He hopes both can make it to the TUF 20 house. Ah thanks. Apparently Kish also missed weight by a bit? I updated the rankings I put on page 17 or so but since Kish missed weight and this was her Strawweight debut, I put her in as an unranked insert. Kish has the better chance of making the show but missing weight in one's last fight is a really bad sign, even if it was just by a pound, considering you have to make weight 3 times in 6 weeks to win the show. TheCool69 posted:Hey lobster you should check out Tina Lähdemäki from Finland... She is a really solid fighter 5-0 fighter who in her last fight choked out Karla Benitez Lähdemäki seems like someone to keep an eye on but it's also worth noting that she's a Flyweight, and that's where the match took place. I may do some sort of hype thing for Flyweights at some point but that division is in recovery mode (which Invicta is facilitating somewhat by giving it more attention).

It's not really known when the open tryouts are but I assume they're going to start in late April or something, wherein they choose the 5 final girls and presumedly a couple of alternates. Jessica Penne, Aisling Daly, Brianna VanBurren, Heather Jo Clark, and (inactive but former top 5 Atomweight) Lisa Ellis are all apparently trying out, among other notables. Not sure about Stephanie Eggink. V.V Mei speaks perfect English but seems to be more interested in dropping to Atomweight for now.

Invicta just signed 15 new punchladies: Atomweight (105lbs) • Amber Brown- 3-1 - World #5 AW in the Unified Rankings Strawweight (115lbs) • Livia Renata Souza- 5-0 - Good prospect, BJJ specialist (#19 in my unreleased FLW PSP rankings) • Karolina Kowalkiewicz – 4-0 She's a very good prospect, not ranked in the Unified Rankings but ranked #23 by PSP • Mellony Geugjes - 0-1 (18-5-2 Kickboxing, 10-0 Boxing) • Herica Tiburcio- 7-2 World #12 SW (#17 by PSP) • Ashley Greenway- 0-0 (4-1 amat.) • Joanna Jedrzejczyk – 4-0 - World #6 Flyweight (I had her #7 FLW in my unreleased PSP rankings) apparently dropping to Strawweight (still listed at FLW in the press release but SW on the website, and she was leaked ahead of time as a SW) Flyweights • Rachael Ostovich - 0-1 (6-0 amateur) • Valerie Letourneau – 4-3 - TriStar grappler • Delaney Owen – 0-0 (7-2 amateur) • Roxanne Modafferi – 15-11, (listed at BW in the press release but FLW on the website, and FLW is her natural division) (#30 BW PSP rankings) Bantamweights • Peggy "Daywalker" Morgan - 2-1 (#31 PSP rankings) • Cindy Dandois - 5-1 - Was previously retired and this is a really, really unexpected signing. She was a former Top 5 FW when FW was the big women's division, and she actually beat Marloes Coenen in her debut match. Mostly a grappler type. • Irene Aldana - 3-1 Actually kind of decent from the match I've seen of hers. (#38 PSP Rankings) Featherweights • Faith Van Duin - 4-0 - Technically she is the world #4 FW. Her record is kind of suspect since she picked up 3 of those wins in a one-night tournament, but FW needs anyone they can get. Chrom1um fucked around with this message at 04:53 on Feb 15, 2014 |

The one bit of bright news talent-wise is that former Top 10 Strawweight Saori Ishioka is returning from retirement. She won't be Top 10 when she returns, hell she'll barely be Top 25, but she's still pretty decent and is only 26 (she originally retired at the age of 24), so it'll be interesting to see how she works out.

