I've talked a bit about it before, but the skillup system is really in need of a reworking for the three people every month who want to start the game fresh, and the people coming back after a long, pre-adoulin hiatus. They seemed to have fixed or alleviated most of the old-school grinding elements in this game, and yet they keep this one around. Sure, you can buy food to help it along, but it doesn't help new or poor mage players when Pitaru tends to be criminally expensive (although I just checked xiah and I guess prices have gone down some since?)

Really, if I had my way, A+ would cap at 100 and all other caps would trickle down from there. One skill per level up to the cap, with two at 99 for an A+ skill. Adjust all other gear with skill increases to fall in line with this. Either that or just allow skills to increase by whole numbers if you're incredibly undercapped.

The convenience options like teleporting between home points and Trust magic are really something, though. I'll probably be stopping into goon shell this weekend before the big XIV patch next week, but if I like what I see I might keep my sub going after the holidays. At least so I can scare up some of the new AF for my red mage.

You can buy books with sparks that give skillups ranging from .1 to .5, so to max a skill from 0 to a+ you'd need...

(426/.3 (average gain))= 1420 books at what, 300 per book? 426k sparks.

I'll see if I can take advantage of that, then. All I really remember is that my RDM and BRD haven't seen their spell caps since Abyssea hit, and it always kind of bugged me. Didn't bother me enough to make me run a spellcast script overnight to cap them, but still a bit of a bummer.

I also want to take a whack at that monstrosity stuff, because from what I've read it seems fun as hell.

I meant more with regards to scripting song/healing/enhancing. At least, last I remember Healing would still skill up even when healing someone at full HP, just that it had less of a chance to.

Skilling Enfeebling and Elemental is a hell I'd like to not experience again. If I can avoid it with sparks, I'll gladly do it.

A couple of old friends of mine want to get back together and bang out the stories we have left over. Problem is I'm on a different server than they are. Will I be able to transfer during the welcome home campaign, or will I need to subscribe again first?

I resubbed last Friday because I guess I wasn't allowed to server transfer characters that were technically inactive, so I'm on Asura now, although it's more because a lot of friends I met in XIV are on Asura.

Is there a i119 replacement for the elemental staves/combo staff? I saw that there was a cure potency staff from some Unity thing, but I'd like to replace my Chantoyant Staff with another all in one if possible.

There really is no ilvl119 replace for the Chatoyant staff's effects, but there are plenty of ilvl119 options that are better than it. You can easily do alluvion skirmish cirdas(club useable by whm/rdm/blu/geo) and rala(staff usebale by blm/smn/sch) for ilvl119 weapons.

https://www.bg-wiki.com/bg/Tamaxchi <---for cure potency and it is easy to get because wkr is very doable. It is ilvl115 though.

I've got RDM, WHM, BRD, THF, and DNC leveled. I was told I'd need an Empyrian instrument to do anything modern on Bard, so that's out, and my current goal is to finish SoA and RoV on RDM (for sentimental reasons) and then keep WHM and THF/DNC up to date for more recent content/soloing junk with trusts.

I'll look into the stuff you linked when I get home, though. Thanks.

I, too, feel like a big poop noobie after coming back from a few years break. Every time I think about the kinds of things I'd need to do to get my jobs geared up I get overwhelmed.

I did end up finishing WotG and the Cait Sith/Atomos summoning quests, though. I liked the story, but man I can't imagine doing all this walking around before teleporting to home points/survival guides was a thing.

Pretty convenient how XIV's pre-expansion period starts to lull right around the time XI celebrates an anniversary. I'm back in, looking to primarily complete SoA and RoV - last time i played I think I got most of the those pioneer skills from SoA, and I got as far as entering Reisenjima, so I think I'm in a good place.

Any particular trusts worth looking out for in this month's login campaign? I picked up Shantotto II before, and I've got a few others of what's on offer.

Also, here's the gear progression path for people coming back/new people.

