This is yet another case of the Reznor/Ross score being better than the movie it's for (at least, I think).

New HEALTH album is indeed a new HEALTH album, which is to say I really like it! I think I like it less than Slaves of Fear on first listen, but it's still real good. I think FUTURE OF HELL, CHILDREN OF SORROW, SICKO, ASHAMED and DSM-V are my favorite tunes from it. Wish I could see them on tour for this one.

Yeah, Johnny is a great character and I think he adds a lot as the public face of the band. I texted him on the number they put out there way back when just to say I appreciate their music.

HEALTH was my favorite band for probably close to a decade and for a while I really had no idea who did what (other than the drumming and singing I guess), but in the years after death magic before they announced that Jupiter had left the band I was already wondering what had happened to them; the new songs they were putting out sounded so flat compared to their S/T, Get Color, or Death Magic. Like, Feel Nothing seems like it was their last attempt at a catchy single but it sounds so one-dimensional after bangers like Die Slow or Stonefist or USA Boys.

Even without Jupiter I think they're still capable of putting together the occasional jam like Isn't Everyone or Hateful, but I miss the way Jupiter's production made their music pop and his synth work that contrasted with the darker elements - it doesn't seem like the band as currently constituted is capable of making something like their High Pressure Days cover. Three amazing albums is more than you could ask of most bands though imo and it's cool that they've carved out this niche, so more power to the remaining three I guess.
I listened to the S/T and Get Color today and I think there's a couple songs I really like between both of those. I'm so glad their music evolved into what it has, because if it all sounded like those two records, I wouldn't be nearly as interested in them.

That's so dope! Though looking at that setlist, are they not playing TEARS anymore or did they just not play it that night? If they've retired it, I'm so glad I got to see them play it a couple times live.

The secondary highlight of that interview (after those pictures.. those pictures are definitely first) is that it sounds like Trent and Atticus are energised as gently caress at the minute - including to do more with NIN.

I thought that was nice to read instead of some variant of “I’m tired of touring” or “nobody loving listens to music properly anymore”.
Here's the article:
https://www.gq.com/story/trent-reznor-and-atticus-ross-creativity-awards-profile

I'm reading it now and

quote:

But he and Ross still come to work, daily, in search of transcendence. “We sit in here every day,” Reznor said. “And a portion of the time organically becomes us just figuring out who we are as people and processing life and a kind of therapy session. And in those endless hours it’s come up: Why do we want to do this? And the reason is because we both feel the most in touch with God and fulfilled.”

Did Trent find god as he got older or something? What happened to "God is dead and no one cares"? I know that was 30 years ago, but I didn't know he'd done a 180 and become a believer in that time.

e: lol

quote:

(Once, I asked the two men whether their upcoming clothing line would feature any color. “No,” Reznor said, incredulously. “Of course not.”)

quote:

Some of that energy, he and Ross said, would probably become the next Nine Inch Nails album. Doing soundtrack work, Reznor said, had “managed to make Nine Inch Nails feel way more exciting than it had been in the past few years. I’d kind of let it atrophy a bit in my mind for a variety of reasons.”

But now, “I do feel excited about starting on the next record,” Ross said. “I think we’re in a place now where we kind of have an idea.”
