I’m confused by where it says you get it for free. I see a link to the Discount Campaign where the Ultimate Collection will be $10, what am I missing?
If you have an inactive account, they will activate it and you will play for free from the 16th to the 27th.

Did you have a really old FFXI account or something?

Okay so basically this.

If you've already bought the game from the S-E store, you need to check your email for a receipt from them. Inside that e-mail there will be a link that will reveal the key codes for your purchase. Open that up.

Log into your SEID account and add new services -> put in the game key. When you've done that successfully it'll give you a PoL ID and a generic PoL password. From there you can go to your Service Accounts and Options List and change the PlayOnline password if you wish. You also need to go there to create a new content ID so you can make a character to begin playing.

You will also get 2 more keys for a stupid shirt and hat. They're very good for leveling pre level 30, so I suggest doing so. To use those codes, first you need to go into the game itself and create a character. Once you've done that, go back into the Service Accounts menu and click Add a service account. Enter stupid codes, and confirm the character to receive the shirt+hat. Once that's done, you need to log out and back into your dumb anime character and go to a specific moogle and claim your fancy new poo poo.

I'm about to lose my loving mind. So I bought the game again and added everything to my SquareEnix account, got the random code username for playonline, changed my password to something manageable, and it still says incorrect login/password. :(

Edit: I get a "SquareEnix account certification error"
Make sure the pass-word you're saving to the viewer is your PoL password and the password you enter every time you try to log in is your Square-Enix password. If you have a one-time password thing set up, you have to make sure that option is turned on in the viewer and you enter the 6 digit code. If you don't have that, make sure one-time password is shut off.

If you enter your password incorrectly so many times, there's a cooldown period involved. Make sure you have proper ports open and if all that fails, yeah call S-E.

DRG isn't WAR or DRK, but it's not a joke status job anymore.

THF isn't is dire as once needed, but still has a place for TH. THF is also a strong DD job, but requires a lot of gil and time building gear sets to really start getting the DPS results.

I'm not as high on BLU vs about 18 months ago. It's a solid job and can do pretty well, but it takes time to learn all the spells and requires effort getting all the gear to be good. A well-rounded choice to solo all the missions and what not, still. Biggest problem with BLU is all the pubbies whined and whined about how strong the job was, so S-E leaves them off all new gear.

BST is a god awful job with the command range nerf. Don't loving bother. PUP is a much better pet class job.

SMN requires a lot of work to be invited for anything.

NIN is great if you want to do content involving abyssea and that's it and RNG is cool and good, but requires a lot of work. COR is a lot more popular than RNG though.

Overall I think if you avoid Monk and Paladin you'll be alright. Even BLM has some use in the newer dyna content. PLD and MNK are totally useless though, so don't waste the time on those jobs (which happens to be my 2 favorite jobs. gently caress).

Since when has pld been useless? If soemthing is actually going to hit hard and not die in 5 seconds they are still useful.
Rune has enough -DT to handle things. PLD is just really bad and brings nothing to the table.

While this thread is moderately active: how is Ninja nowadays? I've been enjoying leveling it, but I hear it's in a pretty useless niche nowadays in endgame. If I level it up to 99, will I be able to use it at all at meaningful endgame stuff?
Well if your goal is to do big time endgame things, NIN is not the job you want to mess with. It does have a pretty interesting role as a solo job though.

A lot of safety with 3 levels of Utsusemi, decent weaponskills and the ability to Magicburst your own chains for decent damage. Takes a large investment though!

Ninja was one of the jobs I liked the most in FFXI.

After they were nerfed it wasn't so bad, but originally they took an alliance to get through and were pretty brutal. It was a major roadblock for the first month or so and really turned a lot of players off.

Def a shame, COP is by far the best expansion. It's story rivals mainline FF games.
The biggest issue with FFXI is that CoP came out around the same time as WoW did and nobody wanted to stick around for level cap bullshit when they could go play a less demanding game instead.

The population would have stayed higher for much longer if they did everything different with CoP. Outside of the rings and Limbus, it was pretty awful to be honest.

I'm considering playing this, the appeal of using Trusts to do progression and have a chill time sounds like a very good way to revisit a game I barely scratched the surface of. One question first though: is it absolutely worth retrieving an old PlayOnline account if you had one? I ask because my original XI account was created back around launch but I never got beyond 20s on any job. Is there any kind of, returner bonus for an oldschool account coming back? If there isn't really any big QoL reward out of it, I'd probably just create a trial account instead. I definitely don't expect to play the character on that account / couldn't even tell you its name so retrieval might be next to impossible anyway.
S-E is more terrible then the game itself.

It'll be on sale for $9 this month. Just start new.

Wings of the Goddess is fine, I guess. The issue is more it's the kind of thing you only want to do once, so if you make a new character/account and have to do it again... it wears out its welcome fast. I think it's fine on your first time through.

BUT! Do not, under any circumstances, do the Bastok storyline in Wings unless you have help. There's an escort mission involved that is extremely hard to solo, even at item level. San'doria is the easiest but it kind of sucks plot-wise. Windurst is in-between in difficulty and is pretty interesting to boot.
I'm just now seeing this.

Escort mission is easy if you have a BLU with a good AoE set.