-1->98, who gives a poo poo beyond keeping a fairly current weapon (work your way through RoV far enough for 1 more extra trust ASAP; starting RoE quests give you a good roster of trusts to get trucking with + Apururu unity trust). Let your trusts do a lot of the heavy lifting*

*Make sure to recast your trusts every once in awhile. I do not believe they level up when you do. Make sure to grab the appropriate 117 sparks armor, accessories and weapon for your job with sparks along the way. Split rest of sparks into sellable gear for money and skillup books so you're not a terrible shitbad for Maat**.

**Chances are you're going to be a really bad shitbird if this is your first job. For this reason, I actually suggest people take up WHM as their first job. You can beat the Maat fight by just kiting him and popping potions and WHM is a very good job to get an early start into endgame content.

"Look at me, I just hit level 99"
Throw on your 117 gear and marvel at your new power, although you're still really awful. Take this moment to catch up on your lagging skills and work on more RoV missions.

Gear progression at 99:
Sparks gear->NQ Ambuscade gear->HQ Ambuscade gear/Delve/Escha Zi'Tah-Ru'Ann gear->Reisenjima/Omen/reforged AF/SinisterReign/Vagary

Notes:
-Alluvion skirmish used to be the go to stop for your endgame set up, but outside of a few circumstances, I'd suggest completely skipping this stage. A lot of the gear is outclassed for a lot of jobs anymore and why sink gil into irrelevant gear? If you're a BST or SCH, maybe reconsider down the road.
-Ambuscade is the content you'll want to likely jump right into. The NQ sets are good starter sets for a lot of people, the capes are top of the line for every job and you can make good money. This is also an event that encourages you to party up, so load up with some other lovely new 99 people and spam away.
-Once you get a strong 119 armor set and a decent 119 weapon, power through your missions and make your way into the RoV zones. These zones will provide you the gear you need to get deep into endgame.
-Don't feel too bad if you decide to skip Sinister Reign. The battle system is stupid as poo poo, hardly anyone does it any longer and random augments tied on pure luck is the worst thing. I'd suggest doing it when you can till you at least get August trust (excellent tank trust), and after that you can just skip this event unless you're looking for perfect gearsets (ex: perfect aug'd sam tights).
-Vagary is also completely skipable too, unless your job is very dependent on reforged empyrean ilvl119 gear.
-A lot of the Delve gear is old and not needed anymore, but I'd still suggest going through it for some accessories (necklace, earrings, TH belt).

Thanks for this. Last time I came back I got a leg up on Sparks gear, but I've been languishing at 117 trying to figure out where to go next.

I've spent the last week plugging through the SoA story, before I eventually got tired of the next game day waiting and decided to wrap up RoV. I got as far as the Cloud of Darkness fight, but I can't seem to solo that with my trusts, so that's a bummer.

Aside from that I've been soloing random EP mobs to get some merits and CP. My merit cap's at 41 right now, and I've finished some other categories like RDM Group 1/2. I also picked up a Septoptic from the Wanted dial, which seems like a neat weapon for my WHM.

Not sure what I'll do after I finish the SoA and RoV missions. I'd like to continue playing RDM, but scoping out the shouts in town I don't think I've ever seen people ask for one. Maybe I'll level GEO.

I wrapped up Rhapsodies last night! Kind of an annoying, basic final fight that took a couple of tries - first with a BLU and GEO (me on WHM) and when we wiped near the end the GEO brought in a PUP friend to help finish the job.

Nice ending cutscene, and a beautiful song to cap off eleven years of this game.

Still gotta do the back half of Seekers, but that'll probably be easier.

Are Assaults soloable? As in, can I enter them without a party? One of the goals I'd left by the wayside when I stopped playing regularly was getting Captain rank, and I'd like to knock that out sometime this week or next.

Alternatively - anyone on Asura wanna knock out some assaults over the weekend?

Vitamean

August seems like a cool trust to have. I'm so used to trusts being relatively easy to nab, kind of surprised that it drops from an endgame event.