Shannon Knapp just dropped a crapload of news for Wombat Sports, none of which I was aware of except that they were still trying to get a TV deal going (they were offered TV deals as soon as Invicta 2, but they wanted to get both a good deal and one that allowed retention of creative control). Summary points: •Invicta 8 will probably be in late April, pushed back from late March (this is not a surprise). The hold up is negotiating a TV deal. When the date announced the card will be announced too, since they already have a "mock card" in place. •Once Invicta has a TV deal they'll probably leave Kansas City (they've been looking to do this for a while). •Invicta 9's date and main-event may be announced at roughly the same time Invicta 8 is announced. •Cyborg vs. Edianne Gomes has been confirmed as Cyborg's next match and final match at Featherweight (there had been speculation of it being Julia Budd but Gomes makes more sense). She reiterated that she'd drop down and fight Invicta BW Champion Lauren Murphy after this. •Zoila Frausto (she broke up with Jorge Gurgel) is dropping back to Strawweight after failing at FLW (prediction: Mizuki Inoue's gonna gently caress her up). •World #5 SW Ayaka Hamasaki is dropping to Atomweight this is kind of a shocker, but it's a good move on her part as she's kind of small for SW. This also corroborates the possibility that Hamasaki may be done with Deep/Jewels, which would be pretty rad if Invicta could get her as an exclusive talent. •New signee Herica Tiburcio (#12 SW) is also dropping down. This kind of makes sense being that she's freaking 4'11". •"After Invicta’s announcement of the 15 fighters a few weeks ago, Knapp was under fire for not signing more U.S. talent." (wtf?) "Knapp made a note to mention that more signings are on the way, many are American talent. We should expect a few more Atomweights to be added to the roster next week; all American talent." (I actually thought it was cool how she was signing excellent foreign talent but whatever). •Invicta is waiting for the TUF 20 tryouts to happen before making additional signings, whenever the gently caress those happen (probably in April). •She reiterated that she isn't looking to sell the company "even if it was offered."

They should have worked out something closer to 12/12 but hey what are ya gonna do other than go on twitter and put everybody's business out in the open? My understanding is Magalhaes was actually making $22k/$22k in the UFC (or claims this; he didn't fight in any place that releases purse information in his second UFC run, but humiliating M-1 might have gotten him a sweeter salary) and the WSoF offered him $6k/$6k. Anyway Ali Abdel-Aziz is a former fighter and apparently really good at networking, which seems to be how he got his job as a manager (with Dominance MMA Management) and also his job as the WSoF matchmaker and de facto GM. Unfortunately he's kind of a loving idiot and bad at his job.

This has led to numerous notable talents retiring because of lack of fights (Din Thomas, Gilbert Yvel, Jorge Santiago, and Gerald Harris off the top of my head). They burned through their entire Welterweight division before making a title match between Josh Burkman and Steve Carl, and did the same thing at BW before Marlon Moraes tried to win. They've managed to piss away their HW and LHW divisions both into utter states of disarray. They've signed Ashley Evans-Smith after she beat Fallon Fox, but have signed no one for her to fight. Their women's Strawweight division is utterly hosed should Jessica Aguilar lose. He has the matchmaking skills of a slightly above-average Sherdog fantasy-booker and the same level of tact to boot. Gregor Samsa posted:Does WSOF not run shows in the US? Cuz my understanding is that being a promoter/manager violates the Muhammad Ali Act. His company, Dominance MMA, still lists him as the founder in the first hit of a Google search, but he also claims to have stepped away from managing in an interview from about a year ago, which I was unaware of (he claims it's to focus his undivided attention on WSoF, which again he's done a horrible job of running). I'm not 100% positive what the deal is with that, and are you sure the Ali Act is even applicable to MMA? My guess is either way, he doesn't care about things like "contract law," considering that according to Robert Sargent (who would know), he's already tried to poach several Invicta fighters, most notably Cyborg on multiple attempts, all of whom were under contract, in a rather clear case of Tortious Interference.

So, details are emerging on Invicta FC on FightPass. The first event will be headlined by Cyborg vs. Edianne Gomes as expected, and will be "in late-summer" probably still in Kansas City. Invicta 9 is expected to take place just a month later with Michelle Waterson fighting, and the rumored opponent is Seo Hee Ham. Seo Hee Ham is the Jewels Atomweight Champion, but in her last show for them she oddly fought in a kickboxing match (which she won) instead of doing a title defense, even though it was the promotion's first iPPV. If she's jumping ship, that would explain things. Anyway one huge problem with Invicta has been that they were unable to book all their talent often enough on their own shows to maintain 5 divisions. With the FightPass deal I hope this is no longer the case. When Shannon Knapp was talking about a deal at the beginning of the year, she actually speculated about doing 8-10 shows a year, which would be ideal.

