Anyone have an idea whats causing this?

code:
XR_3DA.exe caused BREAKPOINT in module "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl\bin\xrCore.dll"
at 0023:0084CC85, xrDebug::backend()+165 byte(s)

e: disregard, a clean install and uninstalling all the other mods I had, along with renaming that .dll fixed it.

After playing Shoker for a bit, it really makes you appreciate the upgrade system in base CoP. 9x39 weapons are basically worthless because of how large the ranges are in CoP, and how much you need to compensate for bullet drop and travel speed, which is a real shame because of how much more powerful they are than other rounds. Also the base round is super inaccurate compared to its AP, while also not having the sniper round that most other calibers have.

9x39 is meant to be a close range round anyway. If you're good with the rangefinder you can make it work at longer ranges, but it really should be a "sneak up on enemy, fill them with holes from under 30 meters" kind of engagement.

Electro-Chimeras shouldn't be a thing. Unless you're in a certain area, there's no safe way to take one out by the time you realize what it is. It's basically the game killing you with advance notice.

So the pale blue locations are owned by a faction, yellow are unowned, and dark blue are main bases...? I'm kind of lost as to what some of this stuff means. I did manage to wipe out Clear Sky in the swamps though, they have Zero faction strength so that's one faction out of the way. Freedom got taken out too but I'm not sure by who.

I'm kind of worried since the Bandits have something like 110 members and Defiance is only 55 :ohdear:

Basically it works like this:

Light blue are faction bases. Controlling these points will severely weaken the faction, if not outright annihilate them (apart from token resistance now and then)

Dark blue/purpley are resource points. These are rather important as they reinforce your bases defenses, allow more stalker squads to exist, and upgrade the equipment sold by your traders.

Yellow are just generic points.

Oh, thanks! I was thinking it was like painting the map with your colors, where you'd make the yellow points blue by controlling them for a while.

Yantar on Master mode in SOC is a loving nightmare. I just got to the escort mission, and I can't even reliably get him to the first concrete tube, because the zombies chew through my armor and health like it's nothing. All they have are MP5s and PMs as far as I know. I bought the Mossberg from the scientist, but it doesn't do poo poo. I found a custom Groza and Monolith armor a while ago, which has carried me pretty far, but apparently I am doing something very wrong. Any advice to make this part less painful?

Before you accept the escort mission you should clear out as many zombies in the area as possible, all the way up to the lab compound entrance where it starts getting all spooky and yellow from psi-emissions.

Dealing with zombies is the same anywhere: they don't feel pain or take much damage from body shots and you have to destroy the central nervous system to actually put them down. Load the Mossberg with slug or dart shells and aim for the head; buckshot isn't really effective unless you can get in close enough to practically touch them. If you have a scoped rifle, that's even better, the Groza is a beast that will take you almost to the endgame if you can stick a scope on it, hard part is keeping it fed properly.

IIRC monolith armor (the suit in agroprom underground, anyway) is still pretty light, and only protects the torso from light gunfire. Zombies spraying you with 9mm are going to hurt really bad, but their accuracy is terrible so if you keep them at a distance you shouldn't take much damage.

Do you know where I might be able to find a scope for that thing? I haven't seen any yet. All of the scopes I saw on the other rifles dropping before this one wouldn't go on, but it might be because it's the custom one and not the normal Groza.

Custom 5.45mm Groza doesn't allow for a scope, but the iron sights on it are really good. Just keep it in single shot mode and you can nail headshots from surprisingly far off.

Nails posted:

I figured that Monolith Armor was pretty solid because it was worth so much money, I didn't realize there were different armor classes in the game. I just check all of the numbers and compare them. It looked like it had more bulletproofing, but maybe I misunderstood something. Is there a better piece of armor I could grab that isn't going to totally break the game? I'll definitely try to work on my keepaway game and headshots though. Thanks for the advice!

The only armor that could possibly "break" your game is the exosuit and you aren't gonna accidentally find it. If you have a Sunrise/Stalker suit, that'll carry you a long way until you score a SEVA or the Green Ecologist suit. The military bulletproof suit is okay in a pinch but does poo poo against environmental hazards, and the Exosuit prevents you from sprinting. The Wind of Freedom suit is also one of my favorite suits...coupled with some sparkler/electric artifacts, stack them and you can sprint forever.