I've been playing retail on and off with a friend who's max level and a couple friends who just wanted to kill some time in between big game releases. On my own time I realized that I can finally level Blue Mage and nab spells without bothering other people to come help with monsters, so I've been grabbing everything, even the ones people say are useless. It's been a neat experience, both seeing my friends react to the game while also pursuing old content at my own pace.

Just did my first VE ambuscade with my level capped friend last night, and I'm wondering if I should spend the Rem's Tales on BLU AF or save them for another job.

Decided to come back but on a new character, because I was overwhelmed with all the inventory I'd have to sort through on my main. I've been having a blast just vibing out on a character starting from square one.

A quick question, though - how reasonable is it to solo or low man the ranks in ToAU and WotG? WotG in particular, every time I look at the campaign map it just looks like no one even bothers to do the content anymore (at least on Ragnarok). Does the WotG Shadow Lord fight just not become available anymore?

I know that the rewards from both of these contents are pretty useless aside from captain rank in Assault if I wanted to make a mythic for some reason, but I found myself wondering about these two in particular because I did them a lot when they were current.

I guess I had a similar question about Salvage. I know there's a newer level 99 version but is there a reason to do the 75 version alone or with a few buds?

You can do Assaults and Campaign solo though some Campaign bits are annoying without AOE and there's those few Assaults that REALLY loving SUCK and having another person along helps immensely (escorting the prisoner, orcicalcum survey, soup).

Haha yeah, I definitely remember my Assault static having to take a few tries at some of the early ones back in the day. I think we cleared Escort the Prisoner once to check it off then did other ones. I sorta remember one where you had to break down walls with explosives and another where you had to run around Ilrusi Atoll looking for some interactable. Fun times.

Campaign is almost solely for lockstyle piece so yeah it's pretty dead. Dunno if you could solo hard enough to make an impact? Probably possible but very grindy.

Mythics are still powerful enough to where it's not impossible to find someone willing to run assaults to help out. Salvage is useful for a handful of edge cases so they still are rarely ran, though 1) it's mostly trivial to solo at 99, and 2) it's super hard to get in to cus it's bottled to hell and back for farming alexandrite.

I've got a couple of buds playing so I figure once we're all capped out on our first jobs and scoop the rhapsody that lowers the tag cooldown we can blast through them, and if I can get them into salvage we'll give that a shot too.

Thanks for the replies!

tbh I didn't really feel any different on Ragnarok right up to the point where I needed a gold chain for the blue mage AF and had to watch xiah for an entire day for one to get listed.

It's not all bad, at least. There's one annoying guy in yell chat who I blacklisted immediately, but I've mostly been subsisting on vibes while bouncing from zone to zone to pick up blue magic. I went around exploring Bostaunieux Oubliette last night, which is something I'd never done even when i was actively subbed, and even if it is just a dinky sewer it was cool going to parts of the map I'd never set foot in before.

I'd initially jumped in there because it was the least painful place to find slimes to learn Digest, but after I picked it up I kept going. I don't think I ever even did the map quest on my old character, so I didn't realize there was an exit out to Ronfaure.

Was able to scoop a bunch of ToAU spells last night. Still got a few of them I'm gonna try to get from Caedarva. It's been fun sorta planning my route on spells I'm gonna pick up per area - my commitment to not start CoP til after I finish RotZ has meant that I missed out on some spells locked in Riverne and Phomiuna, but those should be coming back now that I can take on stuff in Ifrit's Cauldron and Uleguerand.

Had a bit of a shock yesterday. Stepped into Abyssea to pick up some blue magic spells, thought to myself "this place used to give good exp right", and proceeded to never see the exp go past 500. The running campaign for non-abyssea areas is just that good, huh.

Is there a plugin that tracks buffs and debuffs on party members as well as targets? I've got one that shows a list of some debuffs applied to the enemy - Debuffed shows what's on the current target, but I was hoping for something that tracks party members as well.