Changing the subject, I updated the Shark Tank Mural for Invicta's return in August(?) and the UFC's Strawweight division launching next month. I wasn't sure which thread to put it in but I guess here is applicable plus the subject needed changing. Click for the full-size version. Notes: -V.V Mei, Karla Benitez, Patricia Vidonic, and Emily Kagan removed for dropping to Atomweight, losing too much, losing too much, and being borderline in the first place respectively. -Justine Kish added for being an undefeated Muay Thai machine. -Brianna Van Buren added for beating Patricia Vidonic. -Tina "Jelly Bean" Lähdemäki added for being undefeated, beating Karla Benitez, and getting paired with Claudia Gadelha in the division's UFC debut. -Kalindra Faria added for dropping to Strawweight successfully and beating Sanja Sucevic after wrecking a whole lot of people as a Top 10 Flyweight. -Megumi Fujii will keep an honorary spot until the UFC crowns a Champion. It's been less than a year since her final fight anyway. -Jessica Aguilar has a Mexican flag added under her American one because it seems she was born there.

Invicta FC 9 full card is now up: November 1st, RiverCenter in Davenport, Iowa • Flyweight Title fight: Barb Honchak (9-2) (c) vs. Takayo Hashi (15-4) Hashi is actually a pretty decent challenger, far better than Yasuko Tamada was anyway, but Honchak is the one active Flyweight who I think could take out a few top 10 Bantamweights. Honchak should be the heavy favorite here. I assume the winner could face DeAnna Bennet next • Strawweight fight: Mizuki Inoue (8-1, 1 NC) vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz (5-0) I'm kind of surprised this fight was made. I figured Inoue would come back since she said she wanted to do at least one more fight in Invicta. However, I thought she'd be given someone less valuable, since the UFC has made it obvious they want to sign her, and Kowalkiewicz is surging right now. This appears to be an eliminator for Kankaanpaa's title. Inoue should be the modest favorite here. • Atomweight fight: Ayaka Hamasaki (10-1) vs. Herica Tiburcio (8-2) This is a pretty competitive match-up between two formerly highly-ranked Strawweights and is another likely title eliminator. I would think Hamasaki is the slight favorite. Either of these fighters would be an interesting challenge to Waterson, as they're both very tough grapplers. • Bantamweight fight: Kaitlin Young (7-8-1) vs. Cindy Dandois (5-1) Belgian judoka Cindy Dandois has a win over Marloes Coenen but that was a long time ago and she's coming off a very long layoff. Young is definitely past her peak though. This is a toss-up really, too many X-factors. I'd have to lean towards Dandois though since my understanding is she's been training with Miesha Tate, who has brought some other very good female fighters to Xtreme Couture as well including Leslie Smith. Invicta's BW roster is so weak right now that if Dandois won, I assume she'd be in contention right away (although I'm not sure how they're going to deal with Cyborg right now). • Atomweight fight: Nicdali Rivera-Calanoc (8-7) vs. Jodie Esquibel (4-1) Rivera-Calanoc is a lot better than her record indicates as she spent most of her career at higher weight classes, and her losses include people like Jessica Penne, Felice Herrig, and Angela Magana. She's hardly a world-beater, even at AW, and Esquibel should be the favorite. This is kind of an interesting match-up since it definitely seems to be a match made to help establish the AW pecking order. The winner here could be one more win away from a title shot. I have to consider Esquibel about a solid favorite here. • Atomweight fight: Amber Brown (3-1) vs. Liz McCarthy (2-1) See above: Amber Brown is a top 5 Atomweight in theory, and McCarthy (6-0 amateur) is a pretty good prospect. If Brown and Esquibel win their matches, I might expect to see them fight each other at Invicta 11 for the title shot-after-next. I do have to consider Brown the favorite here. • Featherweight fight: Amanda Bell (2-2) vs. Maria Hougaard-Djursaa (5-5) Featherweight is a division in desperate need of some fresh blood and Amanda Bell, who was 6-1 as an amateur, is coming off a win over Marina Shafir. Hougard-Djursaa is Danish journeywoman who has some wins and losses against tough competition, but Bell should be a solid favorite here. • Flyweight fight: Shannon Sinn (1-1) vs. Andrea K. Lee (1-0) I dunno who either of these people are. • Strawweight fight: Jenny Liou Shriver (2-0) vs. Jamie Moyle (0-0) Jenny Liou Shriver, who's a pretty drat big SW, apparently did pretty well at the TUF tryouts where Julie Kedzie scouted her but not good enough to make the show. She may be one to watch. I dunno who Jamie Moyle is. • Bantamweight fight: Kelly McGill (1-0) vs. Maegan Goodwin (0-0) I've never heard of either of these fighters. So, with Cyborg dropping to 135 and presumably UFC-bound after that, Honchak is getting her due as the _other_ major title-holder in Invicta besides Michelle Waterson. Beyond that is seems that they're trying to crystallize the AW pecking order, trying to create a SW contender, and just maybe develop some future contenders at BW and FW. LWs are not represented on this card, but LW is a micro-division right now. Chrom1um fucked around with this message at 16:42 on Sep 24, 2014 |