So yeah, definitely pick up a SEVA or the Green ecologist suit ASAP. IIRC they both have 2nd gen night vision which is actually useful unlike the blurry green mess of night vision on other suits, and stacking anti-rad artifacts on them will let you hang out on the mounds of radioactive scrap metal in the garbage all day without a problem, there's a few artifacts up there too!

Also you are using the artifacts, right? If you find yourself running out of health a lot, hide somewhere safe and wear as many +Health artifacts (stone blood, meat chunk, and soul) as you can, you'll regenerate CoD style but don't go into a fight with them equipped since they make you take a ton of damage. Bulletproofing is nice but you really should try to avoid getting shot at all. In vanilla SoC you can't really fix your armor unless you stack 5 spring artifacts so that the springboard and other gravity anomalies actually heal you and repair your suit.

Soul is one of the best artifacts in the game, up there with Moonlights. Never ever dump them :stare:

Also the Souls, Meat Chunks and Stone Bloods don't give you more hit points, they speed up your natural regeneration rate. Without them equipped you regain health pretty slowly, if you stack up a bunch of Souls or Meat Chunks you'll see your health go from practically nothing to full in no time at all. It makes you take a lot more damage by debuffing your damage resistances though. I used the artifacts for healing a lot, to the point where I had so many medkits I was just leaving them wherever I found them by the time I got to the Red Forest.

VSS is one of the best guns in SoC hands down, plus you get to practice with bullet drop physics since the bullet is so slow. Aiming 10 feet above someone's head and having it drop perfectly into a headshot is so satisfying :swoon:

Plus you can actually see the bullet in flight, it's seriously awesome. The Tunder/Groza is great too, I forget if you can mount a PSO scope on them (I remember doing it and it looks hilariously awkward) but it kicks rear end against any human enemies. It's not so good against swarms of mutants though.

Didn't pick through all the bodies from the first assault before freeing Mole - a lesson learned for the next run - so I ran out of bandages and the little remaining ammo for Strelok's Akm on the way back into the Institute. There was plenty on the bodies all around, but reaching them meant getting massacred. Finally took out the last 3 that knew my location by camping with the sawn-off double-barreled in one of the barracks, allowing me to gather some ammo again to clean out the rest of them. That was intense.

Question: There're many locked doors on cupboards and tables in the Institute. The ZSG says I should be able to shoot many such doors open, but I haven't been to open even one of them even with an Akm burst. Are these supposed to be shootable or is there a trick to it? I absolutely certain that they're packed full of 5.45x39mm, if only I could open them.

If you see those little white/gray metal boxes on a shelf or whatever, stab them with a knife. They drop stuff more often than not, medkits, ammo, you name it.

Okay, I can accept if someone hands you some completely broken rusted heap that you won't buy it, but a 50% condition gun is perfectly serviceable. So I've been hanging around the Cordon, Garbage, and Bar because it's practically the only places where anything of note happens, ever. Some Dutyers must have had a lovely anomaly detector because I found a three man squad that had walked into a trio of Springboards by the broken rail bridge in Cordon and got themselves nice and squished. The bodies were right in the middle of the anomalies and I couldn't reach them without getting squished myself. Some AI Loner from the nearby farm encampment wasn't as hesitant as I was and tried to loot them.

He briefly cried out for a medkit. I just stood back and watched. He added his gear to the loot pile shortly after. Such is life in the Zone.

Normally after all that drama I'd say "screw it" and move on but something was telling me these guys had a lot of stuff on em, I'd been hearing no end of gunfights for the last several days and I've been coming across a ton of dead bandits and Clear Sky folks. As I couldn't get close enough to the bodies to even check them, I remembered 2 things:

Springboards don't hold bodies in place.

Bullets go right through anomalies.

So, out comes the Protecta loaded with slug shells. 4 shells later, the bodies are clear of the anomaly field and I can loot with impunity. Guns. Lots of guns. Enfields, a SPAS-12, no end of AK variants and enough drugs to take half the Zone through bat country. Oh, and the Loner who was trying to loot? All he had on him was a crappy sawn-off and a half drunk bottle of vodka. He was so close to making it big, too.
