, is a veteran and pioneer of WMMA, has been a paid assistant at Team Jackson's for several years, and gets along well with everyone. She's also someone who could theoretically preside over pressers or do hype interviews if Shannon Knapp isn't available. I don't know if she'll get the fine science of maintaining divisional hierarchies like Joe Silva does but she seems like she has plenty of potential to do well. Also Invicta, for all their rad scouting ability (which was Knapp as much as anyone), hasn't done the best job of maintaining divisional hierarchies as it is. Almost all promotions gently caress this up, but just saying, they'd already dropped the ball on a few things. If Kedzie's really good she could be an improvement over Janet Martin. So, in less scrub-tastic news, Jessica Aguilar is fighting Alida Gray in her next fight for WSoF for the inaugural WSoF Strawweight belt. Alida Gray is 4-0 (4-1 amat.), all 8 wins by stoppage, has a submission win over Patricia Vidonic, and KO'd the gently caress out of some chick in October. She or Stephanie Eggink were the two best possible choices of who was available so I'm actually pretty bummed Gray wasn't signed to Invicta instead. To be fair to the other girl who looks like a wobbly stick figure, this was at the start of the third round and she'd already been pretty hosed up.

And Mei Yamaguchi was robbed in her last fight so I'd add her too, but just to cover all the bases maybe add Patricia Vidonic too. Pull out Emily Kagan (I really am not sure how Kagan got in there, she can't finish people, she's not very marketable, and her best win by far (Ashley Cummins) was by most accounts a robbery). Add Mizuki Inoue and give her a full-time translator for training. There you go. Since Ayaka Hamasaki has a long-term injury, you now have arguably the top 12 healthy Strawweights in the world plus 4 other excellent prospects. Unfortunately this is all pretty much a pipe dream (although I wouldn't be surprised to see Eggink on the show).

I meant to add in my post above that in the long-run, JAG being in the WSoF for now may actually be a positive thing for the UFC. If she sticks around there and keeps winning, she can come into the UFC once she finishes her contract shortly after TUF 20 concludes and be an instant title contender. Considering that 15 of the 16 people on TUF 20 will leave the tournament on a loss, getting a highly credible contender right away for the new Champion would be invaluable.

Intel&Sebastian posted:They'll come into the finale event with a loss but some of them will come out of it with a win and a highly publicized story/drama that might even involve the champion. Barring a controversial decision in a fight involving the eventual champion, or an injury to one of the top four fighters in the tournament before they've lost, it's going to be hard for any of the othter fighters to come out of the TUF Finale with the needed credibility to be be next-in-line for a title shot. The upside is the champion will be a star, and the entire top half of the division or more will probably have some name recognition, but having an outside challenger or two would buy valuable time to build up another title challenger from within that TUF 20 pool. The only promising outside options right now are World #1 Jessica Aguilar, and shooting star Mizuki Inoue. Neither are guaranteed to stay spotless over the next 15 months, but both should be under consideration right now. JAG's WSoF contract should be up by the time the TUF 20 winner needs to fight again, and Inoue now is hooked up with Shu Hirata who could easily secure her a UFC contract if she continues to be impressive and if Shannon Knapp lets her go (I have a feeling she'll be leaving DEEP at the next available opportunity).

UPDATED: I'm going to use this elsewhere too, so I decided to make it a lot prettier with pictures and hyperlinks. TUF 18 fights (including the qualifying round) are included for ranking criteria. Fighters who have not fought in 15 months and do not have a fight scheduled in the next 3 are considered inactive and thus ineligible for ranking. Things get increasingly blurry after around #20 or so, so I apologize if a ranking is a bit baffling after that, but I decided I wasn't going to spend 30 hours on this. -Atom-, sorry about Sheila Gaff, but if you take away her losses and fake-glove-touch victories she still legitimately beat up Aisling Daly which was enough for her to squeeze in at #40. FightMatrix is the best computerized MMA rankings by at least an order of magnitude, and think they work as a good counterweight to some of the human rankings I've seen, but they still have issues. For instance Kowalkiewicz is grotesquely overranked (I saw her fight against Soukupova and Kowalkiewicz is legit, but #8 is batshit). I had to think very carefully about where Esparza and Gadelha stood and the fact is I think a lot of people were ranking Esparza #2 by default. The short answer for why put Gadelha ahead is that her mauling Hamasaki is more impressive than any of Esparza's wins, even with the timezone difference. Anyway I ranked the top 36. FightMatrix stops at 20.

1st AD posted:I didn't realize you could get ranked #4 by not losing as badly as you did the first time to the champ. Also, I can't really think of any time Tate actually did anything resembling offense. Like just because Joe Rogan goes OHHHHHHHH! doesn't mean that you actually did anything important. I consider sweeps and punches to the face offense, especially against someone who was considered nearly unsweepable. When I'm ranking this many people I don't just take wins into account, I take the nature of their losses into account too. I normally wouldn't count a 3rd round stoppage where they were controlled for most of the fight as impressive except it came against Ronda Rousey. Same person who armbarred Sarah Kaufman in less than 60 seconds in a much more typical Rousey annihilation, in-between her wins over Tate and long after Tate's loss to Kaufman in 2009. For that matter I also take into account how long ago certain fights are as well, as amazingly fighters do change. In addition, for the fighters whom I've seen enough footage of I'll take consistent patterns into account, and Tate has a tendency to be crazy tough, almost to a Nogueira degree. Her comeback win against Kedzie was not a fluke in my opinion, as she did the same thing against Marloes Coenen, who would definitely be in the Top 10 here if she were a Bantamweight still. Anyway, I had a much lower opinion of Tate going in to her fight against Rousey than coming out of it, and had her ranked right next to Carmouche, for all the reasons you cited. I had heard about how much larger Tate's training camp for Rousey, apparently reinvesting her newfound TUF and sponsor money, and about her gaining muscle mass for the fight, and I pretty much dismissed it as all for naught. However she clearly was much more formidable than I'd expected. Btw this is all coming from a Ronda Rousey fan. Chrom1um fucked around with this message at 00:00 on Jan 21, 2014 |