She used to be an honorary Alpha Male, but then spent time in WA (forget the name of the camp, I think Chiesa and Silcilia fight out of it too) with Pena, I've also seen her at Syndicate (or Extreme Couture?) in Las Vegas, and more recently in Belgium. Tate seems to have found a pretty good home at Xtreme Couture, since the gym's relevancy was seriously fading and she's a big name active fighter who was able to bring in others. Also I don't think she ever officially trained at Sikjitsu with Pena, Sicilia, and Chiesa in Spokane. Following their split from Team Alpha Male, she and her spouse trained at Victory Athletics in Takoma, I think under Dennis Hallman or something. Didn't know she went to Belgium, but apparently she brought back Cindy Dandois with her as a souvenir or something.

So yeah, I figure I oughta post something about Invicta. Losing Aldana/Reneau was pretty tragic. I figured if Irene Aldana and Tonya Evinger both won their fights, they'd fight for the (vacant) Bantamweight Title. I fully expect the UFC to snatch up Aldana after she wins a couple more fights either way though. She's a talented Bantamweight who is not only Mexican born, she also lives and trains there, and has some pretty nifty striking. Losing Van Duin/Tweet isn't quite as damaging, but considering how thin the talent pool is at Women's Featherweight, and considering that Bellator is now competing for that talent, this was a match that Invicta really could used to have help build up a plausible As for the matches actually on the card: Herica Tiburcio (8-2) is a hella-talented grappler who spent most of her career at SW, but is 4'11" so the drop to AW isn't exactly unreasonable. She is a very solid fighter and a far better opponent for Michelle Waterson than Yasuko Tamada. "Far better" is a relative term however, and I would consider Waterson to still be a heavy favorite. Atomweight World Champion Michelle Waterson (12-3) is the most flexible grappler in the sport, has some of the most unorthodoxed striking, and has cardio for days, and I'd consider Tiburcio a pretty solid underdog here. Tiburcio's best path to victory is to overpower Waterson in the clinch and get the ground and pound TKO. Waterson's best path to victory is basically any other way, but most likely outworking and escaping Tiburcio on the ground and then loving her up with her feet. Team Quest fighter Tonya Evinger (14-5) is a longtime veteran with ridiculous core strength and very solid boxing. She also is a strong proponent of traditional education, and is best known for losing to Gina Carano because she got distracted by her looks (this is the excuse she gave anyway). She's been underestimated a number of times and is the easy favorite here. Cindy Dandois (5-1) is a Belgian judoka who is and lately a training partner of Miesha Tate's, who has not fought in over 3 years, having taken time off to start a family. However, she holds a very narrow win over Marloes Coenen in her very first professional fight. Depending on how much Tate's really been helping her, she could be a very interesting match-up for Evinger because she's rather an unknown quantity at this point. Evinger is the heavy favorite by default in my opinion though. Deanna Bennett (5-0) vs. Jennifer Maia (9-3-1) is probably a title eliminator at Flyweight, with Bennett coming off three straight stoppages including a TKO win over Michelle "White Pride" Ould. Maia is a Chute Boxe veteran who has only lost to fighters who were Top 5 in the division (Vanessa Porto and Leslie Smith) and to Sheila Gaff by a faked glove touch. She also owns wins earlier in her career over Zoila Frausto, Jessica Andrade, and Elaine Albuquerque (who you've probably never heard of but trust me she's good). Alexa Grasso (5-0) vs. new signee Alida Gray (4-1) is a really interesting match in part because it shows just how deep Invicta's Strawweight bench is even after the UFC took 10 fighters from that division (Chambers and Penne were AWs, Daly was a FLW). Grasso is a solid prospect out of Mexico who cruised through Ashley Cummins at Invicta 8 and is all of 21 years old. Alida Gray (4-1) is a wrestler with a crushing overhand right who is best known for getting obliterated by the #1 Strawweight in the world Jessica Aguilar, after which the WSoF didn't really have anymore use for her since their women's divisions tend to only hold about 2-3 fighters at a time (Kalindra Faria would be another solid pick-up for Invicta). At 37, time really isn't on her side if she's going to make a statement in this sport, but she's still a very competent fighter. It's amazing how with Katja Kankaanpää (10-1-1), Karolina Kowalkiewicz (6-0), Mizuki Inoue (9-2), Stephanie Eggink (4-2), Alexa Grasso (5-0), Alida Gray (4-1), and Livia Renata Souza (7-0), all of whom are arguably Top 20 fighters, Strawweight is still Invicta's deepest division even after the UFC basically reaped it. Peggy "Daywalker" Morgan (2-2 pro, 2-0 amat.) really, really is better suited to Featherweight, so I'm kind of curious to see what she can do here. I want to try and build up her opponent and fellow ginger Andria Wawro (3-1 pro, 3-1 amat.), but considering she looked like a meth addict at the weigh-ins, and by far the best fighter on her resume is the one she lost to, that's kind of hard. I have to expect Morgan to be the heavy favorite here, and hopefully she won't have to go back to being an English Professor. Also Roxy Modafferi (16-11) is fighting some late-replacement chick I'm totally unfamiliar with outside of her fighting at the last Invicta, Andrea Lee (2-0). I really don't know if Lee is any good or not, but if Modafferi is getting a softball match-up for once, it's only fair considering her resume. Someone else can ramble about the opening two fights. Really, considering that the over-under for an Invicta event is that at least one fight is gonna get scratched too late to get a replacement, they really should book more than 10 fights next time.

EvanSchenck posted:I remember a year or two ago there was this big MMA kerfluffle on Wikipedia. You know how the Wiki page for any given UFC event is basically the best resource for figuring out WTF is going on in them? Like they have the announcement, information about fighters dropping out and getting replaced, what happened at the weigh-ins, full results pf each fight 30 seconds after it ends, performance bonuses, all the information? And you can use them to cross-reference the fighters, previous events, etc. If by months you mean 2 years, and it's actually much more complicated than that. There were more than one "deletionist," but one of them was on there approximately 50 hours a week. He also devoted about 80% of his attention to UFC pages and the occasional debuting UFC fighter while attacking other things (like indy MMA and random stuff like tennis and motorsports) just enough to avoid any sort of administrative issues until he rage quit when he finally got an official warning. He also never laid a finger on the Bellator pages, while one of the people who seemed to be on his side in deletion logs actually helped make a lot of the Bellator pages. I found that extremely ominous, since he basically behaved as if deleting MMA off Wikipedia was a full-time job, which he was actually pretty good at. If there's a silver-lining, it's that this all drew so much attention that Zane Simon got a job at Bloody Elbow out of it, since he had been maintaining the "List of Current UFC Fighters" page and that page ended up being a crucial flashpoint. Zane Simon's a pretty good dude.

^^^^Hell, if Bjorn Rebney had put someone on payroll specifically to gently caress with UFC pages on Wikipedia, I wouldn't have been surprised. Not even kidding.

Intel&Sebastian posted:And the stories are always 2000x more fun that being involved in them. Look, I got dragged in kicking and screaming man. The people who actually were trying to defend MMA articles for the most part weren't doing a great job. Some actually made things worse, like the guy who nominated 15 different names for a sock-puppet investigation. This just pissed the Admins off by being so ridiculous.

DekeThornton posted:I just watched Kianzad's fight, since I'm horribly nationalistic, and I really liked her boxing. She is improving pretty rapidly. Hopefully she gets a chance in the UFC soonish. Shannon Knapp wants her to fight Evinger next. That being said, she's already UFC-ready, and would be a nice pick-up for a division that absolutely could use a few quality signings right now.
